Disorganized and slow

No marshall's enforcing pace, multiple dirt fairways, recommend showing up an hour before your tee time if you want to practice as they are starting groups 20-30 minutes before their tee time and filling spots with singles. no restrooms, water, snack bar with covid... just a beat up track with a lot of people on it. Plan for a 5 hour plus day.

consistently good

I played Mile Square Classic twice last week. On Monday, our foursome finished in 3.75 hours and on Friday we finished in 4 hours.
Considering that the course is a public course that gets lots of play, the course was in remarkably good condition.
Seniors get a special rate Mon - Thurs.
Mile Square has a good practice facility, but the practice greens are not available unless you have a tee time that day.
I recommend that you try Mile Square Classic.

Walked

Players

Walked the LDP Tees (6334/70.5/122) in slightly less than 5H mid day for $55. Played here for a GK Cup match, thanks to Eric, John and Dave for a very enjoyable afternoon. Weather was great, in the 70's, sunny and fairly calm.

Last played here 5 1/2 years ago, remembered most holes when I saw them. Flat, not alot of trouble other than trees and some lakes. Fun layout even if not overly memorable.

Tees were not good. Many had bare areas that were being repaired with sand/seed.

Fairways mediocre. There were many areas that should have been marked GUR. Okay coverage with some bare areas, but the bare areas were frequently in the middle of the fairway. Also being repaired with sand/seed.

Rough had decent coverage. Kikuyu, not tall, but it was still tough for me to get the good part of the club on the ball.

Traps were being worked on as we played. The two I was in were both pretty good, very well maintained in the w/o rake era. Maybe could use more sand, but better than average.

Greens I thought putted well. Medium speed, but you had to be careful on downhillers. Decent amount of ball marks, they were soft enough to hold irons well.

Customer service was good. No on course services, but they had an open restaurant and an open snack stand at the turn. Course is marked old school, 200/150/100 markers. $55 is too much even on the weekend for the shape this course was in, but it's the O.C. Rough around the edges, but very playable. Recommended with that in mind.

Covid-19 Round

First time playing here in over a year within the covid-19 pandemic. The booking software was different to accommodate prepaid tee times at walker rates. I'm a walker, so I was able to simply head up to the tee box straight from my car., when I arrived for my 11am tee time. If you need a cart, simply head into the pro shop to purchase a cart. Right now, only single rider carts and carts seem to be limited. I would encourage you to walk.

The pace of play is 4 hours, thx to the pandemic...course is in great shape and greens are rolling just fine.

All practice greens and sand/pitching areas are closed. Range is open with social distancing in place.

Staff was friendly and I felt safe on this course during my round. Outside dining looked like it was open for business and the snack bar was open too, but I've been bringing all my own snacks and drinks. No trash cans on the course so please refrain from littering and take your trash home with you.

Masks required. Please wear them.

Solid

This course was a pleasant surprise. Located in the middle of Mile Square park, it doesn't feel like you're in Fountain Valley. There is so much land on this course and plenty of long holes for you to break out the driver. It is a difficult course, especially if you're unfamiliar with the layout.

Pace of play was good. Even though we were behind a five-some, there were no long waits at any holes. Fairways were in great condition and the greens were great. Lots of water on this course, so you may want to bring an extra set of golf balls.

Fairways and Greens

The fairways were like a carpet. Recent rains had them looking their best ever. Greens were tucked behind traps but approachable if your balls were in the right side of the fairways. I had my best round of golf that day.

Good value playing this course

I play the Mile Square Classic course or the Mile Square Players course 15 - 20 times per year. I prefer playing during the week because I can play in less than 4 hours and Mile Square has a senior players card that gives seniors (65+) a round of golf including a cart for $40.

The tee boxes and fairways are always in good shape and, for a public course, the greens are very good.

Before or after your round I recommend eating at the restaurant. Food is excellent and fairly priced, and service is generally excellent.

Good course

Played on a Sunday
Zipped through the first 10 holes then things started slowing down
Fairly easy course, fairways are forgiving
Greens ran a little slow but in good condition
Couple of dry spots in the fairways but not an issue
Straight forward course and I would play here again

Most valuable course in orange county

Milesquare courses are my favorites local courses for walking. The courses are always well maintained, layouts are nicely for walking, and 6600+ ft length is a challenge for weekend golfers. Staffs are finely and you always see clear bucket of waters at the starting tee to wet your towels.

Save Your Time and Money

This review is for the Players Course. This was probably the worst experience I've had at a course in this price range. My buddies and I had a group of 5 and arrived on time ready to go. The scheduler working at the first tee made one of our guys drive all the way back to the pro shop because he didn't have a cart slip when the guy in the pro shop said he didn't need it. So instead of just using the walkie to contact the pro shop and verify that we are all paid for, he made him drive all the way back causing us to fall behind. On about hole 3, one marshall starts to stalk us in his cart. I kid you not, this Marshall followed our every move for the whole front 9 and into the back 9. Applying pressure and telling us to speed up the whole time, he would not leave us alone. Long story short, this guy would not get off our rears and eventually we spoke up and told him to back off. As a group of 5 we were playing this course at a 4 hr and 15 min pace (and not because of the marshalls pressure). Pretty darn good pace compared to most OC courses on a Saturday morning. That Marshall killed our vibe and made me feel rushed, which I hate when it comes to golf. Not to mention this course has no character. It's flat and bordered by trees with a few small lakes here and there. Nothing special at all. This course is not worth $65. I wouldn't even pay $35 with the layout and the way the marshalls treat you. Save yourself the money and play riverview or fullerton. They're way cheaper courses eith better layouts and the greens are just as good. I won't be back to this courses again and I live 5 mins away. Overrated.

While I agree that I have had marshals tail a group too closely and under improper circumstances as it seems here (due to the delayed start time)..., -no way a 5-some was playing at a 4:15 pace.
Comments are good, but their integrity should not be purposefully misstated.

Tees and fairways terrible. Greens OK.

Tees were all mostly lumpy, thin, upside-down saucer like, pretty bad. Fairways are patchy, uneven, scruffy and thin and bare in some spots. There is no rough. Obviously suffered from lack of water, the rains we had recently needs to happen a lot more. The greens are OK, nothing special. They felt firm, but the ball stuck OK and rolled just average. It's about as Muni as you would get, nothing special. You could pretty much spray it every which way and you'll be OK. I can't comment on bunkers as I didn't touch one. Reminded me of Chester Washington/ Santa Anita but flat, but not as interesting. Pretty similar type of course. The holes all look so similar you get bored after a while. Couldn't they design a few more dog-legs? Rio Hondo/Lakewood/El Dorado look similar but at least those places have some dog-legs and a bit more character. All of these courses need more maintenance to be great, but seeing as the rates are so low, take what you can. I wish there was more grass all over, especially the rough. At least they all try to make the greens acceptable. Good for walking.

Mile Square Classic

Walked the blues (6714/71.5/124) with Dconnally & Stickboy on their $23 twilight rate on a partly cloudy, breezy weekday afternoon. Flat course, very reasonable to walk, which I did for 36 holes today on the two Mile Square courses.

1st time playing here. The layout is traditional in nature and fairly wide open. A few lakes and trees to keep you honest, but the fairways are wide and the greens are large.

The tees were mediocre, probably the worst part of the course. Many were thin and chewed up.

The fairways were lush, almost TOO lush, if that is possible. The course played long because the fairways were thick and you got very little roll.

The rough was also lush and not overly penal, good coverage, some hardpan under and around some trees.

The sand traps I was in were excellent, well maintained with thick sand.

The greens putted OK, recovering nicely after aeration, but still not 100%. Medium speed and a little bumpy @ times. The green complexes are larger than average, so getting the ball on the correct section of the green (which I rarely managed to do) is essential to scoring well here. Better have your "A" lag putting game on this course!

No drink cart, but plenty of water stations. The gal that checked me in the afternoon in the Pro Shop was excellent, far different than my a.m. experience on the Players a few hours earlier.

Alot of fairly straight holes that are similar. I would not play here often, but it's a decent layout in very good condition overall. I would definitely play here again.

Love the Layout!

Players is one of my favorite layouts in LA area. Not a lot of trees, water is in play in some holes but not unfair, it can get long if the wind is blowing. Conditions are not what was in 2013. There is some weird grass growing on the 14th fairway.Tee to green was just not good, but I like the layout so much that I am giving it a 4 stars!
Pros - Nice and fair layout.
Cons- Conditions, Price ($70 to ride on saturday morning).
