Time to irrigate
The greens were in great shape, but the tee boxes and fairways barely have any grass growing.
in awful shape
The entire course is in terrible condition outside the greens. Teebox's are dirt and the fairways are as well. We were allowing everyone to move their ball on eveyr shot to try and find a patch of grass to play off of and sometimes, that was 20+ feet away
what if...
every 10 yards or so, you just had driving range mats? So, instead of all the wasted resources trying to grow and maintain grass where IT doesn't want to grow, us golfers can simply move our tee or approach shots to the nearest range mat and proceed from there. Just put $$ into the greens - don't even need grass tees, right? WE are always moving our tee shot onto something that use to be grass, anyway, amiright??

So much room for improvement
I have been playing this course for awhile. It is a good value for the money but that might be the problem. They are putting work into the green complexes and it shows. No complaints about the greens but the rest of the course however is in dire need of help. There are visible dirt patches in most of the fairways. If you don’t want to hit off of hard packed earth then bring your foot wedge. The layout of the course is great and offers a nice long course. The course is not overly challenging so will appeal to a wide range of golfers. I would gladly pay more to play if they would use the money to improve the fairways condition. I didn’t even mention the compacted soil in the bunkers that are in desperate need of fresh sand and raking. Overall I would still recommend this course to very budget based golfers and newer golfers improving their game but if you are used to nice lush fairways and bent grass greens rolling fast this would not be the place for you.

Still much improvement needed
We were told to start at the back 9 since there was a ladies tournament playing a slower pace, then to go back to the front 9 to finish. However, once we were done with the back 9, an ambassador asks us to go back and play the back 9 again since the front 9 were apparently still playing on a slow pace. However, we were stuck in between 2 tournaments. Long story short, don't really see myself playing here again. It's too many bad experiences.

Decent
Bummer 50 gets you an average course nowadays but still chula is a good time. Greens are great, lots of dirt in the fairway though.
Fun layout though, narrow fairways in the front. Back 9 is much better than front

It's a public Course
My only real issue is that the ground was really hard, so hitting chunky shots is almost certain. But after all, it's a public course and I'm sure the staff works hard on the up keep. Pace of play is great. You get the occasional people who will play 3 balls at a time. Which I have too before, but only when nobody is behind me. Overall good value.

Play CVGC for a fun, challenging, and affordable time
Designed by Chula Vista's own late great Billy Casper. I know, I know, it's not rolling lush green fairways on every hole. Put things into perspective: It's a municipal course that's seen better days and we're in a continuing drought. The new manager and his dedicated team are doing the best they can with the resources they have. Definite improvements are clearly being made. The greens are looking GREAT. A few new bridges. Fixing irrigation issues. The snack and drink service is better than ever. And the quality of golf you get at CVGC can't be beat for the current green fees. Get an added discount if you can buy a resident's card.

Poor fairways and tee boxes
Poor fairways and tee boxes. Greens were nice. 2 or 3 holes had the crew watering the greens as we were chipping in. Also the sprinklers were on on one of the fairways and another holes rough. All that couples with the slow to average pace of play made it a strange experience to say the least. If the fairways were nicer I would still play it again. But not with those fairways. In the rough, good luck.
