Great Value
I was invited by some friends to play Mariners Landing in an outing at Smith Mountain Lake. I live about 2 and half hours away and it was well worth the drive. The staff was very professional and the golf course proved to be a tremendous layout in very good condition. The greens rolled very true and expect nice lies around the greens. We had a great time. If you are in the area you may want to stop in and play this one.
Nice staff/Poor conditions
Small facility with small clubhouse but staff was friendly. Got a good deal on Golfnow.com so it wasn't too bad of an experience. The course layout and some holes were fun with one par three on the lake that was pretty cool, some many par 5's on the back. Conditions of the tees and fairways were some of the worst I have seen in the area. Greens were super slow but fairly plush and soft. Pace was ok since it wasn't busy at all.
Fun course to play with a variety of holes- not boring
i had a great time and the price was fantastic. The course was in great shape helped by the Spring rains. Some of the holes are difficult, but fair. You need to be able to hit your drive straight or the woods await you. The water holes are very pretty, but again a good shot and you are fine- miss it and go to the bag. Putting green is adequate and if I had enough time I would have taken advantage of the driving range. The staff is very nice and would be great if they had a larger selection of food for lunch. All in all it is a very fun course which I have played several times on vacation.
I am not a member. This is the course that I play more than any other because the staff treats us as members.
I enjoy every round here. The view of Smith Mountain from the signature 5th hole is great. The layout is second to none in this area. You will need to make good shots to keep the ball in play. If you do not have to ad any penalty strokes for balls in the water a low score can be had here. They have a well stocked pro shop in season. The conditions of the greens have been great thru the Fall and winter if you do not mind rolling the ball in the fairway or rough to find a good lie overall playability of the course is good. The conditions of the course get better every year. I would love to see it get more play so they could invest back into the course.
Best shape it has been in years.
The tee boxes and greens were in great shape. Greens were firm and putted true. In some places the fairways were spotted with different kinds of grass but not patchy with dirt. Very enjoyable round, not slowed down or rushed. When I pulled in the parking lot there was maybe ten cars and when I left there were only four.
Great course, fairways need watering
I've played this course a number of times and it has a lot of challenge. There is water, elevation changes, trees, marsh, etc. It requires some smart play to score well.
The greens are typically in great shape and roll true. They are fast, but not super fast. Some are multi-tiered.
The clubhouse and staff are OK, but nothing special. The driving range is acceptable.
The only real drawback are the fairways. They always seem like they could use watering or more care. There are some bare patches on several of them.
Still, if you like a challenging course, and you can deal with less than pristine fairways, this course is an excellent value.
