Great course
Golf Now specials are a must. Good pace…. Good staff….. course is in good condition. Excellent maintenance staff…. Still need to rope off some areas to prevent some golfers from driving thru damp areas and messing up their course. Greens in good- great shape.
Good golf
Course is not back to 100% yet but well on its way.
Little spotty in fairways but greens are fine.
2nd review
2nd review. Course continues to get better even with a large amount of play. Yardage markers have been added. Greens have been able to be cut a bit shorter and are rolling extremely well.
Best greens in the area by far. Grass continues to grow into some of the bare spots. Tees, fairways, traps, and greens are in excellent condition. Players are using their cart sand to fill in divots and are fixing their pitch marks on greens. This is the best true championship golf course and test of skill in a large mile radius, and is priced at a fantastic bang for your buck. Pace of play continues to be great on weekdays and good on weekends. Go play and see for yourself!
Lots of potential
Interesting layout with some challenging holes. Greens are pretty good. Fairways and tees need some work. Rough varies from 2" lush grass to cow pasture to bare dirt. Several tee shots are blind with no signs or even a course map on the scorecard, so I aimed for the wrong fairway a couple times. Lots of woods and water and gnats were hungry, so bring bug spray. Yardage markers in fairway were hard to see. Could not tell how far back the hole was on the green on many approaches. Staff was awesome, as were the other golfers.
2nd Time playing this course
The overall condition of the course was very nice. The greens are big and wide as I mentioned bf on previous review. They are also very slow as they are looking to keep them plush and green looking. I am writing this second review bc of the cost of this course. While this course is nice it is not a $50-$60 dollar during the week course IMO. There are other courses within 40 miles of this course on both sides that are cheaper and just as nice. It is my opinion if this course hopes to survive after the newness wears off it will adjust its pricing accordingly.
I would refer the managers of this course to several local courses . Who offer more competitive rates and have no increases for those people they consider not to be local. Although nonlocal rating is done often in the MB area. This is not MB where tourists abound.
Also would ask management to remember the SCJGA for reduced rates for the kids or the use of YOC ( youth on course). This makes it more desirable for fathers and mothers to bring their kids and doesn't break the bank.
Cool.course
Old school course..left abandoned for 13 years now reopening. They have done a remarkable job bringing the course back...you can still see some scars but overall great job. Greens roll good but very slow. They are letting them fill back in before cutting shorter. Tee boxes are fantastic!!! Fairways are great...course personality is starting to shine through...Be prepared it will make you use every club in your bag. Can't wait to see this course later in the year! Friendly staff!!
Wellman + Rees Jones = Gem
Wellman is open again after 13 years. Course is in excellent condition - teeboxes, fairways, bunkers, and greens. Greens running a little slow right now but run true. The slight tweaks to the layout made by the Rees Jones design team are fantastic (took a lot of trees out, greens are larger with some challenging undulation, greens not guarded frontside by bunkers which allow for run up shots). This course will be one of the best public courses in South Carolina by fall. You will not find a better bang for your buck that everyone can play in the area. The course is already more cost efficient to play and in better shape than many at the beach, and you will not be waiting around on every shot playing a 6 hour round. Staff is very hospitable. This is a very fun course to play for all skill levels if you play from the correct tees. Older gentlemen may need to play a red/gold tee combo. Wellman Golf Club is a gem.
The Wellman
Great New/old course! The design is outstanding the greens are great. Some of the fairways were a little chewed up from golf carts riding thru wet fairways. Management probably needs to rope off some of these areas to protect their investment. BC a lot of golfers are just gonna ride thru no matter if they are wet. JMO. Majority of the fairways were very nice also. Sand traps had real sand and greens were large and challenging! Thoroughly enjoyed the course and the staff.
Excellent and Amazing
I played at the Wellman Golf Club at the first time and it was amazing! The staffs are friendly and the condition of the green and fairway is outstanding. The fairways are wide and long. Overall, the golf course is well-maintained and beautiful. I will definitely play again.
Nice and Challenging
Fairways and Tee Boxes were very nice. Greens were unbelievably filled with slope and I three putted a ton. Ended up rage quitting on 17 after my 6th 3-putt. Also, looking for a new mallet putter (broke mine on 17). Loved the staff though.
Value and Friendly
The value for this track is off the charts.
It's a really decent course
Not overly difficult but difficult enough.
A little but of lippage on a few of the holes but otherwise its a really decent course.
Staff friendliness is great.
Pace is great.
Would recommend
Great Value
Hard to believe the course sat for 13 yrs.
Greens are super decent. Although a few of the holes seemed to be lipped at the top. Fairways and tee boxes good.
Not a very difficult course
But such a great value to knock around for a few hrs. Great pace.
And staff exceptionally friendly.
Pro shop closes at 5 on weekdays.
Would recommend.
And will play again
First Impression of Wellman
First time ever playing at Wellman. They have put a lot of time and effort in reviving the course. Greens are nice and fast. Beautiful course and clubhouse. The only thing that needs updating are the cart paths but I’m sure that will come in due time. Can’t wait to get back out and play again.
You may want to play with a bright pink golf ball… lots of trees and wooded areas (especially holes 8,10, and 12!)
I Get That It’s New But….$55?
Not worth the money. Play it once to say you did but there’s way too many options close-by that are cheaper with much better conditions.
