Tuff but fair
Coarse was in great shape, greens were about a 12 and smooth
Spring Tune Up
A beautiful afternoon for a practice round. The course was in good shape for the time of year. Unfortunately I got stuck behind a group of 3 using 1 cart and none of them seemed to know what they were doing, nor had they been taught any etiquette. For 12 holes I trailed them which made it difficult to get into any kind of rhythm. On the plus side it gave me lots of time to try a variety of shots from lots of lies which is kind of what you want for a practice round. The greens were tough and the pin placements on 9 and 17 bordered on malevolent. All in all it was a decent start to the season at a beautiful mountain course.
Lovely day for golf
The course was in great shape. Staff friendly. It’s a little pricey, but with promo code it was comparable to other courses nearby.
Not worth the price
I have been a fan of this course for a long time and have played it when it was in really good shape and was a good value. It currently is neither. They are charging way too much for the condition of the course currently. They were charging $68 and it’s not worth more than $40 right now. The greens were ok. A little slow and grainy. But no big problems. However, the tee boxes had several large bare spots. There was very little grass, the ground was extremely hard, and ALOT of weeds. It wasn’t the worst I’ve ever played. But I’d expect much better conditions for that price in this area. The layout is still great. And very challenging. The employees were nice. But I’d have been upset if I’d paid full price. Luckily, I’d win a free greens fee there last summer and only had to pay 20 dollar cart fee. The pace of play was great. About 3 hours for a two some on a Saturday. But that’s bc the course is way overpriced. Much better value relatively close by at Meadowbrook, River Bend, and Deer Brook. I won’t go back unless conditions improve dramatically or the price is lowered 20 bucks or more.
First time here - nice place
Course in good condition- ONLY NEGATIVE is they allow 5 somes. Would not allow anyone to play through. Everything bout the course is very nice. Only a couple of blind shots. Definitely go back. Hopefully not get behind a 5 some that enjoys looking for golf balls on every hole. Pro shop staff are very friendly and answer all questions !
Great shape
Got out to Cleghorn for the first time this year yesterday. I was really impressed with the shape of the course. It is the best I have seen it in a while. Fairways looked great, almost every tee box was in good shape-I think I remember 2 that had some bare spots in them. The greens looked great and rolled smooth, however, they are pretty slow and the look was deceiving bc they look like they will be fast. So our group had a lot of trouble getting the ball to the hole. Overall, great course in really good shape, and the price isnt too bad on the weekday rates.
Number 1 is the easiest hole. Pretty open short par 4, slightly uphill and straight away.
2 is a dogleg right par 4 of medium length. The green is surrounded by bunkers and pretty elevated. Be careful driver can get through the fairway, and anything that lands on the right side kicks into the woods.
3 is a medium length par 3 that plays straight downhill to a big green.
4 is a long sharp dogleg left par 5. Tee shot is downhill, and then the hole plays well back uphill to the hole.
5 is a sharp dogleg right par 4. You have to decide how much of the dogleg you want to take on.
6 is a beautiful hole, medium length par 4 but with a huge elevation drop off the tee. The fairway also slopes hard right to left, so aim into the right rough, bc in the middle of the fairway kicks to the cart path. Second shot plays back uphill to the hole.
7 is a long par 4. and the green is very shallow. Tough par 3.
8 is a medium length par 4 with a steeply elevated green.
9 is a shot par 4, with some movement to the left.
10 is a dogleg left par 4 about 370 yards. There is a creek across the fairway. Long hitters could reach or carry it.
11 is a dogleg left surrounded by water. Accuracy is a must .
12 is a shorter par 3.
13 is a long uphill par 4 to a very shallow green.
14 is a shorter par 5 that plays like a roller coaster. Uphill, downhill, then back up to a very shallow green....do not go long.
15 is a cool hole, a creek creates a split fairway on a shorter par 4. The left side is a much safer tee shot with plenty of room, but the angle to the green for the 2nd shot is not good. The right fairway is a MUCH riskier play. But if you make the shot, the short approach is MUCH easier.
16 is usually about 180 yard par 3, but yesterday the had the tee at about 145.
17 is a par 4 over a pond then back uphill to green.
18 is a great finishing par 5. Long hole but pretty open. Got to lay up as close to the bottom of the fairway as you can. Then a long approach over a pretty big pond to another shallow green.
Fun course to play, alot of elevation chance and no two holes look or play alike!
Funa and Challenging Mountain Course
Played on a Saturday that was a bit cold and windy which added to the challenge of the course. Lots of elevation changes and most of the greens are elevated (after all, it is a mountain course). Given all the rain lately it was in good shape.
From the forward tees, which is 4620, many of the holes are longer than the stated yardage because of the uphill approach shots and the wind is often in you face but that is what makes it challenging.
It is a beautiful course and I would recommend it. The weekend price of $52 is very reasonable and if you are a senior (60+) and can play during the week, the rate is only $36 w/cart. I assume they also have some GolfNow Hot Deals that would make it a steel.
The staff was very friendly and the food we had was good.
Fantastic Track!
$22 to play this course is a steal! The greens have recently been redone and were in perfect shape, and hard and fast. The rest of the course was just a special treat to play. We got stuck behind a fivesome playing a scramble, but you can't fix stupid, and that is not the courses fault. If you ever anywhere near this course, do stop in and give it a play. I will back the next time I am in the area.
Good Round
Cleghorn is in good shape for early this summer. The fairways and rough are growing in nicely. A few dirt areas in fariways which stay in the shade and dont get enough sun. But they dont affect play alot, and overall are in good shape. Greens rolled really smooth and were also in good shape. I did think they were pretty slow. They looked fast, but they just were not. The tees were in the worst shape, and they werent terrible. Just chewed up and bare on several of the white tees.
The course is one of the more challenging around. Alot of elevation changes and doglegs. Just not an easy course.
1 is the easiest hole out there. Slightly uphill, but straight par four 315 or so from the mens tees.
2 is a medium length par 4 dogleg right to an elevated green surrounded by bunkers in the front. Anything right bounces in the woods.
3 is a 170 yard downhill par 3.
4 is a long dog leg left par 5. The tee shot plays downhill, the rest of the hole plays pretty steeply up the hill.
5 is a dogleg right par 4, about 360 from the white tees.
6 is a beautiful hole. Tee off way up at the top of a hill, over a pond to the fairway which goes back up to the green. Its important to know the fairway slopes to the left pretty severely as well
7 is a long par 3 with a very shallow green. Tough par 3.
8 is a medium length par 4. Its straight away, but the green is well up on a hill.
9 is a short par 4 that doglegs to the left.
10 is a medium length par 4, with a creek on the right that cuts across the fairway about 100 yards out. You need to be on the right side of the fairway to have an angle to the hole.
11 is a medium length par 4 that doglegs left. Water left and right.
12 is a shorter par 3
13 is a long uphill par 4. The green is also very shallow.
14 is a roller coaster of a par 5. Up, down and back uphill again. Green again is very shallow. DO NOT GO LONG
15 is a really cool hole. Split fairway with a creek through the middle of the hole. The closer you are to the creek or more risky fairway sliver the better your angle to the green.
16 is a 180 yard par 3
17 is a uphill par 4
18 is a monster of a par 5. Second shot needs to be layed up about 125 from the green to be in the flat spot. Then played over a large pond, uphill to a shallow green.
Def worth a play, and if you are willing to pay online you can save about 5% on your cost.
Very Nice
Played Cleghorn for the first time yesterday (05/29/21). What a beautiful and good conditioned golf course. From the pro in the clubhouse until the final putt dropped it was a wonderful experience. The Pro was very friendly as was all the staff, and the course is beautiful and in very good shape. Not a bad hole on the course. I didn't play well but still loved it. It took just over an hour from Greenville to get there but a easy and pretty ride. I will be back and look forward to it. If you have not played it, schedule a round and go enjoy it!
Great Course for a semi-private one
We came from a private country club in Missouri which was amazing!
This club has reached and exceeded the bar set by our previous country club1
We were apprehensive about a semi-private club, but could not be any happier with our choice.
We joined as members after checking our 4 other clubs in the region and it proved to be the best choice!
Good shape for time of year
Played my first round of the spring at Cleghorn yesterday, and was pleased with the shape of the course for this time of year. The greens were in really good shape, there wasnt a bare or thin spot that I could find. They rolled great, maybe a little slower than normal, but the greens were really good. The fairways were just starting to come in but overall were in good shape for spring. The tee boxes were hit and miss, some had grass starting to grow on them. Others, especially ones in the shade, didnt have any grass coming in yet and were chewed up. The bunkers could use a little sand in them. Overall, for April and a course that is bermuda in NC the course is in good shape. The layout is challenging and outstanding with a lot of elevation change throughout the course. It will challenge you all you want. Its worth a play for sure.
Greens rolling
The greens are rolling great.. Staff is very friendly and helpful. A great day of golf on a winter day in the south.
Value
We try to play often and check for deals on courses within an hour trip time. Never been disappointed with this place...
Well maintained course with challenging layout and excellent greens.
Staff is friendly and appreciate you choosing to play there...
Always seem to complete the rounds in a timely manner,
It’s just a great value, if you have not played it you should give it a try
Great Course. Great Value. Can't Wait to Do It Again.
The course layout is great. It has interest and variability without being contrived. The greens were great. The grass on the course is dormant, but the greens are dyed green and roll perfectly. The fairways are a little on the "fluffy" side, but it makes the ball sit up nicely for your shot.
Nice to have a good practice area with lots of grass turf and not mats. Nice practice green as well.
Can't wait to play this course again!!
Unbelievable for the price.
Fairways, greens and rough were as good as anything I've played this year all for $25 on golfnow which was mind-blowing. The only things that could use a little attention was the bunkers and fringes. Bunkers were ok but had a few that had a few too many rocks in them and I definitely recommend chipping off the fringe, they were too furry and unpredictable to put through but overall unbelievable value for the quality of the course.
