Wow.
Nice surprise! Excellent course from start to finish.
Super course
We had a fantastic time playing this course! The pro shop staff and Lacy, the bartender in the clubhouse, were very friendly. The course was in great shape for this time of year. We can’t wait to play it again.
The Bedford Springs resort is home to one of the oldest golf courses in America, laid out in 1895 by Spencer Oldham. In 1912, the Old Course was changed from an 18-hole layout to a 9-hole track by A.W. Tillinghast. In 1923, Donald Ross put his hands on it. And this is why I came: to play an architectural gem. These classic elements are just not found in a public setting very often, and emphasize strategy over length.
Take the par-3 fourth hole for example: playing more than 200 yards from all but the forward tees, this is the first of six Ross holes still intact in the current layout. Two-hundred-plus yards would be demanding alone, but you hit to a steep “volcano” green that is narrow, has two-tiers and falls off on every side. And then there is the bunker some 20 feet below the putting surface short and right...
The greens are generally small and have a lot of movement in them, though I didn’t find them recklessly quick.
The course has some subtle elevation change, but plays mostly in a valley through sycamores, oaks, maples and hickories. I think it is walkable if you choose to do so.
The conditioning of the course was impeccable, particularly for the first week in December. Everything was lush and green. The fairways were superb, and though the greens were recovering from aerification and tee boxes were top-dressed with sand, it did not affect the enjoyment of play.
My favorite holes were the opener, a short par-4 to ease you in; the par-5 fifth; the 11th which requires a blind tee shot (one of several); the par-3 14th; and the par-4 15th which offers options off the tee and plays shorter than it looks. The finishing stretch of 14-18 was formidable and really showed off the course’s architectural smorgasbord.
The pro shop is stocked with high-end options and the practice facility and staff were outstanding. Also a bonus nod for offering a course guide - a rarity seemingly in these days of GPS and apps. Bravo.
Great Deal
Played on a Hot Deal. Course was in outstanding shape and very picturesque. Everyone their couldn’t have been any nicer. Had a great time!
Always a treat!
Course was wet but always beautiful, meticulously kept and challenging. A favorite! Off course amenities are 5 star, gorgeous!
Nice course but it was wet
Conditions weren't the greatest...the course was very wet and played long. We thought it was expensive
Omni Bedford Springs Old Course
This course was amazing. I got to play it with my son as it was halfway between Pittsburgh and D.C. so we met there on a beautiful sunny morning. Upon arrival, we were met by the very friendly staff who got us set up and ready to play. We were about an hour early so went to the driving range and short game practice area. These were both excellent and provided a great opportunity to warm up. No problem getting out a little early and we were never held up or pushed the whole day. The course conditions were amazing and it was one of the nicest courses we have ever played. The layout is very interesting and with the number of tees available, challenging for all levels of player. I would highly recommend this course for anyone looking for a beautiful, exceptionally taken care of golf course.
Amazing Expirience
Probably my favorite course I have played in recent years. The conditions were immaculate and the course layout was as you would suspect of a Donald Ross/AW Tillinghast design. Cannot recommend this course enough
Plush Old Style Course
Played Bedford Springs after a day and a half of rain. It was wet and cart path only but was in really nice shape for this time of year. Greens were punched a few weeks ago but healed nicely and rolled true. Got a Great deal thru GolfNow so that made the round even better. Look forward to playing again.
Very nice course
Our foursome really enjoyed our round. Usually when we play this course it’s in a tournament as a scramble. It was a lot of fun to play our own ball this time. The course was in beautiful shape. The greens had been punched, filled and rolled and putted pretty true.
We hope to be back and play it again soon.
Great condition at 40F below.
Staff is very friendly. I forgot a hybrid in hole #6 Blue tee and was brought back in 10mins.
Must Play Penna Course
Eventhough the rains came Sat night and the course should have been closed it was a great day at the Old Course. CPO did not effect pace of play as we finished in 4.5 hrs. Fairways and greens were soft but in perfect condition. Course played very long due to wet conditions over last few week. Still worth the experience.
Galoshes needed
This is a beautiful golf cours that has nice plush fairways, manicured sand traps, and fast greens. It is a great course that is very challenging to score. The day I played the skies were clear and the weather was great! The biggest problem with this course is that it is in a valley with a stream running through the entire course. When it rains thier is no where for the water to drain to because the streams are full from the surrounding mts. The fairways were extremely wet and it was cart path only. It was a lot of walking and a lot of plugged balls. It’s not worth the money if the course is wet and you have to walk.
Great Day On Historic Course But Expected A Little More
Yesterday I played this historic course on a picture-perfect day. The course was soggy from heavy rains two days earlier; so, it was cart path only. I was impressed the soggy conditions didn't keep the ground crew from maintaining the fairways and greens in beautiful aesthetic shape. Of course, we didn't get much (if any) roll on the fairways, but the greens were receptive.
Most golfers will enjoy this resort course. Pace of play is OK. Our foursome completed the round in 4 hours 35 minutes; not a bad time for cart path only. Best of all, we never pushed the foursome ahead of us or delayed the foursome behind us.
Fairways are generous. the length is manageable assuming one plays from the appropriate tees, and there are risk/reward choices to be made. Greens are challenging to say the least. Lots of slope, subtle undulation, and grain issues.
I was a little disappointed with the architecture. I expected some memorable holes, and there really aren't many. For me, only #17 stands out; it's a relatively long par three with a long, narrow green. There's a deep bunker to the left and a hill on the right. A truly scary hole.
The Best Course In PA, Period
The layout in downright challenging for all skill sets. It is next to one amazing hotel which you see from the distance amongst the Mountain View. Tee box’s are perfect, green Roll at least 11-12 range all year round, fairways and bunkers are perfect. This course you will never forget playing.
