A 4 Star course in a 3 Star course’s body

The layout is generally pretty nice, and outside of Maumee Bay it’s probably the best Ohio State Park golf course, but.....

It might be the least enjoyable 1-18? Why, you ask? The back nine. Specially the non par 3 greens. They are WAY too sloped, with #10 being the worst offender. Any time you’re six feet away for birdie and feel like you have a 10% chance at best of even making par you know the contours of the green have issues.

Above the hole is death. Even below the hole you don’t know how hard to hit it, because God forbid you end up above the hole again. They should seriously do a complete revamping of half the back nine greens to make them playable. Condition wise they’re fine but they’re so punitive even the pros would probably complain about them.

Other than that though the course is pretty nice. Some of the holes aren’t really approachable in regulation unless you’re a bomber. You’ll enjoy this course to a point but it’ll probably also be one of your more frustrating rounds of golf.

One of my favorites, but....

Salt Fork is one of my favorite courses to visit. It's usually a long round, but I don't mind since it's over an hour trip to get there, and the course layout and location make it worth the time. The course was in surprisingly good condition for how dry its been. It was crusty around the edges, but most courses are right now. The fairways were green but hard. The greens were soft. I have two main problems with the course. The price is getting a little bit too high, not just to play, but the prices at the snack bar. The other issue is the setup of the course...specifically pin placements. I enjoy a challenge, but several pins were put in spots that made it more than challenging. More like impossible unless there's luck involved. It's one thing having a pin or two in nutty spots, but there were several that were beyond fair to rank amateurs. Miss a putt by half an inch, at a very slow speed, and you're watching your ball roll off the green. Don't get the next putt quite to the hole? Same result. Even worse is setting it up like that when the course is at its busiest. Will I go back? Of course. It's a nice course in a nice place. But will the setup likely cause some people not to go back? I can see that too.

Turtlebacks

Course in good overall shape and a value
Don’t even think about walking it though
Lot of hills
Many greens were turtlebacked with flags in tight to the front if above the whole you can’t stop the ball from getting to the hole then rolling off the front.
If in front and you don’t get up to the hole your ball will roll back to you and off the green
No reason to have such tough pin placements at a resort course.

Great Track - Being run by knuckleheads

I have bee going on an outing to this course for 21 years. It is a shame that the State of Ohio has decided they do not want to operate golf courses. The contractors they have hired to operate the course seem to have no idea of what they are doing.
Slow checkin and payment
People on maintenance equipment blasting past you during swings.
The course is still in decent shape. Fast greens
I love this course, but not what is happening to it.

Excellent Greens

We had a foursome play there today. We played in 4 hours and was never rushed or held up. The greens were smooth and had a nice pace to them. Would definitely recommend this course

Just tooooo hard

I shot an 82 from the white tees and it was work for 18 holes. Longgggg par 3’s and every hole a dog leg with mountainous hills. For the lesser player.....go somewhere else and have fun.....this place is tough.

Great, scenic layout, but hilly conditions do make this a riding cart round, unless you’re a fit teenager!

I play here 3-5 times a summer and would more but it is at least a 90 minute drive. Good conditions with a challenging layout. It isn’t long, but it doesn’t need to be any longer. This is a shot makers layout and you’ Work isn’t over once on the undulating greens.

Very enjoyable

I love this course. It is very hilly and plays longer than the rated distance as a result. It wasn't crowded at all, it's like having the whole course to yourself.

Hilly course with lots of doglegs

Salt Fork is a challenging course without being particularly long. The numerous hills create a variety of uneven lies, the doglegs demand distance control, and the greens have a good bit of slope.

Challenging course

This course is not long, but it still plays difficult because of the many doglegs, hilly terrain and sloped greens.

Great design by Ohio's Jack Kidwell..

Great gem in Ohio. It's an extremely hilly course. You never have a level stance. Great design by Ohio's Jack Kidwell..if you use gps to drive there be sure to give yourself an extra ten minutes to drive to the course at the end of the park. My gps gave me ETA to the entrance from 22. Under two hours from Columbus. Take your fishing pole and throw in before you head home.

Great deal.

I really enjoy a day at this course. Just about all aspects of your game are tested, and the quick greens....shew. Buckle up if you're above the hole. Well spaced out and tight fairways on most holes. Difficult par 4 and longer par 3 to close out then back up the hill on the final. Nice ending holes. Beer was cold as well!

elevation and greens are great!

try to cut over the trees in the valley hole if you have that shot in your bag. Get a close to the pin on approach shots for low scores, don't over shot the green not good in back of many greens.

mountain golf at its best

The day we played this course it had rained several days prior and the day we had a tee time. Got a good price on golfnow and the rain had actually stopped a few hours before our tee time. The skies were grey and looked threatening so the course had a cart path only policy for that day. We only had a group of 8 or so guys start in front of us but they were nice enough to let me and my wife play through so that we were not on their heels the whole round. Once we got going it was UNBELIEVEABLE!! Not a flat spot on this course. If you like elevation you will love this course!! My wife loved the elevated tees but hated the long walks UP the fairways due to the cart path only stipulation..turned out it was a good amount of steps according to her fitbit. The course was fair and was a bit challenging (hard to find a flat spot on any fairway)especially playing it for the first time. Greens were quick and rolled true and was a treat to play...drove 4 hours from Michigan and I will say it rivals some of the nice courses northern Michigan has to offer(less the dated facilities). Sand traps could use a little love(noticeable stones and small gravel..rough was deep but not overly excessive) and the club house facilities were also a bit long in the tooth. But since it is a State of ohio facility and state budgets these days it is not hard to understand.Hope to play here again in the not to distant future
