Sweet place!
Fast smooth greens. Great staff. Dang sure worth the drive. Need to be able to work the ball left and right
Open Layout with Nice Greens
Tee boxes were nice with minor level issues. Fairways were in great shape. The fringe is cut tight and crisp around the greens. All the greens on the course were in phenomenal shape and rolled true. This course is FLAT, easy to play if you plot your next shot correctly.
The Refuge for a First Timer
This was a really nice course overall. Even with all the rain in the area we’ve had recently the course was pretty dried out. The greens were in good shape, albeit maybe a little over manicured and this made them fast.
The only downside I’d give this course is the amount of water they built into it. As someone just really getting their golf game to a sustainable level of play, I have the natural aversion to water. There are plenty of places on the fairways where it gets pretty tight and the water poses a real issue. Myself and several of the guys around me lost more than one ball to these water traps.
Overall this course was nice for the money and the location. I enjoyed the modern feel and the majority of the layouts are fun to play and good to get aggressive on. If you’re someone that doesn’t have good control off the tee box just beware the water.
A big upgrade from yiur typical muni
When I read muni in any description, my mind goes to crusty greens, bad lies, and mediocre conditions. The Refuge does not have any of those conditions. It is well maintained, good rolling greens, and well maintained conditions throughout the course.
Many of the holes are straightforward... no real trips. Several of the par 4s are less than 325y from the number II tees. Some fairway bunkers and very few greenside bunkers. However, most of the greens are raised so a run up shot is generally out of the question. This is the typical place where a small errant shot to the green will cause you trouble as it runs away downhill making for a tougher recovery. Plus the typical southern Bermuda rough will hide a ball you know is "right there". I lost 5 balls in the fairway or greenside rough simply because I could not find them.
Water can be found on several holes but it will sneak up on you as they are not as easy to see from the tee box. A good example is the par 5, 9th hole. Water on the right will find a water hazard on the second shot if you are not mindful. On-board GPS helps a lot on this course.
If I lived in the area, this would definitely be a course to play several times each year and I'm sure the more you play it, the more you learn the nuances needed to score a good round.
Outstanding Course Even In Wet Weather
I had business in Jackson but had time for two rounds of golf. Although it was very rainy and the course was water logged; it is an incredible track. The greens are well maintained and the fairways were wet but playable. The rough! Well the rough is rough, deep and hard to manage. The wet weather over the past few weeks prevented mowing so it was easy to loose balls if they were not in the fairway. All in all I had a great time and will most definitely be back to the refuge.
Nice course
Because of the hot weather we stopped at hole 13.
The course is really nice, wel maintained and in perfect condition. The temperature was our problem…
Good Course In Jackson
Enjoyed our round on a well maintained and fun course to play. Pace of play was excellent as we played on Memorial Day, and were able to finish in 4 hours. Greens, fairways and tee boxes were all in good condition, however the greens rolled slower than expected considering how well the course was looked after. This is a good value for the money to play and I would recommend this course as the one to play while in the Jackson area. The only negative was I was surprised to be charged 50 cents for a cup of ice, and $3 to fill a cooler of ice if I did not buy drinks from the bar. 1st time for everything I guess.
Nice course
Good course for low handicap or scratch golfers. A bit challenging for mid to high handicap. Lost a few balls inside the treeline but course was in great condition
Great course
The course is very playable for all levels of players. Only a couple of quirky holes but for the most part “what you see in front of you is what you get.”
Challenging round
Wet conditions required cart path only. It’s the kind of course you should play with someone who knows it or play it multiple times. Too many surprises.
Jackson Track
Probably the nicest public course in the Jackson MS area. Very nice conditions in a great setting. Played over the Memorial Day longweekend in 4 hours-excellent! Hiwever, was charged 50 cents for a cup of ice, and $3 for ice for the cooler. That was weird and unexpected. Will play again. As it attached to a hotel and next to the airport, would be a great fly-in/out long weekend trip.
