Rain Delay
Hi,
I had a tee time for noon with 3 members. We paid on Golfnow and it unfortunately was storming during our tee time. We only got thru 5 holes. I talked to Tim at jimmy Clay Golf Course and he said GolfNow could provide a refund or rain check on my account. Please let me know if you need any other information. Thank you.
Jimmy Clay - Pleasantly Surprised
Since I live in Round Rock, I rarely get out south to play, and when I do I usually play Roy Kizer. However, I saw a good deal on GolfNow, and decided to play Jimmy Clay. It has been about 4 years since I last played Clay, and was impressed with the overall course conditions. Fairways were decent, and greens were in good condition (although a little slow). Not many people out on a Thursday, so the pace of play was fine. Will definitely go back.
Solid value
Been playing this course and its next door neighbor (KIzer) for years. Masks required in and around the clubhouse, you know the drill. Course was in great shape due to recent heavy rains. Fairways very good. Greens rolled true albeit a bit slow. Finished my round in about 4 hours. No drinking water on the course so be ready to bring your own. I prefer to walk and this course definitely fits the bill.
Greens
JC is well worth the money.
Greens are in the best shape ever.
Fun course
In great shape after lockdown
I haven’t played Jimmy Clay in a couple years, but it is in great shape right now. The fairways are beautiful. Some of the tee boxes are a little hard, and the greens roll pretty slow, but true. Definitely a good golfing experience for the relatively low price.
Revisiting Jimmy Clay...
I hadn't played Clay in probably 16-17 years before heading out a few times in the last month.
The course wasn't really anything like I remembered, and in a way, that's kind of the problem with the course... it's not very memorable. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad course and it does have some interesting things going on, but it's a pretty standard old muni.
The front 9 is pretty tight. 1 is a tough tee shot and a tough hole. 3 is one of the cooler holes... a very tight dogleg right... long enough that you don't want to give up too much distance off the tee, but tight enough that driver is risky. 4 and 7 are pretty decent par 5s (the tee shot on 4 is obscured by some trees that are the bane of my existence). 8 is possible the best hole on the front 9, a challenging dogleg left that requires a good drive.
The back 9 opens up a little bit, but also sacrifices some memorability in the process. 10 is a nice hole with a dramatically uphill approach shot... it makes for an interesting decision on your second shot as it's a fairly reachable par 5, but you don't want to get stuck on the hill. After that the back is fairly non-descript until you get to 18, which is one of the hardest tee shots I've encountered in my life... you just have to hit it straight or you're in trouble. Maybe if you have a higher ball-flight than me it's not such an issue... who knows.
Overall, Clay is a good track. The conditions the last month have been solid... greens are sometimes slow, but they are not bad at all. In terms of practice facilities, they are hands down the best available at the muni courses.
I would still choose Morris Williams if I could only play one round, but Clay is worth a visit.
Nice Layout
This is a very walkable course with shade trees for interest and cover when it's hot weather. The only downside is the greens were really slow and bumpy since it appears they aerated recently.
Average is the best way to describe.
Everything about Jimmy Clay is average.
I got nothing bad to say...but I'd rather play Roy Kizer. Kizer is kind of like a Links course.
Good Muni course
First time playing here, so didn’t know what to expect. Overall it was a good layout. Fairways a bit thin coming out of cold weather. Greens were moderately slow, but in great condition. Didn’t see any 100/150/200 yard markers - that would be helpful. Driving range, chipping green, and putting green we’re very good. Staff was very helpful, friendly, and helpful. I’ll play it again, but probably during the week when it is not completely full.
Jimmy Clay
Austin golfers should proud of this municipal course. I played as a single in 3.5hours on a 66°day.
Not that I reccomend visiting them, the bunkers were as well maintained as any I've seen. Very difficult to lose a ball here unless you go in the water.
Jimmy Clay
Jimmy ClayCourse was fun, staff was pleasant. People I played the round Will were very enjoyable.
