Red Tail Golf Club
About
Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts sprawls across wooded hills, weaving through numerous streams and ponds. It is the first course in New England to be certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Signature. Golfers can enjoy spectacular views from every hole. Named after the Red Tail Hawks that soar above the golf course, the landscape offers classic New England golf with maple trees, birches, oaks, and pines. There are also tall grasses and sand along the fairways and greens, providing a few elements of coastal courses. The Red Tail layout offers a great amount of variety thanks to the diverse landscape. There is an interesting mix of risk-reward opportunities and link-style touches throughout the course. It is no surprise that this scenic and challenging course is one of the most popular public golf courses in Massachusetts.

Signs of course condition improvement abound, like the sod cutouts here on the par-5 2nd. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 05/03/2021

Great Course
Redtail is just a notch above other courses in eastern MA. A bit of a drive from Boston but well worth. Show up early and hit range balls for free for as long as you want.
Maintenance lacking
The greens are bumpy, and not up to par. Obviously, we purchased a discounted round through Golfnow, and have no complaints at that price level. But at full price, Red Tail isn't worth it. Especially since Shaker Hills has been rebuilt, and is priced 20% below Red Tail. Not a premium public course, but priced like one.
High reviews by others are all spot on !
I wish it was closer to my home because I would definitely make Red Tail one of my regulars. It was that good even with the greens still recovering from a prior aerating and playing in light rain. Having 5 tee options offered everyone a chance to enjoy this course with each hole offering up something new. Everyone in my group truly had a fun time.
This course lives up to the hype!
This course was worth the trip! Friendly staff, considerate grounds staff (shutting down power equipment when we were teeing off), and excellent course conditions made it worthwhile. Only drawback was that greens had only recovered about 80% from aeration.
May 2013
Played there on a warm May day, the fairways were in nice shape however the greens had been punched just two weeks earlier one of the staff mentioned after I was on the course practice area. Other than the greens was a good day, will definitely go back to play again.
This course is a challenge to every skill level
Red Tail has 5 different sets of tees to challenge all golfers. Some of the beautiful holes around with many elevated tee shots. The 18th is possible to reach for long hitter but requires pin point accuracy. I would recommend this course to all who enjoy fine course conditions and risk reward opportunities.
Pure New England Beauty
Every hole starts from elevated tees, with a view of pure New Engalnd beauty. The grass in the faitways is cut so well you can putt off it. It is a very fair course for all handicaps. I love to play this course.
Absolutely great conditions for this or anytime of year.
This course was top-notch and on par with any country club conditions. I'm from Pennsylvania and wish this course was within driving distance (I was in Massachusetts for the weekend which was a 4.5 hour drive). Highly recommend anyone in the Boston area needs to play this course.
Delightful eye candy
I was impressed with all of the well laid out elevation changes. Beautiful course to enjoy a round of golf. It's now one of my favorite courses in Central Mass.
Great course
Red Tail is a great course with many interesting holes. $100 is too much for me during the peak season but $45 through GolfNow in April is a great deal.
One of my favorite courses in MA
Just a great layout with so many good holes. The closing stretch of holes 14-`18 are some of my favorite holes ever.
great elevation change
for april golf outing course was in great shape had fun
nice course
some very interestingly designed holes, especially on the back 9, fun to play, a little on the expensive side, in very good condition
Great course
The course was in great condition considering how cold it was the night before. There were no leaves on the fairways, which was amazing. The staff was great, I'll definitely be back again.
The course was an overall great value for the GolfNow price.
The course can be very challenging from the back tees; but is very playable and the condition of the fairways and greens was spot on.
nice views off the tee
Waiting to tee off on #2 for 10 minutes?
A course back up after one hole? Are you kidding me?
A 5 1/2 hour round, about an hour too long
Disappointing to wait to hit every single shot, could not establish a rhythm, which in golf is hmmmmmmmm......
EVERTHING !!!!!!!!!
Play it once to say you have
Nice course, home of 2009 Womens Pub Links, Long holes don't play as long as advertised, Staff actually hooked us up with a tee-time conflict where we only had 3 slots and brought a 4th. Traveled 100 Minutes to play and although nice, I don't believe I will make a return trip.
Worth the trip very nice
Nice. challenge but fair. Best. course I have played in New England
fun, hard but fair, very scenic
course was in very good condition. lots of great views from the tee boxes. nice mix of holes, too. lots of elevation changes and rolling fairways, but at the same time I never felt like I had any unfair shots or circus putts. I'm a 7 handicap, and my wife is a 35, and we both had a great time. got a $45 rate on golfnow - a great value!
regarding pace of play - we were over 5 hrs but it was cart path only. suspect that a regular day would be on the slow side, but not that slow.
Great course, pace of play a bit slow.
Course was in great shape, i'm an 18 handicap and found it to be challenging but not impossible. Only frustrating thing was the lack of rangers on the course keeping the pace of play up. Seeing as we played after 1pm in the fall, we would be cutting it close with losing daylight at the end of the round. You could see in back of us that people thought the same thing and were driving all over the course just to find an empty hole to play before the sun went down. By the time we got to 16, there was a backup of 2-3 groups on the tee.
