That 90s golf course
It is appropriate that Golden Horseshoe’s Green course sits at a mile-and-a-half remove from its older sibling. Juxtaposing its high-1990s styling with the traditional architecture of Colonial Williamsburg might have created too strange a contrast.
Few golf courses are purer expressions of Rees Jones’ mid-career vision. More than 100 bunkers – both flat-bottom circles and meandering amoebas – line fairways and greens that wind through dense forest and wetlands. They mingle with ever-present containment mounding that most plastic surgeons would consider ambitious. The putting surfaces themselves feature mostly distinct decks and subtle overall tilts. While the par 4s are rather monotonous, the course does draw strength from its par 5s, particularly the 15th and 18th, which aims straight at the clubhouse for a stately finish well in line with the cacophony that precedes. Challenging and well-kept, with particularly smooth putting surfaces, the Green is best viewed as a modern museum-piece golf course, and best by erring on the shorter side when choosing your tee box.
Challenging but manageable
While there are lots of obstacles in the form of traps and mounds, there is a good landing area on most holes for any drive that may fall short of the target.
Nice Alternative to the Gold Course
For significantly less price, we felt the Green Course was pretty close in layout and conditions as the Gold Course so the value is great. No complaints!
Wet
Cart path only on very hilly course. Over six hours to play waited every shot. Very wet should not have been open. We had over 13000 steps by our watches. Money should have been refunded. I play to a 6 hdcp at Mystic in Ancaster Ontario.
Wet as a swamp
Cart path only. Over 6 hour round. Fairways way to wet. Over twelve thousand steps on hilly course. Should have been refunded money. I am a 6 hdcp and would not play this again.
Not a great course for cart path only. Very hilly but got my excercise.
Excellent Trek
A must play!! Excellent trek!! Enjoyable course to play!!
Love This Course
Have played it twice now, and it’s one of my favorite courses. Conditions were great both times. A few holes are tricky, but overall the course is fair and somewhat forgiving. Moguls are on both sides of many fairways, and unless you hit it on the non fairway side of the moguls, the ball will generally funnel back toward the fairway. Greens are pretty uniform with speed.
Very disappointed
I was on vacation and booked a foursome through GolfNow. Unfortunately my father in law’s knee was bothering him and he couldn’t play, which I tried calling the course the night before to let them know but the pro shop closed at 5pm so no one answered the phone when I called at 6:15pm. So I showed up with a threesome which originally they said was not a problem. We paid $76 per golfer with everything which was totally fair. We had to rent clubs for $60 per guy and the clubs were great for the righty’s and average for me the lefty, which I totally expected. We bought 12 beers on the course and two cigars. Two days later they notify GolfNow that one golfer didn’t show up so they bill me for the one no show. Absolutely ridiculous after already paying the booking fees and spending $120 in club rentals, plus everything else we bought on the course. This has happened many of times in New York wether it be someone couldn’t get out of work, sick, etc and never once in over 20 years have I ever been billed for a no show. Regardless how friendly the staff was and the course conditions, I will never go back to either of their courses again. We go on vacation there every year and I will never choose this course again because that’s totally ridiculous if you ask me. I hope you all feel the same as I do
Oct 2022 at the Horseshoe Green course
Staff friendly and accommodating to newcomers to the area. Course was wet following heavy rains night before and we had noon Tx. Staying on the cart path was challenging as they have some long par 4's. Those working on the course to drain water from the traps were great at stopping while golfing. Not many people out that day so we really had the course to ourselves so no complaints for the pace. Definity worth playing. Use the Golf Now app for a good price. Overall course in pretty good shape.
