Earl of Mar Golf Course
About
Located west of Glasgow, Earl of Mar Golf Club overlooks the River Clyde with views that stretch beyond the Kilpatrick Hills. A scenic forest filled with more than 250 chestnut and beech trees shaped the design of the course, carving the doglegs and framing the greens. It has a traditional parkland layout that offers a fair amount of challenges balanced by generous fairways that are beginner-friendly. Many holes present interesting risk-reward opportunities where good strategy and some skill will get you far, but they are not too punishing if you are slightly errant. Weaving through the trees requires accuracy and numerous strategically placed bunkers emphasize its importance even further. There are only a few holes that play right alongside the river though golfers will enjoy scenic views on almost every hole.

First class golf day
Course in great condition and as with the first time I played it, 5 years ago, I found the layout both interesting and challenging.
A nice course with some interesting holes.
No two holes are the same with some unique challenges.
Greens are a little inconsistent and some of the bunkers are full of stones which is was a bit disappointing.
Overall, a nice track which I would play again.
Amazing
Played the other Saturday afternoon with a bunch of friends over from Ireland it was absolutely amazing. Young lad in the pro shop was unreal. We showed up with no balls he was still waiting on a delivery so he went to his car and gave us a pack each of his OWN callaway balls ended up chatting with him and members for 20 mins and missed our tee time. Course was astonishing great condition, superb layout, good tough track off of the tips really extends the course, greens were in good condition, bunkers were really good except from the odd footprint from golfers not raking them.
Came back in got a latte from the boy in the pro shop it was amazing, was looked after the whole day service was really great slipped the lad a tenner tip thoroughly deserved it was the only cash we had. Overall had a fab day couldn’t get any better for your money.
First time here will be back.
Feared the worst due to other reviews on Golf Now but thoroughly enjoyed our day. Greens were true, but as others have commented were on the slow side.
Great Course
Had a great round, course was in excellent condition
Challenging Riverside / Parkland course
Enjoyed the round - the adverse weather meant we had the course much to ourselves.
NB: The confirmation from GolfPasss states that "trolleys are not allowed"
This is NOT TRUE - the Proshop didn't know why it said that and it must be very off putting for senior golfers.,
GolfPass didn't mention this during the actual booking process.
Well laid out course and would love to play it when it's in 'summer' conditions. A great test of the white tees.
Good Course
Nice day at Mar Hall in excellent weather. Course in good condition and bunkers looking fine. Misunderstanding at reception for booking us in which resulted in a bit of a wait. Overall a good day in lovely setting on a great course
Brilliant course
Reading previous reviews I was pretty apprehensive even tho I have played this course once before! The negative previous comments to that end seem very harsh! My friend and I are by no means pro golfers but thought the course is in excellent conditions, great fairways with plenty of run! Greens decent neither slow nor too fast! A very enjoyable course good layout and the staff were very accommodating, but as per previous comments they did ask if it was booked under golf now maybe just a wee glitch in the matrix that needs fixed! Other wise staff couldn’t have been more helpful! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COURSE!!

Great layout but terrible greens
Basically the title, my local council course has greens that are much better than here which is very disappointing. Looked like they hadn't been cut in a couple of weeks and the cups had no plastic ring so they were kind of squashed in and unappealing to putt in to. Woule be a cracking course if the greens were up to somewhat of a decent standard. Spoke to a member who said they are always like that so theres not much hope of a return for us. Its a good day out if you've got the round on the cheap. Definitely not worth £50-£60 a round.
Such a shame
Having been a member when this course opened for 3 years, I was dismayed to have seen it fall into such disrepair. The ‘pro shop’ is a cupboard and the clubhouse is akin to a municipal course. The course itself was in the worst condition of any course I have played in the last 5 years. It was clear there had been no ground staff preparing or tending. In short, there was litter everywhere, bunkers hadn’t been raked for what must’ve been days, the greens hadn’t been cut and it was like putting on the fairway. While some of the blame of course lies with the players, the lack of any tangible effort made by the golf team is reflective of how people are treating it. There are some lovely holes on this course and when playing it’s best, it is both a challenge and a joy. I hope a management team come in soon and return this track to its former glory. Would not recommend visiting until it has done so. Such a shame.
Great course in bad condition
Let me start by saying I've played this course at least 8 times over 4 years and up until I played on Saturday the 16th April 2022 I genuinely rated it on my top 5 courses (out with the famous and wildly more expensive bucket list courses) , the layout, scenery, length, and condition, great course....until I played on Saturday ☝️, tees were ok, fairways decent, bunkers were terrible, very little sand, not been raked in a month! Very poor, but the greens were some of the worst I've played, grass long, grainy and possibly diseased, needed rolled badly, pitchmarks not repaired,
Please get this course back in great condition, because when it's in good condition it's an absolute gem
Mar Hall
Really enjoy playing this course and the varying types of holes to be played, only downside on the day was that the greens played extremely slow due to being a bit heavy.
Shocking day from the beginning
Had booked a 4 ball round with 3 friends for 9:30. We arrived about 8:50 l to loosen up before going beginning our. We entered into the pro shop to tell him we had a tee time. His response was “was it golf now”. He then continue to tell us that they had “been in constant dialogue with golf now to remove the course from the website” and told us “he would try and fit us on because they were medals on that day”. He said it we had to start of 9 or there wasnt any space. Luckily we were all there early to start early. However, it was save to say that it was a great start.
We then started our round and tried to enjoy the day. However once we started to play the round we sound found out how terrible the conditions were. The tee boxes were in such poor conditions, different lengths of grass, divots everywhere. The fairway grass were really long as well, couldn't tell the difference between the light ruff or fairway.
To top it all off the greens were horrendous. Completely lacked any consistency between each green and against different lengths of grass, covered in sand and just all in all poorly maintained.
We continue on with the conditions and tried to enjoy our day. However it got worse. The two ball behind us, who were never close enough to even really wait on us on the green, decided to come over and give us a scathing review on our and explained how it was the longest game of golf of their lives and how they had to wait for ages for every shot. My group are not the best golfers in the world, however we played a 4 ball in 3 hours and 30 minutes which to me doesnt seem excessive, specially considered we had to wait on the group in front of us in a couple of the holes.
All in all was one of the most unenjoyable experiences at a golf course, considering it was such a lovely day weather wise.
Will never be back to the course.
