A fine homecoming

Around Thirty years ago as a young ten year old, I got bored of tennis and asked my dad whether I could give golf a go.

I took a clinic here with a friend from primary school and ended up playing my first round of golf ever here.

What I remember was a fairly rough golf course. Muddy fairways in winter, and common old suburban park grass used on the fairways. A bland and flat layout.

Today I played my first round here in 20 or so years and was pleasantly surprised by the improvements made to what we jokingly called “Royal Glen Waverley” back in the day.

Fairways have been relayed and were in prime condition. Didn’t get a bad lie. I’ve played on private courses all over the world and these were Just as good a fairway as I’ve played on.

There have also been some bunkers added around the greens to add some complexity to the layout. Greens are the usual slower public course style but are fairly smooth and well kept. No issues. Bunkers are nicely filled with sand.

They are redoing the 5th and the 11th green. I look forward to what the changes look like.

As an actual course, while short the course does demand absolute accuracy off the tee. The bouncy fairways are very tight and other than 1-2 holes a long iron off the tee is probably the order of the day. The trees have matured since I last played and you’re pretty much chipping out if you miss the fairway. If you do decide to use a 3 wood or driver you’ll need to shape the ball around corners otherwise you will run out of fairway.

Other amenities are the big practice putting green, and driving range (shorter irons only).
