Marathon Golf
Course needs TLC, understandable due to location & weather. It was pretty dry considering recent rains. It’s a 9 hole course played twice with red & yellow flags. Hole 9/18 was challenging but fun. Easy going atmosphere. Pro shop & Club rentals had great price. Thought golf was high considering the layout & course condition but thoroughly Enjoyed our time.
Horrible course
It is advertising as 18 holes, but it is only 9 hole! To be repeated. Fairway are mostly dirt. Greens are fine. Staff nice but not present. Sorry I went there and paid like a premier course!
Still a cow pasture
New owners said in Sept 2013 they were budgeting $200,000 per hole for renovations. May 1, 2014 was to start construction and to improve the golf course..."so by 2015 season the recreational facilities are in place while we build the hotel and cottages." This is the 2017 season and none of this has even been started. Greens are greatly improved, however starting to have issues once again.
Improving Every Day
Sombrero CC was purchased and made public as Florida Keys Country Club.. New greenskeeper and staff are doing a great job. It is a fairly easy track but has its nuances and some testy par 3's. The attitude of the staff is great - you can tell that there is something new going on here. Great food in the Harbor View Café as well.
Story of 2 courses
If you live in the FL Keys there aren't very many places to play. Sombrero Country Club is now FL Keys Country Club. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The cart guys will even clean you clubs at the end of your round. You don't see that much at the lower end courses. At $45 for twilight, which starts at 2 during daylight savings time and 1 during standard time is not too bad. The front 9 and the back 9 are two totally different courses. The front nine is really rough. Some fairways are in really bad shape. However, of the two the front nine is more challenging as there are quite a few water hazards which are usually hidden by hedges. Watch our for #7 as there is a water hazard not marked by a hedge between 200 and 250 yds from the tee box depending on which tee you play. There are 5 tees to play from. The one good thing about the front 9 is that the greens are in pretty decent shape. On the back 9 it's a whole different story. Fairways are in great shape. The holes are not very challenging and pretty straight forward. The greens are very well taken care of as well. I usually play on Saturday and I rarely have a problem walking on and the pace of play is excellent. I usually can finish a round of 18 in 2.5 hours. With very few options for golf in the Fl Keys, I do enjoy playing the FL Keys CC. It's no Doral but is a fun course and relatively inexpensive. Oh one last thing, watch out for the iguanas. They like to get in the way when you putt sometimes.
TERRIBLE
They should be embarassed to try to pass this place off as a golf course. They said they went public about 10 or 11 months ago I thought it would be a nice to play while I,m on vacation. The price $89.00 plus tax $97.00 total. Ifeel they owe me about $95.00 back.Course was not marked at all, the greens were in terrible shape. The grass needed to be cut, where there was grass.Dirt and bare spots everywhere. Did not know where the next hole was on at least 5 or 6 holes. Did not even finish, was so disgusted.
Overpriced for a very poor course
The course and club has been sold and is now trading under a new name - Keys Colony Country Club.
I was extremely disappointed by the condition of the course. In fact I would say it is has to be the worst kept course I have played in almost 40 years of playing golf. It makes the modest municipal courses I started playing in Glasgow in the 60's look like Augusta !
I only hope the new owners do fulfil their promises of renovating the course.
Worst ever
playing a round here was the worst golf I haver played in over a thousand rounds played. Course needs and my understanding will be renovated. The problem is they charge you 90/round to play and don't really tell you how awful the conditions are. The course is "ground under repair" EVERYWHERE! Course should not be open at this point. Just the worst. Stopped keeping score. Was brutal
