Sunday Outing
Enjoyed playing! However the greens were terrible. The entire group was adding a minimum of one stroke.
I expressed that I would not recommend to a friend but only at this time until the greens are better. I will not return until next year.
Great features
Fairways and ruffs nice playing off of and looked great. Overall course is beautiful but the greens looked good from a distance but were not in good condition at the time I played. They were bumpy and the ball did not roll properly on the green.
do not play
got a hot deal on golfnow (now I see why so cheap). greens were in terrible condition, some were aerated some were not, lots of crabgrass/weeds, fairways were poorly cut and the dead clippings had not been blown. rough was thick you would lose your ball. not impressed and will not go back.
Horrible course conditions
Got a deal on golfnow was disappointed with the green, some were aerated some were not. The rough was so thick I lost a few balls. The fairways were uneven cut and they did not blow the grass clippings. Do not play.
Comeback course of the year
I used to live in Highland Creek and played it over 100 times. I never got tired of the layout. It was always a challenge and forced me to use every club in my bag.
Several years ago I returned to play my old track and found it to be in such a state of disrepair that I vowed never to return.
A friend convinced me to give it another try recently and I have to say I was very happy to see it in much better shape. While the bentgrass greens still struggle in the extreme heat, the bermuda fairways were lush. Recent rain prevented a good cutting so the fairways were a bit furry, and the rough was brutally thick, penalizing even the slightest of errors.
We played from the blue tees at 6520 yards, and at a slope of 133 it gave us all we could handle.
The rack rate of $56 is high in my opinion. I would put this course in the $45 tier, but it's all about supply and demand.
By biggest complaint was pace of play. We teed off around 9:00 a.m. which should be early enough to avoid a traffic jam, but we still had to wait several minutes on every shot. It's not enjoyable to spend 5+ hours in 95 degree heat.
Glad I played, and thrilled to see they're spending money on the course again. I still think #18 is one of the best finishing holes in the area.
Highland Creek
Very good course. You have to place your tee shot in the correct place, or you will pay. Most of the par 4's are short, so aim at the 150 marker and you will have a shot into the green.
Golf at Highland Creek
Was a Saturday and tee time was 11:39 and didn't tee off till 11:55 and was over 5 1/2 hours to play the round. Course was in good shape with a good lay out but I will not go back there on a weekend to play but maybe during the week.
bob s
Pace of play was poor. The ranger needs to do a better job of keeping golfers moving along. Fairways were not in good shape. The greens however rolled true but need some work on some of the holes.
Great layout and good test of golf
This is a great layout and a good test of golf for all levels. We played on Sunday - mid-morning and played in 4 hours and 20 minutes. Pace of play was good. Need to play the proper tees to your skill level as it is a good test of golf. Greens have improved as they cut them down to speed them up with the Poa Annua that is in the greens. They roll smooth now that they have been cut down. The fairways and tees need some attention, but they should improve as the grass grows as the temperatures get warmer. Pro Shop staff was very attentive and had a couple drinks after a round and had a good experience. Overall a great layout for the price.
Same ole Highland Creek
Bought a Friday 12:15pm tee time from GolfNow for $30. Tee'd off at 12:35pm. It was the typical thing that Highland does. Sets tee times 7 minutes apart, which would be fine if every one played from the tees they should play at and also was a 10 handicap but at this course I'd bet most people were at an 18+. Therefore just a traffic jam on every hole and shot. Avg wait time inbetween shots was about 6 minutes. Most greens are bumpy due to the weeds mixed in. The fairways are reflective of the greens. Tee boxes need some water and by some I mean a lot. Guy I was playing with broke two tees trying to stick them in the ground. Only finished 12 holes and left. It's the same ole Highland Creek. Good course if you can get a deal to play but don't expect ideal conditions or a speedy round. Set aside 5.5 to 6 hours especially on the weekends.
Do not play
I have played dirt track par 3 courses that had better greens than this course. The fairways were in decent shapes but hold way too much water in the Landing areas. Nice course layout but conditions were brutally bad. In order for me to
Play highland creek again they would
Have to pay me. Not worth a dime to play.
Much Improved
Played Highland Creek last week after not having played it since it was part of the Carolina Trail. Tees and fairways were in good shape. Greens had a few small left over holes due to aerification. Entire course drained very well after all the recent rain. Overall it was very obvious to see the positive changes the course has undergone in the past year or so. The staff seem to have the course heading in the right direction.
From the regular men's tees, 18 is an easily reachable par 5.....if you are not as you say "greedy"....
Old Carolina Trail
This was the first time I played this course in over a year. I have always heard and read negative reviews. I decided to see myself only cause I could get out under their top tier prices. This course is drastically overpriced. The course condition is not up to par with some of the lower price courses around town.
Potiential, but needs a little more.
The weather was beautiful as well as the neighborhood the golf course resides in. I based my desire to play there partly on hotel employee recommendation, golfnow offering, and their advertisement. So, my expectations were to be - very good. To start-no bag drop-no biggie. Attendant(cashier) very nice and helpful. Small bucket of range balls (approx. 20 balls) $6-little pricey for 20 balls. Cart was pretty slow, no I mean very slow for gas. I was unaware they had aerated and top dressed the greens recently. Combine that with not having been recently mowed or rolled and several hard mud patches -made for very slow inconsistent greens. I guess my pet peeves for golf courses other than consistent greens are fairly simple-give me level Tee boxes(I struggled a bit on most tee boxes to find a level spot-played from the blues) and manicured bunkers. The numerous bunkers I walked by or landed in (2) had several footprints and divots left there. At first I thought inconsiderate golfers but also noticed very few rakes. If you have a very large bunker (10-30yds)that has 1 or maybe 2 rakes good luck keeping pace of play if you want golfers to go find a rake. Spend the money provide lots more rakes-period. Highly suggest you have a golf measurement device because the distances (scorecards) were off quite a bit 147 vs 127 (pin front), 211 vs 186 (pin front), 151 vs 171 (pin middle) etc. All flags same color, no pin sheet, so if accurate distances are important to you, come prepared. I think with a few adjustments the course could be really nice. This was my experience on the day I was there. Your results may vary !
Greatly Improved.
Flew up from Florida to visit my son who lives in the Highland Creek neighborhood. I've played this course multiple times before and ive gotta say this past round was the best experience ive had with the course so far. Overall great up-keep from the maintenance crew and very knowledgeable and genuine guys in the Club House. Much Improved, keep it up!
Far too pricy for the course presented
Went out to play a weekend round of golf with my dad at our neighborhood course. HC used to be in great shape back when I was in high school but in the past 4-5 years the place has fallen apart. The tee boxes and greens look like they have been kept up with at all. For 60 dollars you should go find yourself a better course
Won't play again til greens improve
i live in Highland Creek and have always liked the layout; however the conditions are still disappointing. Early in the spring all the courses were in poor condition due to late I've storm and freezes. In June I gave it a try but fairways and greens were terrible. Gave it two months and tried again today. Fairways were much improved, but the greens are full of ball marks, bare or thin spots, and crab grass. I won't try again til greens are greatly improved. Disappointed because I live about a driver's distance from the first green and would like to play, but conditions drive my decision
Warning! Do not play this course!
I NEVER write reviews. I'm just too busy. But I travel all over the world and this course was easily in the worst shape of any course I've played in 10 years. The fairways had NO grass, weeds were taking over any of the dominant grasses and it was the first time I've ever played a course where we preferred to be in the rough vs. in the fairway. The staff, upon check-in, told us that the greens had been "lightly punched." Jeez, if that was a light punch we would hate to see what full aeration meant. It was like putting on a shag carpet. If you are a serious golfer, I am sure there are other options in the Charlotte area that you can choose from, but my foursome was highly upset the entire round experiencing a course had fallen into such disrepair. So, from one fellow golfer to another...STAY AWAY.
This comment is spot-on. This course deserves a "1". You literally have to putt through giant clumps of crabgrass on the greens. They are even too lazy to pull the ones directly near the hole. You'd have to pay ME to play here again.
