A fine example of a Melbourne "Sandbelt" course

Having just played down the road at Royal Melbourne, another opportunity to play on Melbourne's sandbelt came up a few weeks later.

Southern has always been a highly regarded track - if a little unknown outside of Melbourne. It has been a while since I'd played here, but managed to get in at 1pm at the back end of the members competition. True to form it had been raining in Melbourne so conditions were a little greasy under foot.

While Royal Melbourne can be very wide off the tee, I would say that Southern requires you to be precise with your driver or 3 wood - missing the fairway is fairly penal, and water does come into play in some places. If you can make it onto the fairway you will be well pleased with your lie in the plush green fairways.

While the sand in the bunkers seems a little off, greens were in excellent condition and exhibit extremely true roll. Great to putt on.

My favourite hole was the par 5 4th. Wideish off the tee and layup left of the guarded green is the right way to play this hole.

Enormous bar and club house area. Solid practice facility as well.
