Classic beauty
Very impressed with Oakbourne. Very solid test of golf - challenging and hard but not ridiculous or gimmicky. Easy to see why the USGA selected it to host a 2021 US Open qualifier. Got to play on a reciprocal from Le Triomphe with my cousin who’s a member there. Greens did have some damage on the front but all in all, very difficult greens. Soft but very quick. Smaller size greens with some very difficult spots for pin placement. Course conditions very nice. Gotta keep it in play because off fairway bad lies and lots of tree trouble. Lots of doglegs!!! Some real pretty holes - the first par 5 on the back just a gem. Plus being so close to Lafayette airport made it a treat to watch airplanes. Just a real nice day.
Oakbourne CC Review
Oakbourne located in Lafayette, Louisiana Is consistently rated in the top five in the state. It is an original Dick Wilson design featuring 18 holes of non-residential parkland golf. It is an excellent walking course with closely adjacent greens and tees. Unusual for South Louisiana is an elevation change due to the Coteau Ridge running through the course creating an upper and lower section. The Miniverde ultra dwarf Bermuda greens feature a number of undulations typically framed by high flashed bunkers. Recent tree removal efforts (which I hope will.continue) have greatly improved playability and turf conditions. This is a shotmakers course and always a challenge despite not being overly long - 7000 yds from the tips.
The course was home to the Cajun Classic PGA tournament In the 1950’s and 60’s and was played by luminaries including Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Louisiana native and PGA Championship winner Lionel Hebert was a long time member and resident touring professional.
This is a stock membership private country club. It is well worth a play if in the area.
