Nice Monday break!
This course was less than a mile from the campground we were staying at. It was a great value for the money.
100 yr old fun track
Conditions were mediocre, but this was a fun layout. Greens were good, fairways okay; tees and bunkers were pretty poor. However , we played in under three hours and it was a great time. We would return
Fun at 100 yr old track
Unique 100 yr. old track on state park property. Greens were pretty good - fairways and tees below average, bunkers average. A fun course for the money and my wife and I played 18 in 2.5 hours.
One of the worst
The course is terrible from start to finish. The greens are rough. The fairways if you can tell where they are, are like hitting out of dirt rocks and stumps. There's not a chance this place would ever get my money again.
A Golf Course? Really?
I am local, have played this course several times, but not recently. It's never been a great-conditioned course, but were looking for a quick Sunday round, so gave Caledonia a go. We knew to expect roots, rocks, and bare spots-it's a state park course, and that's always been the norm. MISTAKE! It's worse than I've ever seen it--the worst course I've ever tried to play. There was NO grass in fairways or much of anywhere else. High weeds tufting in the hardpan dirt, everywhere--fairways, approaches. Tee boxes (I used red) were uneven, grassless, and looked like concrete. The tee markers, themselves, could use a coat of paint. Greens were the best feature--they were green and lush (and slow) --but the "concrete" ringed most of them. Gave up after eleven holes. Never again.
Greens were in terrible shape. Tee boxes in bad shape.
Green were terrible
I think playing this course in the spring would of helped some of this rating. The greens had some kind of disease and the one green was so bad, we played if you land on it, you take a 2 putt. Staff was terrific and price was very good! Will be back next spring to see if I am right.
Good golf for the price
Cool course layout. Pretty tight, must be accurate of the box. Very scoreable yet challenging at the same time. Course could have been in much better shape but for $25 I won’t complain. Pace I’d play was good.
Awesome Views
This coarse was very challenging. Lots of elevation changes, dog legs and a few very long holes. I was disappointed in the conditions with fairways needing mowed and greens which were extremely slow from needing mowed. I will be back since all this doesn’t take away from the beauty of this Golf Club.
For a Municipal Course, not bad.
I have played here multiple times, and while the course is consistently under repair, I have never had an outright negative experience. I played in a weekly league last season as well and thoroughly enjoyed being able to play weekly. Due to price and location to me, I will definitely play again.
Old School Cool!
Good Old School course. A lot of fun to hack it around on this course. Some real interesting holes. Love the 4th par 3 with the mound encircling the green!
For Golfers on a Budget
What is interesting about this course is the variety it offers including some blind shots, various elevations, a few dog-legs, one very short par 3 along with some long par 3s. No two holes are the same. It's a bit of a maze but there are very good signs showing where the next hole is. There are also streams running through. It's actually quite beautiful.
The downsides are a few (definitely not the price). 1. The greens are rather bumpy even though they had been well mowed. 2. The fairways flood at various points so its really a dry weather course. 3. I am glad I did not land in any of the bunkers (not that many but not well kept).
In conclusion - I recommend the course because you get your money's worth and maybe more.
Much nicer than anticipated
The pro shop is really nice... that's normally your first assessment of a place and your first encounter with the vibe of a course.
That said, the staff was outstanding and friendly and the shop was fully stocked compared to most local clubs.
The tee boxes are hard as rock on some holes-the earlier review is spot on.
And the front nine is more groomed and player friendly than the back nine-true also.
I disagree with the statement claiming the course itself is not taken care of- I'm guessing they went after some rainy days and the mowers hadn't had a chance to cut; but, our outing today had no complaints. Every hole was nicely mown, low fairways and manageable roughs. The greens are great on most holes (a few are in need of some attention-but I'm not complaining).
The "cupped" greens are awesome... there are 2 or three of these; I wish I had known it before hand... I would've attacked them a little more aggressively. I played it safe because I was leary of hitting over them.
Plenty of on course aids too (ball washers, trash cans, port-o-john, etc).
It's a little scary at times, especially for a driver who slices a lot, with a few roads close by... but, live on the edge people!
All-in-all a very pleasureable golfing experience!
You gotta take care of more than just the greens...
The only part of the course that was actually taken care of was the greens. the rest of the course was by far the worst I have played in my life. Layout had promise, with a couple interesting holes (I did particularly like #11) but that did not make up for how poorly taken care of the course was.
Pro shop worker was very nice, but not very knowledgeable. Hole #1 has a small dip into a creek, then comes back up to finally come to the fairway and then doglegs right. I asked him how far it was to carry to get to the fairway and he didn't even know. Shouldn't you know that?
Good Value
Treelined fairways that are narrow present a challenge - you have to place shots in the fairway to score. Many holes require less than driver to properly place the shot. They are letting the rough and 1st cut grow. New owners have spruced the place up and are giving a good value for the money.
Course Management is Paramount
This is an old course. Not much earth was moved; they followed the lay of the land. The front nine is more fun (and easier) than the back nine.
There are unusual features like the "cup" hole on #4. Caledonia has extreme elevation changes like the very steep (going up) #13. It has some very sloped fairways (e.g., #10 and #18). It has forced carries, and it has some landing areas you can't see when you make the shot. Small streams (yes, more than one) cross several fairways, and they are a royal pain, located where well-hit tee shots land or roll out.
Greens are small. They are in good condition, and puts run true.
Some of the fairways are almost hardpan which is why I rated course condition as three stars. Some tee boxes are so hard you just about have to find an old hole to get your tee into the ground.
The staff is very helpful. We were given ice for our drink containers at the pro shop. Course workers temporarily stopped a sprinkler on one green so we could putt out.
