Would play again

Enjoyable day at St.David’s and would recommend to others. After somewhat unwelcoming reception from assistant pro, very friendly member set me right on course and restrictions on the day. I thought course layout was a good balance of difficulty but playability if you hit the right shots. While rough was penal in areas, fairways were generous enough. Winter maintenance did affect the quality of the greens, but price was reduced so no complaints. Clubhouse was assessable and enjoyed nice meal afterwards. Coming from Scotland I’ve played a few decent courses in my time and St. David’s can hold it’s own. Might think twice at full rate though.

Under the castle

After feeling very underwhelmed pulling into the car park the day certainly got a lot better out on the course, club house and pro shop aren’t much to write home about but the friendliness of the staff more than makes up for it. As for the course itself it’s good not great, greens are lightening though and fairways are well cut and tidy. Many holes play out under the gaze of Harlech castle with great views of the surrounding area. All in all good value for money for a day by the sea.

A top 5 course

I have been lucky enough to play a number of the top courses in the UK sand Europe and this is right up there.
The course even in perfect conditions is tough but what a place to peg it up at!! The world heritage Harlech castle overlooks the whole course and it is framed by the dunes of Harlech beech and the stunning view of Snowdon.
The course is no that busy and I skipped around in less than 3 hours on my own.
The course is a beauty, tight with long rough but rewards accuracy. The par 4’s make this which are some of the most imaginative and challenging that you will find anywhere.
My tip is don’t worry about your score and drink the course in, it is really a wonderful golfing experience to be enjoyed. The staff are welcoming and friendly and there is excellent practice facilities to warm up with( trust me you need them) at £54 this is the best value course I have ever played. If you are on holiday within a 40 mile radius of this place boom a tee time trust me it’s worth it.

Beautiful Course but stay out the rough!

Stunning golf course with a beautiful backdrop of Harlech Castle and on a clear day you can see Snowdon in the distance. Weather was perfect but you have to taylor your shots to what the wind dictates otherwise you’ll be playing out of very thick rough. Any poor tee shot will be punished… If you don’t find your ball within a minute just give up and take a drop because that stuff is proper rough! The tee boxes, fairways and greens are stunning and really reward a good shot. Having now played my first round here I would definitely play here again and be a lot more confident on where to place my shots. Good good course management is the key to a low score!

Joy by the Sea

A links course that plays more like a Arkham’s course without trees. Greens are huge and fantastic condition fairways are also great. Some of the tee boxes are very interesting elevated and tricky. Rough can be penal. I am an intermediate golfer and it was very enjoyable. The blind 14th is if particukar interest and a couple of holes play like they are right off the bat

Wales' other Championship Layout

Royal St. David's is another championship course in Wales. Everything is in front of you on all holes except one; although on that one, you can still see the flagstick (the par 3 14th). It is about 6600 yards, but at a par 69 it would still challenge the best golfers; especially if the wind is up a bit.
The setting is quite spectacular as you are underneath Harlech Castle, playing by and then through duneland and to the north is the lovely Snowdonia National Park. If aesthetics matter to you, then this place will do just fine.
The golf itself is quality. The routing will have you face the wind in all directions. The fairways are the rumbling linksland that offer all kinds of lies to challenge and bring joy to the round. The final holes through the duneland are spectacular (14-17). The first 13 holes are all true links. It ends with a par 3 to the clubhouse.
Off the course, they have everything you need for a good day at a club. Food is good, staff is quite friendly as are the members, driving range and putting green for warm-up.
If in Wales, this would be a must play; especially if you enjoy Porthcawl. Not quite Porthcawl, but It is under $100 in the summer and less in shoulder season so it is quite a good value. I wonder why you don't really hear more about Wales as a travel destination; the golf is very good, the country is beautiful.

One of the best in Wales

Played 72 holes in Wales during the trip, and only 6 holes were played in rain, but it was the first 6 at Royal St. David's. Sideways. The locals had no use for the day, but us four Americans stood up to the task.

The course would be tough in perfect conditions so you can imagine what the wet, windy start was like. But it was a true, beautiful links test with some truly great holes.

The par 3s were particularly memorable, especially the closing 18th hole, which my partner birdied.

I'd love another crack at it in perfect conditions. Still, the rain didn't dampen my affinity for it.

Wet weather
Walked

Long, tough course -- especially in bad weather!

Let’s just get this out of the way: For the first six holes, we played in an absolute downpour. We’re talking sheets of rain here. Not another soul on the course. By the time we reached the seventh tee, though, the rain had turned into a light drizzle, and it didn’t really bother us for the rest of the day. Good thing, because Royal St. David’s turned out to be spectacular.

It’s plenty tough as a par 74, and we were playing the only tees available to us at 6,600 yards. Maybe it was an opposite wind direction that day, but there were four par 4s that I couldn’t reach in two shots, and I’m not a short hitter by any means (270-yard average when I find the center of the clubface, which these days is pretty seldom). Nevertheless, the highlight of the course is the final five holes, which loop through dunes and feature a couple of blind shots (the 221-yard 14th is particularly interesting). The course ends on a par 3, which is unique, but it’s no doubt one of the best courses in Wales.
