After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
A nice course
The course is nice, starts fairly flat then hilly on the last four. It is not an easy walking course due to distance between some holes .
Good golf course with easy reach of Manhattan
There aren't too many golf courses within 30m of Midtown, this one is. It is a well maintained public course, the tee boxes and fairways are good, but the greens are hard and won't hold the ball. Enjoyed the round. Car Parking is $3, to be paid in cash.
Old Vanny
This is my home course, so I am trying not to be too bias. I booked an afternoon tee time, and the pace of play was under 4 hours. The pace of play on the weekend is at least 4-1/2 to 5 hours. There have been times where I just only play 14 holes because of it. This is the main reason I rather play during the week. The course has improved overall compared to last year. The tee boxes are in much better shape compared to years past. Walking the course is difficult because of the long walks between several holes. The food on the cost is average but better than some of the other public course in the city. the clubhouse Burger is awesome. They have an average bar and staff is friendly and accommodating. There's also plenty of available parking for free and for a fee. You have several nice restaurants nearby and I recommend Rick's Steakhouse on Broadway. Outside of the pothole all over the cart path it's a decent course. I give 3-3.5 stars, which is average for a public course.
Charming Course
I really like the old charm and layout of this course.
Great course
I’ve played this course many times. It’s a great looking course and good pace as well. I’m never waiting more then 2 mins at a home if I ever do have to wait.
1st round at Van NY
Great course, beautiful layout and excellent location. Friendly staff and service.
Only issue was the sprinklers coming at 730 am on the greens while we were playing. Completely destroyed 2-3 holes and took away the good feeling.
Rest all good
Never Again
No carts when arrived, and 3 groups on the tee at the firsg hole. Jammed packed.
Horrible Golf Courses
One of the worst golf courses I’ve ever played at, never coming back here. The course managers were very rude to our entire party and the pace of play was terrible. The tee boxes might have been the hardest ground I’ve ever felt. Terrible conditions for the price we paid. Overall, one of the worst experiences we had golfing.
Crowded and rushed
The ground at the tee was hard and difficult to put tees in the ground. The cart paths were rough and uneven.
I'm new to golf and felt completely rushed the entire time I was out on the course. The Marshall came around to scream at me for letting another group pass me, and he immediately felt bad when I told him it was my third time ever golfing. Regardless, my first two rounds at other courses didn't feel rushed like this. I don't think I'll be coming back.
Old VCGC Needs a Facelift
This is my local course and I frequently play here during the week. The pace of play can vary from time to time and it's possible to finish your round in under 4 hours. This is not happening on the weekends. Expect a 5 hour round.
The course layout is easy but if you want to walk be prepared for a long walk. The first tee is 1/4 mile or more from the clubhouse. You will have another long walk from hole 2-3, 7-8 and 13-14. Your longest walk will be from 14-15 and 18-clubhouse. The last four holes are very hilly but fun to play.
Overall I like the course because it close to home and they have really juicy burgers. What the course is in need of is some serious repair to the cart paths as they are riddled with potholes. The course maintenance staff has been improving the greens and tee boxes over the years.
After you finish your round you should consider Jakes Steak House located on Broadway near Manhattan College Avenue.
What a difference
I have been playing vanny for many years now because it is a local course for me. I have seen this course at its worst and all I can say now is WOW I don’t remember when the course has looked this nice. They redid the first tee box that was in dire need to get fix, and there is actually grass on all the other tees. I am in complete shock. The bunkers are being cleaned out and reshaped.oh and one more thing for once the greens look and are rolling like they have never before. I was told there is a new superintendent who took over last year and you can totally see the changes being made. I am totally impressed and can’t wait to see what the 2023 golf season has in store for Vanny!! Hats off to the superintendent and his crew they are doing an outstanding job!
