Greens and tees in rough shape
Overall, we enjoyed Stonewall Orchard after hearing much praise for the course. Nice challenging layout. However, the greens and tee boxes are suffering either from the weather or poor grounds keeping.
The young cart staff were very friendly but I was taken aback by the starter warning me it was a “big boy “ course. Thanks for judging a woman in her 50’s before you have even seen me swing a club.
Great course but…
The greens on all the holes were in horrible shape. Greens looked like they belong at a $10 course. Other than that the course was awesome.
Not worth the price
Its a fairly nice course but significantly more expensive than similar courses. Tee boxes were pretty ripped up and the greens were poor.. i can spend $40 less and have a better experience at neighboring courses.
Nice but pricey
The golf course is very nice but the greens were in poor shape. Now either it’s a combo of lack of rain this summer or mower mistake but there was some major green damage in spots. Twice we moved our balls to avoid putting through it. The rest of the green is super green which makes me think, how did lack of water cause green damage when the rest of the green is carpet thick and lush green. Later in the afternoon the green was beat up and they needed to be rolled bad. Greens were way too slow for the type of course it is. A few holes were odd that the reeds were so high. I hit two good shots pushed to the edge of the fairway but couldn’t see the flag because of reeds. I found that odd. Range should be free at this price. And we feel 6 mins behind after 6 holes and the ranger had a talk with us which is never fun. Would I play it again? Yes if it is 65 bucks and the greens were faster. Not worth an hour drive at $95 plus range balls, the ranger up ur butt and slow greens. We played Makray the next day and what a gem that was.
Great Layout - Poor Greens = Bad Value
I have played this course 3-4X per season since its inception over 20 years ago, including tournaments on same. Multiple greens have issues with dead or diseased turf. Very weird, in that Chicago has had a great growth cycle this year between sun & rain. We paid $ 103 on Sunday @ 10:50am in premium slot. This course at prime time is a $ 65 course, and off-prime a $ 50 course with greens in this condition. Very disappointing.
Pooor Condition
Overpriced and poorly maintained......grass and greens are burnt up, dry and just unsatisfactory for July golf. $103 for poor conditions is not what this course is about. Such a great course but needs major help.
Thanks Kenneth (for both reviews) and thanks for playing. 4th of July is the busiest weekend of the year.
We did verify by GPS your group finished in 4:16 (5 min ahead of pace). As for dry turf, we were in a 3-week "no rain" drought and fighting that issue is something all courses were going through. (watering over 100% capacity every night with daytime specific hand watering) We all just received 2.5"+ in 24 hours, so we are all in a better spot now. A few of our greens did indeed have localized dry spots on the top of the severe slopes - mainly visual and certainly does not affect play. Beyond that, the greens are fantastic right now and we certainly welcome you to come back sometime soon. Thanks again for playing!
UNsatisfactory
I have played this course many times and must say it was in Horrible condition, burnt up greens, dried grass on fairways and rough it was like played in the dessert.
Its not August and this should not be happening after you raise prices across the board but don't water enough to maintain better conditions. And also tell Ranger Fred if your job is to keep pace with all golfers then you tell slow players/walkers on a HOLIDAY to pick up the pace, not say its not fair if they are on pace, waiting 3-4 minutes on each tee box is not keeping pace. Would not pay to play the course again this year, very sad and poor maintenance.
4:45 round ruins golf
Awesome course. Killer greens, the kind you could play all the time, however they must have had a FTG offer this week. FTG first time golfer. The groups in front of us took on average 8 to 10 strokes to get to the green - not necessarily on the green. That calculates to 15 min a hole. Cruel and unusual punishment for trying to play golf. They needed a boost from the ranger to stop playing 2 to 3 balls a hole and just use simple etiquette! It was not to be as the ranger said it's a 4:15 pace. Can't play when you can't rely on the course to enforce any rules or pace. Short term they book the fee, good for them but long term people won't come play at this ruleless free for all. It's a shame.
Hi Jarrod
Thank you so much for the review. We are glad you liked the course. Yes, slow play can be a large issue in golf and I assure you it is important to us to provide a great experience for all the players on the course. With GPS monitoring and multiple marshals on the course, we are constantly on groups to get back into position. Thank you once again for playing and we look forward to having you again soon!
Definitely Worth the Drive
Been reading about this course as one of the top courses in Illinois and it did not disappoint.
Had a great round - greens were amazing - super tough and super fast just the way they should be. Course was set away from houses so it felt very private.
It was like golfing at a very nice private course without the fee for it at $65 it was a steal for such a great course.
Shout out to the great staff John - in the club house let me replay 1&2 b/c as though there was not enough time to replay the front 9 he let me play 2 extra holes b/c I could not get enough golf- great customer service cannot wait to go back.
Thank you for the review and we are happy to hear you had a great experience all around.
See you soon!
Hello, thank you for playing and we are sorry to hear you did not find the value with your round. We do indeed have a few localized dry spots on just a few greens and a couple tee boxes on the side. Most of those areas are on the highest peak of mounds generally near the collar of the green. Most all the other 15/16 greens are fantastic as to be expected when playing here. Rest assured, we have been battling these select areas to get them back to a visually respectable level. The 3-week period entering July with no rain and 90+ degrees everyday was challenging time period. We appreciate the patience as we have extremely high standards as well. Thank you so much for playing and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
