River Bend Golf Club
About
River Bend Golf Club combines some of the most unique play in the area with a course designed to provide an exciting golfing experience for players of all levels. Beautiful oak trees and meandering streams give the golf course its character, with elevation changes, multi-tiered greens and challenging areas of forced carry-including water features-and areas of forced lay-up in a links-style course, especially on the front 9. The back 9 is a more traditional golf course. All of this combined with the Texas wind makes River Bend a formidable challenge for even scratch golfers. It's one of the only only true links courses in south Texas. The staff is super and the course is very affordable. River Bend Golf Club has a unique practice facility that features an aqua range with an island green. A large putting green makes the Maverick a super practice area.
Distance: About 33 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio and worth the trip. Take Rt 181 from the Southeast side of San Antonio. The course and facilities are located in the Avalon Subdivision.

Worth the drive
I live in San Antonio. It was a 40 minute drive and I can't wait to do it again. The greens are in better condition than any course I've recently played in SA. Friendly staff, overall a great course.
Hidden Gem
First time playing and will definitely be going more often
Was ok
It’s been awhile since I’ve played but nothing has changed fairways are rock hard and so where the tee boxes could barley put my tee in the ground the greens where nice after hole 5 though
I play this course almost weekly and miles and the girls in the club house are always super friendly. But this last time the older gentleman working the club house was rude and hateful. Anytime he is there I will not play the course I will leave.
Bad course
If you like playing golf on the moon, this is the course for you. Hardly any grass. And course has not been watered. Used to be a very nice place to play. Not worth the money to play there. This one is off my list.
Not worth the drive - Abrasive and rude staff
Course is not bad and not great. Average at best. A lot of damage from wild hogs. Tee boxes are a bit beat up and littered with broken tees that appear to have been there awhile. Greens were in okay shape. Fairways hard and spotty in some places. Some cart paths are broken and very uneven.
Staff in clubhouse were unprofessional. At check in they were loud and abrasive. A single player in front of me at check in was lectured about showing up and the staff spoke as if they were doing the guy a favor to let him on the course. I had a tee time for a twosome and when teeing off 3 singles were sent up to join us. That turned into a tense conversation between all players. Ultimately we had to play as a group of 5 as there was no one from the course to address the issue other than the staff in the clubhouse that created the issue.
Approached staff after the round to see who they meant to join our tee time. They seemed annoyed and said “that’s a golf course on a Saturday morning”. I thought it odd because the course did not appear to be busy and most of the players that morning were part of a tournament that started on the last 4 holes of the course 50 minutes after our tee time.
The staff encouraged me to contact the owners if I had a complaint. I called the number they gave me, left a brief message, and did not get a return call.
Basically the course and the experience is not worth the drive from San Antonio. I suppose if you live there it’s worth not having a long drive to another course but I won’t go back. I also doubt I will get a return call from the “owner”.
