Diamond of the Muskokas
I've been anticipating playing The Rock after reviewing many comments this summer. The course did not disappoint. The overall condition of the course was excellent, greens ran very smooth and true. The yardage book (complimentary) was excellent and the suggestions made by architect Nick Faldo were right on the money. This course is a keeper and will be played many more times in the future.
excellent course
excellent layout and designed course.
A good test of golf
First time at The Rock. Got a good deal through GolfNow. The course was very wet, it has been a very wet summer, so cart paths only. We played the day before the Ontario Junior Men's Championship so there were a lot of practice rounds going on but the pace of play was very good. Don't be misled by the yardage, it is a tough track. Some narrow areas, lots of elevation changes and challenging greens. Very typical of the courses in the Muskoka area, granite outcrops, trees, water.
Beautiful Course
What a beautiful course, my favourite in the area.
Plays fair from the red tees a very enjoyable round.
Beautiful layout throughout the rocks of Muskoka!
The greens are huge with lots of levels and in perfect condition.
Proshop staff was excellent, the golf pro was in the shop when we arrived ... he talked with us for quite a while, gave us some tips and wished us well. Totally unexpected, but very much appreciated.
Great day, excellent course!
Great Day
Played on a hot Monday and had a discount as others did on that day. Fantastic conditions on the course. Never a bad lie if you keep it on the fairway. The course seems difficult to some long hitters as you are penalized if you don't keep it on the the fairway. Just as it should be. Every hole has a unique feature and awesome views from many holes. Never boring, Need to play a few time to determine best lines and landing areas of greens.
Fantastic views
What a beautiful layout and design... from clubhouse to green the Rock delivers. After golf the restaurant is equally amazing
Well worth the visit! Will play again! Golf now had a fantastic deal!!!!
What a great golf course
We had great weather...that helps...the greens are perfect, fast and healthy. Level tee boxes, and do yourself a favour and play from the appropriate tee. If you hit it straight, then it's an easy course...play the club that the shot calls for and keep the book handy....beautiful views
Not what is used to be
Faldo would be disappointed. This place has gone downhill. It used to be a classy place but hardly anymore. Nobody at bag drop or around carts. Charged extra money for a small bag of range balls to warm up before tee time. They expect you to use the mats at the range, instead of the large natural tee deck thats available (lazy greens crew). Range is poorly maintained, bunkers are ugly and rough around the edges. On course is in great condition, the greens are beautiful. However greens crew did not stop blowing leaves right beside the greens we were putting at, or when we were hitting other shots. Seemed like un-trained kids working the equipment. So class-less,... between the range experience and greens crew not stopping or caring about golfers coming thru... it felt like a $10 public course. Such a shame as this was once one of the classiest courses in Muskoka. Not anymore.
Comments and summary of course somewhat inconsistent, I agree the course is a challenge especially if you cant keep it on the well maintained generous fairways. Bunkers on the driving range are not the same condition as on the course, however i have never had to play out of range bunkers.
#1 In Muskoka
For a public course, this is second to none in the Muskoka area. Never in golfing life have I seen such beautifully manicured fairways, equal cut rough, flat tee decks, true rolling greens on all 18 with minimal ballmarks. My hat is off to all maintenance crew for making this track look so picturesque. Some holes even offer a sense of peace and serenity; other holes will literally take your breath away (for better or for worse). One thing I suggest: make sure you bring a GPS as there are some blind shots on certain holes. This course is a must play on golfers bucket lists!
Course is difficult but fair
My wife and I played an early Spring round after weeks of heavy rains but the course, while wet, held up well. The staff, as always, was friendly and helpful.
The Rock is first class layout with several VERY difficult holes but if you play from the appropriate tees the experience is great.
Amazing Shape and Humbling
The Rock is a personal favourite. Very challenging course that tests your true shot making abilities.
Faldo Being Nasty
The Rock is an astoundingly beautiful golf course with iconic central Ontario scenery. However the slopes and blind shots make it an extremely difficult, probably unfair challenge. Prepare to loose lots of balls and to have good shots roll far away. It would take a lot of rounds to learn how best to play it. That being said, I will play a fourth round because the challenge for me here is to break 100. Usually I play courses to break 90.
I only ate the cart girl's sandwich and it was fine. I did look at the menu and it looks interesting having finer dining along with pup style food.
Challenging
What a beautiful course, must play more than once to know how to play, course management is extremely important to score well
bad day
It was so busy we had to waith on every hole 2-3 groups some my team mates came from Windsor to play . They saying no more. we finish 18 holes over 5 and half hours. this is disaster day for me.
Amazed
My buddy and i had a fantastic time golfing at the rock golf. It was our first time there and we had know expectations but having a good time and hopefully have a good round of golf. This course was in beautuful conditions fairways was great and the greens were fast and slanted, so putting had to be very delicate. Was very impressed with the staff right from the time we dropped our bags off. They had my name on a cart ready for our arrival. For our first time on this course we found it very challenging and the fact many of the holes were well hidden made it that more intriguing in what club to use. I will definately be going back and bringing friends with me to enjoy this golf course
Excellent Course
We are a group of twice a week golfers.
The course has 4 T decks but even so it is a very challenging course. It is definitely not for beginners !not a forgiving golf course if you don't have pretty good control of your shots,.
We enjoyed our day though scores soared by 7/8 strokes! Bring your A game .... But even if you don't you will enjoy this course .... It's awesome
Heatwave
Love the course, tough layout so pick the right tees for your handicap,I played up one because my brother was a higher handicap and the course still won.But I'm blaming the100 degree heat and the mountain terrain for my higher than normal score. My only complaint is they could have posted that they aerated the greens, putts were not holding lines, you can forgive a10 fter for bouncing offline but a 3fter.Enough wining, if your in Muskoka area you must play the Rock ,a great test.
Visual Beauty, great golf too!
I enjoyed my round at the course for many reasons most importantly the visual beauty of the course. The golf is challenging but fair, the staff was attentive and friendly and the amenities with the free range balls and beautiful clubhouse made the day that much better. Great job!
I find it hard to believe that a low cap golfer finds this course extremely challenging.
