The jets are fast, the course isn't

If loud noises bother you bring some earplugs as the jets from Oceanna Naval Air Station are right overhead all the time. Played behind a lot of high school kids whose pace was as if every putt was for the Open. Course layout, for all its publicity, isn't that special. Challenging rough, not so long but the ball sits so down in the Bermuda that you can't play much over a 7 iron to get out. Staff a little brusque to my newcomer questions. OK conditioning but after taking three hours to play nine holes I left and won't be coming back.

Great course, great value.

Staff was great, starter was friendly and gave us a quick once over about the course. Conditions were good ( way better than Hells Point round earlier in week). Layout was awesome. Once waste areas grow in it will be a real challenge. Would have loved to play when they were as designed as we were told they once were sand waste areas but if the plan is to have them grass waste areas it will be a real challenge. Price was great at $39/ player for a Dye/Strange course. Beverage cart came often but wish they had coolers not bags of ice but overall we were pleased with everything about our round.

Nice course, great value

1st time playing here. I was impressed by the course. Apart from a few tee boxes in rough shape and people not repairing their divots correctly (actually some greens looked like the moon) I was impressed with the course. Drainage in bunkers was a problem too (mini lakes). Nice fairways and even nicer rough! Friendly staff. Played on a Saturday afternoon and had a 3:40 pm tee-time. We showed up over 2 hours early and the pro shop let us out as soon as we were ready.

A Pete Dye/Curtis Strange Course for $30?!?!?!

I live in Philadelphia, PA, where 90% of golf courses are really amazing private country clubs = I can't play.

To play a nice public golf course, you have to either go to New Jersey, or drive 30-45 minutes to the suburbs. Cost to play is very expensive, especially on the weekends.

To come to Virginia Beach National and play 18 holes for $30 with cart was ridiculous. I mean a Pete Dye/Curtis Strange designed course for $30? With cart? I need to move to down south.

The weather was ridiculously hot, but other than that the course was in good shape. I love the driving range, practice area, and putting green. Very good facilities to warm up and get the feel of the speed of the greens. Greens on the course was little beat up, and I guess no matter you play, you find people who refuse to fix their ball marks. C'MON MAN!

The course was challenging, with some short narrow holes, to dog left and dog rights. Unless you are hitting into the water or snap hooking or slicing really bad, it is very hard to lose balls!

I went to the course without a tee time, and the staff was very friendly in allowing to walk on and play "at my leisure". I met a fellow single who I joined for 9 holes. Than played with a twosome for the back 9. One thing I noticed was the inconsistency of the sand in the bunkers. I have been told through local players that they have not put in new sand for awhile. So some bunkers were hard as rocks, while others were nice and soft. In my opinion the sand was not up to par for a course as nice as this. I am sure Pete and Curtis would agree as well. =]

Overall it was an AWESOME course that I will come back and play again.

slow play

The course was very nice and challenging, but pace of play was very slow. It was a very hot day and it took over five hours to play and we did not see a ranger to try to speed up play. With the slow play and the heat we had a tough time finishing or getting into a groove.

Great overall experience!

Fantastic course and facilities! Staff was extremely friendly and helpful from the moment I dropped my bag off. Played from the blue tees and the course was plenty challenging. Greens are quick and roll true. Lot's of "waste" areas which look like they could've been hazards at some point. Think Pinehurst at the 2014 US Open and you get the idea. Very few blind shots, and a little local knowledge helps but I never found myself saying, "if only I knew about that hazard...". No GPS in the carts, so make sure your devices are charged up. Pace of play was a little slow, just over 4.5 hours, but it was a Sat morning/afternoon. Well worth the price, I've played courses for twice the price that were not nearly this great of an overall experience! I will certainly be back and would recommend this course in a heartbeat!

Always enjoy VB National

I always enjoy playing VB National. It's challenging, visually appealing and a nice treat occasionally. Something has happened to the tee bixes, though. Many were in bad shape and on sine holes, the white tees were moved as much as 50 yards. Otherwise, another enjoyable round.

The next diamond in the ruff?

I did pick the hottest day of my vacation to play the course. My overall experience was great with this course. I enjoyed most of the staff but the assistant golf pro the minute I walked into the club house made me feel like I did not belong. He looked me up and down a couple of times and seemed like he was not sure what to say to me.

Then the gentleman working the counter came in and assisted me and he was great to work with. After I left the club house the course was beautiful the greens played at perfect pace and the were well kept. The fairways were in great condition. There are some challenging par 5's and even some par 3's with water in play. It was a great round and I enjoyed talking with their staff. They had great insight of the course and after I left the clubhouse I would give them 5 stars on the experience.

Great Value

Course was in very good shape and all the greens ran true. Bunkers were a little rough probably due to the amount of rain we have received. Overall great value for the money and will definitely play VB National again.

No character anymore

I haven't played out there in quite a while and it's sad to see they took away all the waste bunkers and the character of the golf course, they even took away the tournament tee that the nationwide tour use to play, overall in decent shape but sure not worth the 55 dollars we paid.

Great Place to Play Golf

First time I ever played Virginia beach national and the course was in very good condition. Fairways are a little tight in areas would not recommend using a driver on certain holes and waste areas are on the sides of the fairways if you hit in those you can still find your ball pretty easily and move it out to the rough. I would recommend to anyone who wants to have a challenge of an awesome layout golf course.

Course needs a lot of rehab of the fairway, waste bunkers and greens.

I was hoping for a great course experience at VA Beach National, but I was disappointed. I found a lot of bare mud and dirt areas in the fairways. The grass areas even around the greens were sparse and you had to look for any grassy places. There was fertilizer on the fairways but minimal grass. The golf ball almost always had a mud spot on it whether landing from the tee or the fairways. The practice tee had more grass than the fairways, even the area around the chipping green was bare dirt. Now, I know it was only early May, but the grass at the condo was dark green and thick. If the course can be rehabilitated, I liked the layout. For a first time player, the poor conditions made it very difficult to get a target from the Championship tees. But after playing the first nine, the fairways were easier to pick landing spots. Not because of greenery, but the hole layouts were more straight forward to see. The Greens were grassy and had some texture of a diamond shaped potato masher, it was an unusual appearance for me. The greens rolled well, smooth, and true. I think that the course needs work, but has the potential of shaping up if well cared for. I would like to play it again when the fairways and green are at their summer best..

One of the best in the area!!!

Course is always in good shape from tee to green. Always upkeep in process, well designed also. Course is somewhat forgiving on errant tee shots. Green can be very deceiving pending your leave. Green putt true, course has always been in my golf rotation.
