Wont be back
Course was average. No real complaints there. But the customer service was terrible. Very unfriendly and un accommodating people at the front desk. I arrived with a group of 8 of us. We showed up a hour early as we always like to do. There were no groups teeing off so we asked to get out early and the front desk refused. We asked why not and was told because they said so. So we sat there and watched an empty tee box with no one teeing off for almost an hour. It was the most ridiculous thing I've seen at a golf course. We spent our entire round upset about the matter. The only reason we didnt leave is because we drove an hour and a half to ge there. Never again. NEVER.
If you love 6 hours rounds, this is the course for you
I play Big Met a few times each year thinking "it can't be as bad as I remember." I always am disappointed. I keep forgetting that the pace of play is the worst in Ohio mainly driven by the poor maintenance.
The rough is thick and extremely high as they never cut it. Your group will spend you entire round hunting golf balls because of it. Talking with some of the staff, their is plenty of conversation about cutting it, but they want to trick it up to play tough. That ends up driving the 6 hour rounds when every group is hunting balls every hole.
The mowing lines also pinch in the fairways to unreasonable width for a muni course that regularly gets the most play in Ohio. They are either not wanting to spend the money on maintaining the appropriate amount of fairway or they are trying to trick up the course to be harder than it needs to be.
On top of that, the are in dire need of tree maintenance. I get the once and awhile strategic obstacle or a challenge when you drive it offline. This is just way past that with trees being overgrown and impacting shots regularly.
Overall, it is one of the poorest maintenance examples in Ohio. It impacts your round turning it into an insufferable slog that just frustrates you. Don't waste your money here. Plenty of other good courses that don't suffer the same issues in Cleveland.
So slow
This course is one of those relatively easy courses that you won’t play well at. “Fore” echos through the metroparks constantly. Big Met is the most played course in Ohio, and they pull this off by jam packing the course, every time I’ve made the turn here on a weekend there’s 3 groups on 10 tee... 9 holers they send off the back regardless of whether or not there are groups trying to turn on 7, 8 and 9. Even if it wasn’t jam packed, the course layout just forces waiting. Oh and is there a worse way to start a round then watching guys on 2 pick up your ball in the middle of 1 fairway?... that happens, often. Avoid Big Met on weekends, afternoons, Holidays, and anytime Tiger Woods is playing well.
Good
Well maintained, great people always considerate. You walk in and they’ll still fit you in.
First Play @ Big Met
This was my first time playing Big Met, and just an outstanding experience. From the clubhouse to the old-style Starter's Shack, the staff is plenty & very pleasant. I thought the course would have more elevation changes than it does, but fun layout & greens in great shape (of course just prior to plugging & topdress). Par5s are short, even for this old guy, but a couple of 440yrd par4s are really difficult ---#9 from back is a bear. I was in middle of Fwy 200yrds out on #14, but didn't have much shot to the green because of trees on right-side guarding the dog-leg. My only complaint was my 2some got wedged behind a couple groups of older gentlemen and a slow pace-of-play. I excused them because of the increasing leaf cover, the glaring sun & thick rough made for ball searching ........of course I was in Fairway.
Great golf course !
Fast pace , 3 hrs Sunday afternoon. Awesome greens !
Great course but slow play
The course was tough in some spots but relatively forgiving. As it's a public metroparks course, play was about as slow as you'd expect. Good value for the money
It's a public course on a beautiful weekend so it was crowded.
