The Lakes Country Club
About
The Lakes Country Club sprawls across acres of lush North Carolina countryside, offering a glimpse of the wildlife and vegetation that is unique to Boiling Springs Lakes. Being the oldest golf course in Brunswick County, it has become a local favorite over the years. The course is a manageable 6,700 yards from the tips, making it approachable enough for less experienced players. While it is not the most formidable challenge it is enjoyable for a range of skill levels. As the golf course's name would imply, there are numerous lakes that come into play often, especially on the front nine. There are also strategically placed bunkers throughout. The Lakes C.C. is popular for being not only a player-friendly, well maintained golf course but also being one of the best values in the area.

The greens were inconsistent. Pin placement was very interesting. Some fairways had little to no grass in some areas.
Fairways were in rough shape.
This could be a gem but the fact that the fairways were not cut made it difficult to enjoy. Burnt out fairways, greens were long, slow and did not hold shots with spin.
Course value for the money
Greens, fairways, and tee boxes were in great shape for the cost of the course. For those who say it’s in bad conditions you can’t compare this to a $200 green fee course. For $39 I’d play this course over and over for practice.
Good value
When I visit family in the area I play the Lakes. It's close, the price is right, and the staff are great. They are very accommodating in getting me out as a single. A few holes have some beat up tee boxes and fairways but for the most part the course is worth what you pay. Are there nicer courses around? Sure, but for me the available tee times and price work out in my favor. See you next time Lakes.
Is this a golf course?
Ugh. What a waste of an afternoon. Not an inspired layout, but that could have been overlooked if the course was in good condition. It wasn’t. Fairways have lots of crabgrass and greens were bumpy and in need of a cutting. Actually, it was difficult to determine if you are in the fairway as no real discernible cut. Bunkers were in need of raking.
Course conditions fair, pace slow
While the course conditions were only fair, for the price they were acceptable. Unfortunately it was very hot and humid and there is no water on the course and no beverage cart. There was also no signage before the round saying to make sure you stock up on liquids.
That plus the very slow pace of play were negatives.
very nice and beautiful course
this course was very nice and played fairly hard. the fairways were nicely groomed and the greens were nice and challenging. i played the tips and it played about 6700 yards and was a bunch of fun. the layout of the course was nice and i liked how it was kinda in the middle of no where and was peaceful. i shot 80 and for playing that course for the 1st time ill take it. i would highly record this course to anyone
Very nice, pretty view, very solid course
I played on New Years and the course was in very good conditions. I would highly recommend this course to anyone. It's in a quiet very relaxing location w a gorgeous view from the club house. I shot 80 and I'm a 7 handicap and for playing this course for the 1st time that's pretty solid. I loved how the small greens gave me a challenge and they rolled very nicely. I honestly don't understand how people can have negative views on this course because it's just a southern beautiful course. Would highly recommend to anyone
Rock Hard Fairways - No Grass
Where do I start? Let's start with the rock hard fairways where you can't tell where the fairways end and the hardpan with roots begin. The greens are not receptive and slow. It should be "Once in a Lifetime Experience", at best.
You Get What You Pay For
Visited Oak Island/ SouthPort as i do 3-4 times a year. Thought i would avoid paying the 70-80 dollar fees at Oak Island CC or St. James. Found this course online and it was cheap so gave it a try. Friendly Staff. Only about 3 other players there on a sunday morning at 8 ? Odd. But the fairways are no different than the rough. Some fairways are basically hazards. Greens were all right, but overall a course in very bad condition.
would not recommend going to the lakes. Spend the extra money to go to a nicer course in the area.
I am the owner/manager here at The Lakes. I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your round here! I completely understand your dissatisfaction when you compare my course with a course like St. James. However to compare a 70-80 dollar course to a $33 course is like comparing a hamburger and fries with a steak and potato. We work extremely hard to provide the best conditions possible with the amount of revenue we generate. During the weeks preceding the day you posted that you were here, we had a tremendous amount of rain. This naturally made a few of the fairways “like hazards” and made it impossible to perform the routine maintenance. When writing negative reviews, please keep in mind that people read them and make their decisions based on them. Potentially hundreds of people could decide to patronize a business or not, based on what you write. Therefore, you hold the survival of a small business owner (and all of their employees) in your hands. Please compare apple to apples and consider things that could have affected the current situation? Thank you
