Good illustration of how tight this course plays. The 11th tee. Fairway not 20 yards wide. Forty foot elevation change to green. Miss the fairway and lose the ball. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 12/01/2017

First time playing this course
The course was in good shape. There were some holes where they let the bunkers go but the greens were in excellent condition. Fun course that I will play again.
Affordable course
It was cheap and the pace of play was good. Course was not in very good shape and bunkers were terrible. Tee boxes were in bad shape as were some of the greens. Course layout was good.
Weekday bargain
Know what to expect. Keep it in the fairway or you won’t keep it. Greens in good condition, fairways ok. Traps need lots of work. It’s a roller coaster but a bargain for the Golf Now rate
Tight Fairways and Uneven Lies!!
Heatherwood is in really good shape. The greens are really nice and very well taken care of. The fairways are very very tight. Deep woods usually flanking the holes.. The elevation changes are sever and make the holes challenging.
The staff is very nice, very professional.
They also have very reasonable priced membership options.
You’ve read it in other reviews: Bring lots of balls!! I lost almost a dozen out there today.
I like to walk and that is not an option on this layout. But wanted to take advantage of the Golf Now deal. Really glad I did. But Heatherwood kicked my butt! Happy trails!
Challenging in a good way!
Very diverse terrain with beautiful views and wildlife. Note to self: bring lots of balls!
Good Condition - Tight Layout
Great value for the money on the hot deal. Course was in good shape and greens were in great condition just a little slow due to rain that morning. It’s a very challenging course with tight fairways and lots of uphill elevations, but once again for the money you can’t beat it. Would definitely play the hot deal again, just be prepared to hit straight.
Tight Short hilly
First time playing on quick notice. Worthy of $30 for 18 & cart and for short straight players. Leave the driver at home if you play fades & draws and are long. I can play this course best next time with only a 5 iron or maybe a hybrid if you play with one. Very tight fairways and if you are off then you have lost your ball so no forgiveness! Very scenic but the greens are pretty slow & bunkers are mostly shot right now. Hopefully they are going to repair all soon. Not a par 3 course but a par 4 iron course. You can loose a lot of balls on straight long drives so ball placement off tee is critical. Lots of ditches & ravines.
Good Value
Played this course several times since moving back to Bham. Not alot pf players when I 1st started going, but starting to see more players, which isnt a bad thing. Course should honestly get more traffic than it does. Staff is always super friendly and accommodating. This track is on the shorter side, but a little tight and curvy in the right spots to balance out the difficulty. No huge negatives that would stop me from going, but if I had to offer one area for improvement:
Bunker/Drainage Repair- Unfortunately the bunkers are pretty much washed out, and are often puddled. Same goes for a few of the fairways. Course appears to have issues draining properly. Cant play bunker shots and some landing zones on the fairways are off limits due to standing water.
CONSTRUCTIVE criticism truly. You shouldnt have reservations about playing this track. Muni prices on this part of town is unheard of.
This course is tight
Absolutely gorgeous. A well thought out track that winds through the Heatherwood housing development.
Rolling hills and bunkers make this a target golf course. No forgiveness off the fairway, many falloffs making lost balls common.
The greens are perfect and a handy short game needed to make your putts easier.
A confluence of skills are needs to negotiate this layout. Narrow shutes make the tee shot a bit scary.
I will play here every time I can. A great tour with great opportunity and disappointment.
Great course, the grill was just closed!
The staff was awesome. I just wish the grill was open.
Great Course
Absolutely great course. I play it a few times a week and it’s always amazing. Recently the fairways were cut short in some spots. Also some players do not abide by standard pace of play rules by letting smaller faster groups play through and there is no course Marshall to enforce this. Other than that it’s amazing course and plays very well. Absolutely love it
who knew?
who knew that they can design a course where every hole requires you to hit uphill? oh yes, except for #1 when halfway thru the hole you hit across a 100 yard ravine. and # ?? when you hit downhill to the left on a narrow fairway with a roll downhill of at least 100 yares. Or, you miss and your ball goes into never-neverland ravine.
Most interesting. One of my worst scores this year, but fun.
Worst Bunkers EVER!
I paid the full nine hole rate for my daughter and myself (with small range bag, $59). After checking in, we went to the range and probably hit three or four balls each when the sprinklers came on!! The clubhouse employee came out and apologized, said, “Oh I thought you had enough time before those came on.” No offer to turn them off, no offer for discount, even refund of range balls, just “Well, I guess y’all can go roll a few putts.”
So we rolled a few putts. Then we teed off. Fortunately we stayed out of bunkers - the WORST I’ve ever seen. Practically no sand in there, just dried up mud holes.
The course has some great views and lots of character. From anything but the forward tees, you’d better hit straight - very narrow. Greens rolled very nicely, but many off leave no room for error on the approach shots, short, long, or laterally.
It’s really sad - so much natural beauty, character and potential, but unless they start to maintain it, I don’t know why anyone should want to play it.
Fabulous
We just loved playing here. Great course and fantastic staff. Do play this course.
Solid value
Narrow fairways create a challenging layout for a rather short course. .No waiting on Monday morning. Greens were in great shape. I enjoyed the round and will return.
Flipped the nines since I was here last. It’s definitely a tougher start to the round now, in my opinion.
Greens were top-dressed with sand, but rolled well. Faster than they looked.
Fairways were excellent.
3 constructive criticisms:
1. Bunkers are terrible. They must address this and put sand in them because 95% of the bunkers are unplayable as is. This is really a shame because the complex bunkering, particularly around the 6th, 13th, 15th and 18th holes, are a hallmark feature of the course’s architecture.
2. The course advertises a $1,000 hole-in-one contest on the 7th hole that your greens fee enters you in. You can pay a few extra bucks to increase the payout if it hits. However, when you look at the receipt, it has a charge for the greens fee and a $1 charge for the hole-in-one contest. While I think this is a creative way to generate much-needed revenue to hopefully improve the course conditions (see bunkers above), it is a little misleading.
3. The practice range is a bit inadequate. It measures only about 180 yards in length and they don’t let you hit driver. On second thought, I should correct myself to just 2 1/2 constructive criticisms, because honestly a smarter, better player won’t reach for the driver much, if at all. Tight fairways and preferred landing areas call for long irons off the tee.
In conclusion, you will likely either love or hate this course. Not much in between. And bring plenty of balls
For the money, not bad.
I wouldn’t pay more than about $40 for this course. In pretty decent shape now since
Opening last year. The layout is rough and narrow but still a lot of fun. Great addition to have a public course in the middle
Of Birmingham.
Interesting Track
First time playing this course, and I have seen pictures of the place while it was closed and understand the effort that was made to make this course playable again. Overall they've done a great job. The clubhouse appears to have been renovated and looks great. The pro shop is pretty bare. It felt odd to have such a nice sized pro shop with nothing in it when you first walk in. Pro shop attendant was very nice.
I'm indifferent on the course layout. Some holes are really cool and can be played many ways, then some holes are serious head scratchers. It's short, but if you miss a fairway or a green there's a good chance you won't find your ball so you definitely have to make adjustments, one being leave the driver at home. I'd recommend this course because of the value and it wasn't too crowded. Greens are great and roll well, much better than I was expecting. The bunkers were bad, most bunkers contain sandy based clay with rocks in them. Once that's addressed this will be one of the best value courses in the area.
Seeing Improvement
The course is showing the work that is being put in. Trees are being cleared where they can. Greens were in really good shape. Tight golf course but a value if you want to truly work on your game.
