Simple yet unique
Very fun and challenging course. Forces you to use a lot of different shots and clubs. Couple holes are set up really uniquely. Wish the water was a little cleaner for aesthetic appeal around the course
Sawmill is a nice little parkland course
I am becoming quite fond of Sawmill as it presents some interesting challenges and yet is not overly long from the Blues. Several holes (3 par 4's and 1 par 5) are forced carries unless you are a long bomber. To play them efficiently you may have to consider using your 180 yard club off the tee as big numbers lie in wait for the foolhardy. The greens have some subtle breaks that can have you talking to yourself but roll true if read right.
You won't be disappointed at the senior rates and the club has a very friendly feel about it.
sawmill
the pace of play was not very good.Too many 2 somes.we had 3 of them behind us .In front of us were 2 four somes which were real slow.the staff was friendly. We saw no marshell the whole day.
One of my favourites
I was a member here 35+ years ago and enjoy coming back to play every time. There are many holes that have that wow factor for me and it is always in great shape. A must play for a desired mid-level course.
Dear dw57,
Thanks for your kind review of Sawmill. We're glad you continue to return after all these years and we appreciate that you've recognized the improvements that have made Sawmill a 'must play' course! We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Where did GregMan241 Play?
It's confusing reading this persons review. I have played this golf course many times and it is probably my favourite in Niagara. The course and facilities are constantly improving and Jeremy, Carrie and staff do an excellent job. Conditions are normally excellent . Maybe he didn't play well.
I am confused by the disparaging remarks as well. I have always remembered Sawmill to be a well kept course throughout the years and always a friendly experience.
I am actually glad that Sawmill is recently on board with Golf Now, as it is certainly one of the better courses in the area.
I have always enjoyed their warm up/practice facility and really look forward to the updated investments to the course and facility.
I was actually going to get out on Friday but was deterred by the rain, however, I remain anticipated for my next hot deal and formal review.
Thanks for comments about GregMan241 - we were thinking the same thing! We appreciate that Sawmill is your favourite course in the area and we'll try to keep it that way! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Good and bad
We booked a time on golfnow for a sat pm slot. 3 of us. We were 2 couples, our friends wife doesn't play but wanted to ride and share the experience with us. We were willing to pay cart fee and green fee if needed but they refused to allow her to ride and not play. Supervisor was unrelenting. So, she drove home sad and her hubby not happy. We played, course was enjoyable, pace was slow almost. 5 hrs even though they push 4 hrs. No Marshall's. Then at end I go to post my score not a member of GAO or golf canada so I was very dissappointed. Tried to appease us at end with some discount 4 some passes. We won't be back. Also, not lady friendly for washrooms on front 9 nothing till the 8th. Also if you have a bad back don't ride (fairways very bumpy no cart paths).
Since we were expecting your review please let us share our side of the story and respond to your comments.
As you've noted, our policy is that we don't allow riders on the course. For the enjoyment of all golfers, we feel it's in everyone's best interests to only have golfers on the course. At the time of check-in, you failed to even mention you had a rider and certainly never offered to pay. You were also quite rude (and relentless) to our Pro Shop staff who were just doing their job and being consistent with course policy.
Please note that GolfNow advises you during the booking process to check the rules and policies of each particular course - as we are all different.
Our Pro Shop staff monitors the pace of play and we were on the course all afternoon. You actually played in 4 1/2 hours and never waited on the final holes.
Sawmill is not a member of the GAO/Golf Canada and as a result of their policies, we no longer display our course rating or slope. We apologize for this inconvenience.
You're correct that the on-course washroom is located after the 8th hole (and after the 11th and 14th). But don't forget, you're also near the clubhouse after the 2nd hole, 5th hole and 9th hole.
While we don't have cart paths along the fairways (we feel they spoil the scenery!) we do have concrete paths beside many tees and greens.
Once again, we apologize for this situation but we hope you'll take advantage of the discount coupons we gave you to give us another chance.
A course that keeps getting better
I have always loved this course. Every year it has improved, and truly a beautiful course now.
The elevation changes, doglegs, hazards and bunkers make it challenging, and technical but very rewarding and fun.
I was amazed at the bunkers improvements this year - manicured to perfection. fescue surrounds each bunker, and each bunker looks quite a bit deeper than before, with consistent and soft sand.
For this price, it is hard to beat Sawmill. MUST play in Niagara.
Highly recommend it!
Thanks Colin for your great review of Sawmill. We're glad you've noticed all the improvements over the years and we hope you'll be back soon to see even more. Yes, we do have some new bunkers this year and we work hard to keep them in good shape. I'll make sure our maintenance staff knows they're doing a great job. See you soon.
Great Course
This is the first time in a few years that I played this course and I am glad I did. Course is in excellent condition overall. Signage to all holes are clearly marked, tee boxes in good shape and greens were perfect. Got a great price on Golf Now and will return this year for sure.
Thanks for your nice comments about the course. We're glad you came back after a few years away and we look forward to seeing you again soon at Sawmill.
Would take the drive to play again.
Course is well laid out with various landscapes.
Staff was extremely friendly.
Thanks for your nice review of the course and our staff. We look forward to seeing you again soon at Sawmill.
Better Courses for the money
At $50+ there are far better courses available to play in the area. The rules preventing me from naming them, but if you play the area, you know which ones I am talking about.
Maintenance - The greens in disrepair. One was unavailable. The fairways rock hard. The intermediate rough was not maintained.
Design - 5 of the holes run side by side so watch for errant tee shots. My buddy almost got hit.
Also almost got hit on the second tee from someone hitting from 15.
Pace of play - 5 hours... need I say more.
Food - Cart girl non-existent. Food was overpriced and poor!
Facilities - Don't wash your car before you play. Dusty gravel parking lot. Club house is alright but sewage smell in locker rooms.
Added to which, the owners son and wife are rude! It was like they were doing you a favor by letting you play the course.
I played there a lot years ago when George was running it. Much better then. Won't be going back. The other reviews are either staged or the people haven't played much golf.
We all have rounds at golf courses where the course isnt running optimally that day. I've got to say, out of the six rounds I've played there, we had one 5 hour round, a couple 4.5's and the other 3 were 4 hrs or less.
I was there once when a couple of the greens were not well-kept, but I rather enjoy SawMill's greens.
I feel bad for you if the cart girl was never around - it happens at any course that is not premium though. If you keep an eye open, you can spot the marshals, but they rarely get in the way. I did have one time a marshal was asking us to speed up erroneously, but other than that, I prefer it if the marshals remain transparent.
I definitely play a lot of golf, and I dont find your $50+ criteria fair at all. There are two other courses that I play at in the same price range as SawMill, one is comparable and the other is inferior. Any other Golf Courses in the area definitely worth playing are all near $100.
I do agree with the gravel parking lot though.
Great value and Test
Easy golf course to walk, recently renovated club house, great job! Course gets better everyday, been playing there about 7 years now, and in the last 5 it has really improved, greens were amazing right out of the gate in mid April, good mix of holes, def enough risk reward shots to be played.
Best part of this course is the PEOPLE! Pro Shop is great, accommodating. New Junior tee markers playing half the distance of the course for the kids ( fabulous idea ) .. really a big fan of Sawmill, I buy the players card there every year, 100.00 gets you discounted golf all season and 3 free rounds! Worth the extra little drive to get there, overall, I would say its the best value in Niagara region, course always in great shape and not $70-80 to play, but plays as nice as those courses that charge that much.
Thanks for your kind review and noticing all the improvements we've been making. We'll keep working hard to keep Sawmill the best value course in Niagara!
fun round
nice round with cart and taxes for 51 dollars ....would play again
Value Value Value
Sawmill is a good test of golf with a interesting variety of holes. There are long and short par 3's and par 4's. The course will make you pay for bad shots but will reward good shots. It is a family run place but the layout was designed professionally. It is reasonable and fun!!
Thanks for your nice review of the course. We're glad you enjoyed the variety and challenge of the holes. We're always improving so we hope to see you again soon!
Since when does a golf course team need to defend comments from paying customers?
You don't see this on other Golf Now listed courses.
Makes you think that perhaps the positive comments posted here are or were staged? ( without prejudice ).
I was considering playing Sawmill... but after reading the comments I will try another course.
May I suggest, if all ithe comments / reviews are legitimate that the SawmillGolfTeam just relax... and let us the players make the judgement on posted comments / reviews.
Dear Bruce,
Thanks for your recent review of Sawmill. We're sorry that you didn't completely enjoy your day. Although you've complained about some twosomes behind you, please note that there were no twosomes in front of you and we were fully booked from 6:30am. The middle of the day was quieter so we did allow a few twosomes to play alone at that time. I'm surprised that you found the pace of play slow as almost all groups finished in just over 4 hours. We did have a marshall on the course all day - I personally spoke to your group, returned your son's cell phone, and waved to you in passing. We do try to keep our distance so that we don't interfere with your game. Hopefully, when you visit Niagara in the future you'll consider playing at Sawmill again.
Best regards,
The Sawmill Team
