Great course, terrible clubhouse staff
The course is fantastic. The greens and fairways were well maintained. Overall a beautiful course. Unfortunately, my experience was tainted by the staff member in the clubhouse. I paid for 18 + cart in the golfnow app. Upon arriving at the course, I was told that the cart was not included, even after showing a screenshot of my reservation. The staff member was very adament about not giving me a cart. I decided to walk. Right before I teed off, I get called back into the clubhouse where the staff member offered me a "senior rate" of $6. I reluctantly agreedand paid. Once the transaction was complete, the debit card machine showed my purchase as $9. Overall a very frustrating experience in the clubhouse. I will not be returning after the experience I had.
Golf is Hard Enough
I played the course on Saturday with 3 friends. We're not great golfers, but we're not slow either. Just looking to have a nice round on a beautiful fall day in Wisconsin... We didn't.
We teed off with no one in front of us at 9:40am. We were all riding in carts. From the second hole on, we had a walking group directly on our tail pressuring us. We eventually tried to let them play through but they told us to keep going. We must have spent an extra half hour during the round searching for golf balls that were either in the fairway or the near rough because there were so many leaves on the course. I understand it's a golf course in the woods in the fall, I expect leaves, but other courses in the area are using blowers to clear more of the playing area making it easier to find your ball. Many greens weren't even clear. On the 14th hole the ranger acknowledged the leaves but told us to close the gap with the group ahead. It wasn't for a lack of trying, but we don't split the fairway with every tee shot and were doing our best not lose perfectly good balls in the first cut of rough. This warning from the ranger and the added pressure of the group on our tail definitely didn't help any of us hit better golf shots either. I lost 12 balls at least that weren't in water. Despite all of this, we finished in 3 hours and 50 minutes, but that's apparently too slow at County.
To top it all off after just finishing on 18 and walking back to the cart, we see another patron start jogging to us from the first tee. He passive-aggressively says "just something to consider" and hands me a pre-printed laminated card chastising us for playing music in the cart. I wish I kept the card to type it verbatim but I was so rattled I threw it out. It essentially said golf is hard enough without music playing while putting or swinging and that you wouldn't talk while in someone's backswing so why would you play loud music? The card's message ended with a suggestion to where earbuds next time... In his defense, the cart was parked on the first tee-side of the 18th green. In my defense, the music wasn't any louder than it was when the ranger talked to us (and he made no mention of it) and the song playing at the time was "Surrender" by Cheap Trick. It wasn't explicit rap or heavy metal. I can't entirely blame this interaction on the golf course, but if that's the clientele they're attracting, someone so against music on the course he keeps printed cards in his bag, I won't be back soon. And that is really disappointing to me because I grew up close to the course and it was one of my favorites. It's a beautiful, usually very well kept course, but it's not a country club. The guy's card was right, golf is hard enough. That's why I play music and drink beer.
Great Value
A fine course with a few unusual holes.
Greens were good although somewhat marked up with play earlier in the day.
For a public course this is an excellent value and fun course to play.
Golfing gem
gem of a golf course, best in a way of isolation... once you start your round , you are taken away from the world around you !
Traditional Course
Brown county is well maintained. Four tee boxes for all talents. Mature trees line the course and although most fairways are generous, the tree create risk/rewards. Public, county operated excellent course and experience.
Dejavue?
I absolutely loved this old course. I felt it reminded me of the course I grew up on-West Bend Country Club. After doing some research, I realized they were both designed by Bob Lohmann!
Great Municipal Course
Brown County is an excellent municipal course and one of the best public options in the Green Bay area. The course is always kept in good condition with only the 4th hole ever having any major drainage issues from what I've seen. Despite playing through trees on almost every hole, the course is not overly narrow and gives players options on how aggressive they want to be on certain shots. The course is filled with doglegs that move in both directions and only has a few places where players can typically lose a golf ball. Greens are always the most important aspect of a course and Brown County makes sure to keep theirs in good shape at speeds that are quick, but still playable for all skill levels.
Great layout
Course has a great layout. Greens were a little beat up but would play again
Great track / friendly staff
My wife and I played Brown County for the first time today. It is a very nice track and the pace of play was exceptional. (18 holes in 3 1/4 hours) Additionally, every member of the staff (pro shop and restaurant) were friendly and professional. We highly recommend the course.
