very prettywell maintained
starter very nice
front desk person not very friendly
fun course to play
like an easier Black at Bethpage
'tall grass" but not as deep as black course
little of trip but definitely worthy of trip on occasions
Very nice layout,
Course was in great shape but took 5 hours to play on a Saturday. There were no rangers pushing any of the groups, which is never a good sign.
Rainy day
First of all this course is normally in good condition. Went on a rainy day after I bought a tee time with a cart included. Got to the course and was told that no carts were allowed by an extremely unfriendly pro shop attendant. Since it was a cheap round I decided to play. The course was one big swamp. Pins on half the holes were out and laying on the green. After nine holes I came back to the clubhouse to see two golfers going out in a cart. If the attendant had just told me about the course conditions I wouldn't have had a problem. Unfriendly, non-informative employee made this experience worse than anything else.
Tall Grass
A very solid layout with open quality. The tall grass was not up yet, making the course play easier than normal. The greens are starting to roll true after the rough winter. Windy afternoon added to difficulty, but this course allows you to score if you avoid the perimeters.
Excellent course. Room for error.
Great course to play. Lots of room for error for the non pro. Would definitely play again.
Bring your game
Yardage knowledge is critical here. This isnt the course for novices who are looking for laughs. It will test your game in every way.
Great day
Although the weather was windy about 35 miles and hour it was a fun experience and staff was lovely . I am sure when the tall grass is in the course will look spectacular but amazing day out..
Don't play in 20 mph winds!
This course is wide open in the spring because the feschew has been cut down. With that said, if it is windy you had better be able to keep your ball down! With that said, it is a great challenge for anyone daring enough to accept it!
Watch the hidden hazards
Tallgrass is a great course. The prevailing winds made it tougher since it was a pine barrens style course. Very enjoyable and good value for the money. Nice to play a varsity course vs a jv sized property.
Carts Stopped Working
Had a 2:40 tee time and one of the electric carts died on the 8th hole. We called the "Tallgrass Help" number on the inside of the cart and someone brought out a new cart for us and explained that they were busy all day so the carts battery was drained. Really wasn't a big deal to us, not a problem. We understood that these things happen. Then the replacement cart they brought out died on the 12th hole. We tried calling the help line again but this time no one answered. So for the remainder of the round we had the other cart drive behind us and push us along. Then on 16 the other cart died so we walked the rest of 16, 17 and 18. Now we are young guys so walking wasn't terrible, although we did walk Bethpage Black in the morning and were looking forward to using carts for our afternoon round. It is absolutely inexcusable to not have enough carts for paying customers, especially on a holiday weekend. They said they were very busy but there wasn't a single group in front of or behind us the entire time. When we finished, there wasn't a single person around in the pro shop or cleaning out carts to talk to. We paid for a cart for 18 holes not 15 and a half so if this course was managed respectably, they would reimburse us the cart fee. I will follow up with another review if they do end up reimbursing us but as of now they haven't. I wouldn't recommend this course because they obviously do not have a good management team and they do not care about pleasing their customers.
Good Lynx style
Last time I played it, it was very windy and grass was very difficult get out. But, It was not much windy and it was about 70 degree beautiful day yesterday. Notorious tall grass was not tall enough yet, so it was actually easy to play. Overall I enjoyed it very much.
Great Links style golf
My friends and I had a wonderful time at Tallgrass. Great value for the money and a links style course not often found in this part of the country. Glad I found this gem on GolfNow. Will definitely return.
beautiful layout
loved this course. deep pothole traps in places you wouldn't expect. challenging greens and lots of tallgrass
Like a private club!!
No one on the course!!!! pace was great !!!! Greens were Fast!!!!!
great course layout, nice fairways. greens were like putting on glass but were true. Had a good round.
Very nice course. People working there were great!!!
Lightning fast greens
This course is very challenging. Not so much getting to the greens but once on the greens it is very difficult to get the ball in the cup. There are no gimmes on this course. If you want the feel of a U.S. Open then this is the course for you. You must also keep it in the fairway. The course certainly lives up to its name "Tall Grass". . I lost a few balls in the tall grass.
Staff is friendly and welcoming. I'll certainly be a repeat customer
For all the boasting the course actually wasn't in great shape.
Course definitely had some problem areas. Wasn't pristine like as golf magazine and others had exclaimed. Staff was quite young and not the friendliest.
Great conditioning, fast greens, nice views.
This course is not long, but the wind and the fescue rough and the speed of the greens makes it a legit challenge. Most of the holes present choices on how to play them, and especially the shorter par 4s. There are some blind shots that you need to ride up the fairway to see before hitting. The car ride is one hour from the Queens-Nassau border, so you can have a true LI East End experience without too long of a ride.
This course was in better shape than some country clubs i have played and very challenging from the blues. the gresns were super fast.
Fast Greens , Great staff, Challenging aTall Grass, IF you hit it in there you will never find it.
great conditions, excellent greens
Been playing Tallgrass since it opened in Late '90's. Over the last few years the conditions had deteriorated, sparse areas in fairways, grass growing in bunkers, etc. But this year the course conditions have been improved dramatically, probably better than ever! Back on my must play list!
Just heard from the Head Pro at Tallgrass and after seeing this review, he apologized and offered to give us a discount the next time we go to play there. He also said they are working on the cart situation and it will be better soon. Good to see that they do care about their customers and are willing to reach out and make things right when customers aren't happy. Thanks Larry!
