Arrived at 7:30 for a 740 tee time, shop wasnt open so could t get a scorecard.
Have to walk half the course just to find the first tee and from there it gets worse. Struggled to find most of the tees, there was the odd sign pointing the way but it was so poorly managed, we thought we were playing the 6th tee but it turns out it was probably the 11th, then we played the next tee back down where we came across another tee box which we assumed must have been the 6th...but no it was the 12th or 13th(no markings on the tee box) we fmdid eventually find the 6th by which point I think wed already played the 11th 12gh and 13th.
Chaos really, we gave up after around 12/13 holes in total.
Wont be going back ever.
I would recommend it but with some caveats
The course was good and the ground was good. I did have several issues I would warn others about. Firstly, the old first hole is out of action and they have moved every hole up one. This means the old 18th has been cut in half to make a 17th and 18th. I was a bit disappointed in this change as I used to like the challenging 18th. I also thought the walk to the first tee was way too long and they could look at better signage as I was not sure where it was. Also, on the 16th, there is a pole to signal where the green is as you can't see over the hill, however, if you follow this, you will end up very left and as there is no map on the scorecard, it is impossible to know ahead of time it is a dogleg.
I will definitely be playing here again as it is challenging but not too hard.
Pleasantly surprised
Played on a Saturday morning just as a comp was starting, suggested we play from the 9th which we did. Decent test with above average greens. Course in good condition will return, members are a friendly bunch and a nice bar afterwards, a little on the hilly side but nothing too strenuous.
Challenging Course
First time on this course and really enjoyed playing it. Some very challenging tees which require accurate drives and you have to place the ball well due to the sloping fairways. It was in great condition all around, fairways really well manicured and fast greens. It's a very physical course, you certainly feel like you have had a good workout by the time you finish. My only criticism is that there is no course map and the information on the tees is very basic. We confused the 12th for the 5th and had to retrace our steps having completed it. Otherwise would recommend this course but not for novices or people with physical disabilities unless they use a buggy.
Brilliant course
Honestly cracking course this for the money I'll be definitely coming back soon
great location for golf
this was a great 18 holes of golf with everything you would need to challenge you a new golfer or and experienced one with a great layout and easy to layout from hole to tee off area. i would 10/10 come here again great place for golf.
Not the best but okay
Taking the time of year in to account the course was okay. The greens needed a bit of attention and the fairways held a lot of water in places.
Will definitely play it again in the summer.
Good Work In Progress
Having played this course in years gone by and now returning a few times this year, I can see the hard work and intentions to return this to a very decent course. Once the 1st hole is ready again,(maybe during the growing season) with the continued hard work by the green keepers this course will definitely become popular again.
Very muddy...1 hole closed.
I paid on line but the staff didn’t believe me, I had to search for the email to verify it.
Not what it once was.
The course is not being well maintained, greens aren’t in good condition and there’s quite a few boggy patches around the course. Not sure if they’re ever going to restore the 1st tee to what it once was. If you can ignore all this then the course layout is great.
First time out
My 1st experience of the Beacon beast and although I wouldn’t say it is my last as I appreciate how difficult it is to maintain a course, it was not in great condition. No map on the scorecards, no signage directing next hole and no posts to guide you to the holes on the long par 4/5’s. You will get pretty confused at the course layout whilst it is under reconstruction but confident to remember for next time. The fairways were fairly rough and don’t really carry the ball and the greens were not at a great standard, some in repair and some are very patchy and uneven with excess debris. As it is an open course I found that there was a lot of the general public using the footpaths along the way which then naturally slowed my play as I needed to wait for them to pass as some of the footpaths cross the holes. I believe once this course has been reconstructed and the issues dealt with it would be a great course in a great location. The Beacon will surely rise again
Course conditions
Worst course i have ever played. Diabolical condition. Shouldn’t be taking bookings in the condition it is in. Green keeper admitted that the fairways and greens have not been touched for a month. Could not make out the fairway from the rough. Greens painfully slow due to being so long. Flagsticks removed from fourth hole onwards so hard to work out what to aim for. A lot of work needed. Pic attached of a ‘fairway’. Avoid
