Golf Advisor: Top 25 Most Improved U.S. Golf Courses (2016 #14)
Reviews
Change is good...
I have noticed the changes in the golf course as a whole. From the tee boxes, to the greens and the attitude of the staff. I came to this course before and HATED it! Greens were horrible, tee boxes not kept up, just a bad place to play golf. But someone or something has put some money into the course, and now it is playable. Yes, its still short, and narrow in the fairways, and the greens still have some hi low spots, but putts can be made. Working on shot placement is GREAT here, only negative I have is, the scorecard has to be updated with pictures of the course on each hole. Some holes have water or hazards that can not be seen from the tee boxes or fairways.
Friendly Staff but course needs improvement
Course is narrow and not friendly for beginners. Fairway conditions were decent, but the green needs improvement. Greens were patchy and bumpy. Didn't like that there was water on the left corner on a dogleg left on the 18th hole. Still have fun as the weather was great but would have liked if the greens were maintained better.
Not worth it
Don't waste your money. Couldn't even put the greens were so long and choppy. Played better 9 holes than this.
Hackers Paradise
I'm just a hacker, not proud of my game, but I have fun playing. This course is perfect for hackers like me. Not too difficult, not too long, and no sand traps. For my online booking fee of $10 for 18 holes with a cart, I almost feel embarrassed to complain about this course. However, I must, just to be fair to all prospective future players. My main issue with this course is their greens. I play about once a week here in Southern Florida. I played this course while visiting my brother who lives in Houston. These greens are unlike any I have seen. Don't know if it's the type of grass, or a maintenance issue, but they are long and shaggy. Like they are in dire need of gutting. It just made putting a bit difficult. Other than that, I had a great time playing this course.
challenging
Very tight course, bring your a game. Not for you if you can't play the shot you see from the tee. Has made me a better golfer, no reward for being risky
Needs help
The greens are to "hairy" to putt on, as they usually are. It's as if the greens-keepers are afraid to cut them close. They need someone who knows how to maintain and keep their course in good shape. It has a good layout for a short course that makes it challenging. If they could learn how to keep those greens in good shape I would play there more often.
Hone your game
Great course to hone your game, first time you play
the course use your driver on par 4 & 5's. Play from the back tees.
This course will help your to control your drives.
If you are wild try your 3 Wood. The course will challenge your skills.
Golf at Heron Lakes
I was helped immediately and sent out. I was able to play through a few foursomes, 3somes, and 2somes. Then I was able to play as fast as I wanted. Completed the round in just over 2 hours. It was a great experience. So good that I'm thinking of going again today. :)
First time. Novice golfer
Since I'm a novice golfer, my review may not be that technical. I found the course was rather short w some rather challenging par 3s. Some running the length of beltway 8. Greens were a bit long and farways seemed narrow. There was no driving range to warm up. But it was cheap and I will continue to go here
Really enjoy playing here
I like that I can go on a Sunday afternoon and play alone or with my wife or buddy and not have anyone in front of us slowing us down or behind us rushing us.
The young lady who staffs the clubhouse is wonderful, professional, knowledgeable and friendly. I like that she works there and that I can look forward to seeing her there. She should get a raise.
Not a real golf course
Course is only 4000 total yards. Really can't hit any real golf shots here. If i ever play here again I will bring a 7 iron, gap wedge and a putter. played the worst I ever have in the past 2-3 years and still shot an 81.
The greens were terrible. I had a few 10 foot puts that hopped up in the air off line. The only positive about this course is if you have a kid or wife trying to learn to play, this course is not very daunting and manageable for them.
For another $5 you can play one of the city of Houston municipals or clear creek.
Heron Lakes - Oct, 2014
The course was in very good shape. It is a short course, but many holes have hazards that make it challenging. Few holes require a driver and most greens are reachable with a 5 wood and a short iron. Some fairways are quite narrow and require an accurate tee shot. Several holes have water parallel to the fairways. Good course for seniors, women and new players to get some good work in with irons.
Perfect for the Prie
I read a ton of reviews about this Golf Course most of which were bad to just plain awful. It's true that Heron Lakes did have a bad reputatin but it seems that things have cleaned up a bit. I played 18 Holes of Golf or $12.00!!! Come on man you can't beat that and no it's not the hardest, most pristene, course but the fairways were great but narrow. The greens could've been cut a bit closer but again for the price. I'm in again and again and again. It was a fun round of golf.
Play here to work on your short game.
I'd love to give these guys a good review but with me, it begins and ends with the condition of the greens. I'd heard that they had redone the greens so I booked a time. The course is in decent shape and there are some quality holes here. The greens however, are slow and fuzzy. If you've got an important round or tournament coming up, you might want to avoid HL until afterwards. The staff was friendly and there were marshalls constantly making rounds. This is a good place to play if you don't mind the greens.
Beautiful weather and a matching price
This course affords the opportunity to use multiple clubs because placement is the key to scoring well.
Still a Place for a Good Golfing Experience
Use to play this course often before it's restructure.. Still a good golfing experience. Not as challegening as I previously remember it. My game have improved since I last played. More Par 3's than I remembered which made for an easiler outing. Still highly recommended.
Great employees
First time on this course. Back 9 was under maintenance so we had to play front twice. Gold pro/manager gave us raincheck. Very nice of him.
Staff was exceptional in the club house. Great to meet such nice folks in the golf world.
Greens were a little slow but the staff was impressive enough I will return often.
Shawn
Course was great. Players were spread out so there was no one just behind the round in front. I will definitely be back
Overated
First thing when we got there it went down hill from there. informed that we could not take any of our own drinks on the course so we bought 4 16oz. waters and it was $8.00 for them. Way too much to pay for water. we played a few holes and the marshall came by and to told us not to drive on the par 3 or par 4 holes that it was cart path only. that's fine with me but if you are going to tell me that you don't leave by driving right down the middle of the fairway. After that he followed us and tried to hide behind trees. acted as if we were gong to steal a flag pole or something. will never go back to this course again even if the gave me a free pass. that does not even include a rating on the course. greens are high and the rest of the fairway is the same.
Fun but pricey
New greens are faster. The fairways still don't look as if they are kept in great shape. This course is also fairly short compared to most 18 hole courses. All in all it's a fun local place to play but it's a bit pricey compared to other longer courses .
