On the outside looking in.
This is a course that I really try to like. Many of the holes are well designed, a few are not. The conditions are fine, not great but not bad. I think the problem is that the greens are grainy and don't roll very true and are tough to read. There are also some almost unfair slopes on them. The very high and thick rough can be unfair due to being so close to the fairway. Guess this is a course that will be in my rotation, just needs a couple of things changed to be a top line track.
Course in very poor maintenance, owner does not care
I don't know what the others see in their excellent ratings of this course. I have tried playing it a few times for a year now and it is awful. The rough next to fairways and greens is so long we lost 3 balls where we knew they landed. Weeds are everywhere. Greens are not rolled and have many irregularities so when your putt is on line less than a foot from the cup it takes a turn from the bumps. Bunkers are horrible with weeds and no sand in most, and have weed block showing. Driving range balls are so old that dimples are gone (like hitting a knuckle ball) and some have large cracks in them.
I did some research and the owners do not care about the course. Membership is very low and the course is losing tens of thousands of dollars every month. They have cut staff so no maintenance is ever seen on the course. There are broken tractors, grass cutting equipment left on the side of the fairway or tee boxes for weeks. There is no drinks cart on the course in upper 90 degree weather, and most of the coolers on the course were empty. When I asked a staff about the coolers I was rudely told they close at 7pm and basically was told to get lost. Sure enough when we finished at 8pm and needed the bathroom to wash up the clubhouse was locked and everyone was gone! With all the other options in this area to play (and I have played many) I would recommend going elsewhere. It is just a matter of time before this club is closed.
Great for the price
Overall, the Golf Club at McKinney was well worth the money. I had a tee time for 12:00 on a Friday and the pace of play was good. Another bonus was that the beverage and food items were inexpensive. The course was in overall good condition but was at the time in need of basic mowing.
Good idea, poor execution
first of all, there were weeds everywhere...even some of the fairways. the fairways were not well maintained and had some fairly tall grass for a fairway. The bunkers were terrible and some of them were pits of mud instead of sand. I actually enjoyed the holes themselves but the terrible conditions were just not fun at all to play. In fairness, they do have a few nice holes with good sand in the bunkers. This course should definitely be called "semi-private" given the conditions of the course. The only well maintained part of the course was the greens. Overall I would say take your money elsewhere, there are so many better courses you can play at in the same price range, even if you got a really good deal like I did.
Tough course from the tips
We overall enjoyed our round. The course was wet with very little roll from early morning watering. The course is challenging from the tips and keeping your ball in play was mandatory. The greens rolled well and the fairways were in the middle of being cut so excess cut grass took away from the overall condition. The rough areas looked overgrown and also took away from the experience. There were no beverage carts or marshals visible on the course. My overall impression was that expenses are being watched and the labor is at a minimum to keep the course in decent shape. For me, I have seen that type of experience before at other metroplex golf courses. It usually has meant a change in ownership coming or a foreclosure.
Long day at course. ...
Slow pace of play and wasn't able to tee off on time due to lack of carts. When finally got cart it nearly ran out of juice at turn.
Enjoyable
This is a great course to play right now. The recent rains have been a Godsend. The greens are always fast, the service is always pleasant and I have never been paired up with anyone who wasn't great to play with.
Best Green in north DFW area
I have played here a couple of times and I feel that greens at this course seem to be the best in North DFW courses. True roll and very fast. Lag putting is very important to get a good score. Fairway condition was nice as well. However, there are several problems of this course. One, bunker was still wet and full of water after two days of rain. If your ball goes into a bunker, it's not even playable nor you would be able to find your ball. Second, the first tee is very challenging. You need to hit a perfect draw. If then, you would have a very good chance for an eagle. Otherwise you will lose your ball.
Great day of golf
It was hot, but the course was beautiful and the staff were excellent. We took frequent water breaks in the large trees and allowed others to play through. A Player Assistance actually found my lost ball for me as well! Great day of golf, bring plenty of water in the summer!
Nice Course
This was the first time I'd played this course. Holes were easy to read, and greens were in good condition. I would definitely play it again.
Sat golf
The over all course is in great shape. Greens are true and fast. The greens also hold the ball well. The only negative thing I have to say is the second cut especially around the greens is too deep. Most of it is 8 to 10 inches deep. You can be right on top of your ball and not see it. Very frustrating to have to take a ball drop 5 ft from the green. Only giving it three stars doe to the poor grass management.
this course is in very bad condition
This used to be a great golf course. It is not now. Needs to be properly mowed. Looking for balls all day long. Even the tee boxes and around the greens were 6 to 12 inches deep. No sand in bunkers. Greens were all different one slow and shaggy the next one hard and fast. Obviously the course and ownership is in trouble. Not much money to spend. I would not recommend anyone playing out here.
The course was good
The course was in very good condition. But the staff and beverage cart were not. Staff in pro shop were pre occupied with personal things and not attentive to guests.
The water barrels were not cool as in not filled the day we played but probably the day before. What water there was in there was warm. Over all experience fair
Course maintenance is non-existent
Sometimes trying something new is a terrible choice. I liked the layout that I saw online. But, once I teed off I realized that this was going to be less than enjoyable. Had a tee time, but we were scolded for teeing off on time. There is a Sr league on Wednesdays, and we were told they have priority over others. Only after explaining that we play quickly were we allowed to proceed. Greens are all sand. Bunkers are cement water holders. The worst was the lack of mowing. Perhaps they are trying to earn a U.S. Open? We passed three broken down mowers on the course. Could be a really fun track if it was shown some care.
Nice course, but...
The course itself was nice and the layout was interesting. Conditions weren't the greatest and I found it very hard to find balls in the rough that I feel I would have found on other courses. But where the course failed the worst was it's lack of yardage markers on the course. The 150 fairway markers were hard to find and there were no yardage markers otherwise. Don't play here without a GPS unit. Also, I've never been more confused on a golf course about where to go next after finishing a hole. Much better signage is needed in this regard. The positives are that these are easy things to fix and once they do I would go back.
MGC
Not a bad course for the super deal we got. Had a great time!!!!
Great for deal saver golf. But not regular price.
Beautiful day, pro shop staff very friendly, golf care died on 15, but one call to pro shop and within minutes we had a replacement. Beverage cart service would have been nice. Would come back again for the right price.
Nice layout
Short course, but demands accuracy. Most fairways tree lined, have to hit in fairway. Some up & down holes, side hill lies. Would be great course if in better shape- only average in that area.
Waste of money
Terrible condition. Overpriced. Not worth the time or money.
Great value
Love the course. It's challenging but plays fair. Every hole is different and the greens are fast with lots of breaking putts.
