Past its prime
This may be a "Donald Ross Classic" but it's long past its prime. The course it self is ok at best. Nothing special or beautiful about it unless you're one of the old locals trying to salvage this place. The greens were in pretty good shape but very slow. Here's the worst part. There was no drinking water on the course due to Covid. No beverage cart., and the turn shack closed at 1:00 as we were on the green about to go there. 95 degrees out and no access to anything to drink. When we complained at the end of the round we were given attitude and finger pointing. No apologizes. Rude! Also, the amenities, club house, etc are so old and out dated. They've never been upgrades since they were built. If this course were anywhere else it would be a $25-$30 course..
The bones are still good
SPGC is a wonderful layout on beautiful land. I grew up playing this course as a kid and was excited to play it again. There is a lot of elevation change on the course. You hit to a lot of raised greens that make shots and club selection more challenging. There is some water on the course that could be beautiful if it is cleaned up. The course just needs some TLC. The bones are still good, very good. I was thrilled to hear that Pine Needles/Mid Pines is buying the course and will put some money and care into it. The cart paths need repairing, a number of drainage/erosion issues need attention, and many areas just off the fairways need manicuring/mowing/cleaning up. I can't wait to see what it looks like in a year or two after the soon-to-be new owner gives it some attention. If you've been playing the Pinehurst courses and want another Donald Ross challenge, come play SPGC. This course is not in nearly the same shape as the top courses in the area, but for the price, the beauty, the challenge, and the fun, I'd play it again for sure.
Very Average
This course was in good shape and the greens were great. I wouldn’t play at Southern Pines again until they lower their price or until they renovate the course. My round was not worth $55 considering i can play several other course for the same price with a higher caliber. the course was in good shape ( minus some dirt spots in their fairways) and the greens were very good. the biggest thing holding them back is charging over $50 for a average course
Southern Pines
I have played this course several times, the conditions are very poor right now. I am excited to hear that the new purchase by the Pine Needles and Mid Pines group has been finalized. I really look forward to the rebuilding of this Donald Ross Treasure. It might take a couple of years but the future is bright! What a trio it will be.
1906 Classic
Donald Ross on a budget. Greens were slow, but tee-to-green, above average conditioning. A little disconcerting in that there were exposed electrical wires, down the left side of 17.
Nice Layout
Real nice course Donald Ross track with a lot of potential. Overall course condition was fair to good. Greens were slow. A bit rough around the edges. I'm told someone is about to sink some money into the course, which it deserves. Enjoyed the round despite the heat. It the greens were rolling at 10 or above on the stimp meter the course would play difficult. At 6-7 they are manageable when above the pins, and very slow when below. Took me about five holes to adjust my putting stroke. Lots of potential here.
Very good condition
have played this course many times over the last ten years-a 1906 Donald Ross design. Not an easy course. Conditions right now are as good as they have been in this time. Fairways are coming back from not very good and are now very good. Greens were aerated-pro shop compensated us for that. Love this course.
Great Value for Pinehurst
Southern Pines isn't up there with the top tier of Pinehurst resort courses, Tobacco Road, or Pine Needles, but it's a solid Donald Ross track that's very affordable. We got a late afternoon tee time for only $40 on a summer Friday, and it was well worth the money.
The course is classic Ross - fairly straightforward holes with undulating tricky greens. Conditions were pretty good, but with some patchy areas in the fairway. The greens rolled pretty true, but a bit on the slow side.
Our group all agreed this is definitely worth a visit if you're on a budget in the Sandhills. Donald Ross left his mark on the region and Southern Pines was one of his first designs. It's not championship golf by any stretch, but it's got solid character.
OVERALL: 7.3/10
Solid Donald Ross course
A favorite course when I’m in Pinehurst. First time back in a couple of years. Conditions (fairways and rough) are improved from then. Greens were in very good shape. Pace of play was no issue. Will definitely return here.
Fond Memories
I first played this course in May of 1972 while on vacation. That trip I played Southern Pines twice and had, and still have many fond memories of those two rounds. The memories were not of my scores but of the way I was recieved in the pro shop, by those who I played with and the course itself. I enjoyed it so much that I invited my manager to go with me in 2000 and he too enjoyed all that Southern Pines had to offer. On my first visit I went to the pro shop the evening before to see if I as a single could get a game the next day. I was told to be there before 8 am and I could join the group that would be going out then. When I arrived I found out that the group consisted of approximately 20 golfers and we were split up by the organizer, an 80 year old gentleman who I wound up play with. we all threw $2.00 in the pot and went out to a very enjoyable round. When we came in we were directed to the members locker room where tables were set up with a picture of a libation and the remainder of the $2.00 was split up amoungst the top three groups. I returned two days later and was paired with a father and his son who were members and knew the course like a road map and both were good golfers who treated a young foreigner like royalty even though his game was even close to theirs. I had hoped to return again however with the Covid-19 virus I'm not sure if that will happen any time soon. I am delighted that you are going back to the original layout as I found it most enjoyable and I do hope I will have the opportunity to come to the Aberdeen area and play Southern Pines again.
Awesome spot
We had a buddies trip down to pinehurst and were debating on playing #9 after playing #4 in the am. We decided on southern pines for the price and recommendation by a caddy. It was AWESOME! Course was kept in incredible shape and layout was 10/10. Fun golf course to play and doesn’t break the bank. Clubhouse is not nearly as nice as the course itself. When pulling up it looks like it may be a dog track due to club house but the course will blow you away! Will be back.
Amazing place
This place is absolutely amazing! Every hole is a challenge in itself. We played 36 holes and I couldn’t get enough of this golf course! Greens rolled true and fast. There are no easy shots here and the par threes are very demanding from the tips. Play and enjoy this Donald Ross masterpiece as I’ll be back soon!
Any tips for playing there ?
