The juice ain't worth the squeeze...
I struggled with playing there or not based on the reviews I read about Birkdale. For the most part the negativity in the reviews were spot on. I left there after enjoying my round thinking I'd played several courses in this area for a lot less money and had just as good of an experience. Greens were beat up pretty good, and there was a guy watering them with a hose at 11:00 am, (which slowed some down while others were fast). There were areas in and around some of the fairways that needed attention. (Bear Spots). Just don't see value in the high cost to play there. Would not pay that to play there again. Ranger was nice.
No improvement
It had been about 5 years since the last time I had played this course and unfortunately the course is in the same bad condition as it was then. Too bad for us that live close by, great layout and great location but the course is in terrible condition.
Greens super slow and bumpy!
It had been a couple of years since I played and I was very disappointed in the greens as they were very bumpy (aerification from a few weeks ago) and extremely slow (not cut short as in the past). This course used to have some of the slickest greens for public play. I will not go back and you should post on golf now when aerified.
Accomodatig
The course was in great condition considering recent rains. There has been obvious effort put into improving the course & the service to significant effect. Those who play the course don't always know the rules & etiquette, but I am personally appreciative of the new owners' efforts.
Great pace of play
Holiday weekend, no Panthers game, great weather. Did not know what to expect as far as how busy course would be. Course was wide open and in great shape. Greens were the best they have looked all season. Played by myself, got around in a little over 2 hours!
Birkdale Getting back to the old ways!
Played here yesterday at 11:00am and i have to say birkdale is looking better and better each time i play it, the course is in great condition considering all of the rain that we have had lately, also the staff was very friendly and helpful when i arrived at the club, the bag drop guys grabbed my bags and put my clubs on a cart as soon as i pulled in, the greens are rolling good and the pace of play was ideal! I am definitely coming back and playing here! Birkdale has came back to be one of the nicest public courses in the city again! GO PLAY IT!!!
Course was amazing
Having heard mixed reviews regarding the course I tried to go in there with an open mind. With the weather being ok, rainy here and there the course with stood to the weather very very well. The greens were rolling fast and smooth and the pace of place was quick. I really enjoyed the course, staff and Arnies afterwards. I believe that what this course was to what it is now is a brilliant change around and would strongly recommend playing there in the future!
Positive Signs at Birkdale
As with all of the former Carolina Trail courses, I've kept my distance over the last several years. Recent positive reviews of Birkdale prompted me to give it another shot. The course has definitely seen work towards restoring it to its former glory. The greens, and fairways all had plenty of grass on them. A few tee boxes were a little thin here and there. The bunkers were actually quite nice with plenty of sand in them. Hopefully the new management company will continue to put more into the course. The Arnold Palmer design is demanding, with precision off the tee a must. The greens require you to hit to the proper level or section to have any chance at birdie. Most greens are either long and narrow or short and wide. We were told that there was an outing earlier that morning, and the pin placements were a little curious. They all seemed to be tucked into the hardest possible spots on each green. The practice facilities are Birkdale are better than average, although the putting green was thin in some spots. There was a beverage cart making the rounds on a chilly Sunday afternoon. The pro shop is well stocked, but I wished the service had been a bit better. I booked my round on GolfNow, but the attendant knew neither this fact, nor the appropriate rate to charge me. The starter and rangers were pleasant and helpful. Pace of play was OK for a weekend afternoon. Our threesome got around in roughly 4 hours.
GREAT COURSE
This is a great course, the course was in perfect shape and the pace of play was good we played 18 holes in just under 4 hours! the pros in the shop were very friendly and helpful. The bag drop staff came out and grabbed our bags and put them on the cart for us and when we got finished they even cleaned the clubs! This course has come a long way and I will be playing here often because the experience felt like I was walking into a private club. YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS COURSE!!!
Great course
I recently went out with a small group and really enjoyed this course. The new management group looks to have done a great job cleaning this course up to what it once was. Very challenging course, excellent food and drink prices. Great course!
Terrible Greens
I still can't believe they charged me $65 to play on greens that were so bad. A 3' putt was almost unmakable due to the bumps and bad places in the green. Of course no mention of that when I was paying!
A must play course!
Having not played here in a while I must say that this course has improved massively. The course was extremely green and lush with brand new bunkers which unfortunately I hit a lot :(. The staff was extremely friend and took care of me a lot better than other courses I have played in the area. Having a drink in the bar afterwards was very pleasant and enjoy with the atmosphere very rich and lively. If I played more golf I would definitely look to be a member there! I really enjoyed my round of golf and would recommend it to everyone!
Disappointing, to say the least
This course is a huge disappointment. Arnold would be embarrassed with this place. There are dirt spots absolutely everywhere. We tried to play roll your ball to grass (it was the bad), but you couldn't even find grass spots (especially around the greens). It's not only winter kill and because of the drought...it is neglect. Out of the 5 courses we played in NC, this was the least playable by far (and ironically the most expensive). The only good thing I can say about the conditions are that the greens were better than average (but so were all of the others minus one that I played).
We waited behind a slow 4 some, which the ranger informed us was a group of "bosses" of the course (which is why he said he wouldn't say anything to them). You would think if you were "bosses" of somewhere that you would want to be good ambassadors for the course and let people through. The ranger was nice, but he still could and should have told them to let us through. That's his job, isn't it?
It's pretty clear to me that the staff doesn't even give a care about the place...
Overall this course is worth skipping. Don't bother.
Must play course
It was my first time playing the course and I really loved it. All the staff where great from the ranger/starter to bag drop and the guys in the shop. The course was in great condition, greens roles great! Fairways were running firm and I felt like I hit it really far. This course is great and I really enjoy it and would definitely recommend anyone to go there and play it!!
Birkdale Starts to Recover
Every time I play this course the pace is slow and the hazards are unkempt but it's clear that Birkdale has bounced back in its attempt to become a top class golf club. Very positive projections. Still too pricy for the past induct but a stellar improvement.
Great Arnold Palmer Course
If you are an average golfer you will love this course. Arnold Palmer knows exactly how golf should be played and has set this course up for the joy of the game.. Don't get me wrong its a challenge it is not however set up for the pros.
That is a plus for me im tired of every course thinking they are hosting a pro event..
I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a good day of golf..
Gets worse each year sadly
This used to be a great course but it got bought and the group running it is not doing it any favors in terms of investing in it and keeping it up.
Limited flight golf balls on the range are a starter for not being impressed, 5-6 hour rounds are the norm, it's expensive, and the place gets HAMMERED with golf rounds which means the turf is so so at best as are the greens...
Sorry to say that I'm not a fan and doubt I'll be back. Shame, it used to be a really good Arnold Palmer design but like all things it needs to be kept up in order to remain good and relevant and Birkdale is not what it once was.
No need for cart path only
It was a beautiful, dry day but carts were path only because they had plugged and fertilized some fairways. This was not announced ahead (and should have been to confirmed tee times) and as a disabled guy, I would not have driven 2 hours to play an otherwise great course. Been there 4 times before, but probably not again.
New Ownership
Golf course with past problems, new owner and they are really putting a lot of money into the course and it shows, pace of plays is good, Arnold Palmer design course, great bar with great food to wine down after a good round of golf. Very nice practice or warm up facility, Go Play
Hate to say it but that's a spot on assessment of this what used to be a really good track. It's gone down hill and to have Mr. Palmer's name on it is unfair to his legacy. Pity really....
