Recent rain means winter rules
It's good to have this course back on Teeofftimes as it has been absent for most of this year no doubt because of member demand for tee times. There is quite a lot of work underway on the course which is a good sign - resources being available to do what is necessary. The ground under repair is not intrusive. Recent rain has meant winter rules are needed already. It is a tight course so if you can hit the ball straight you will enjoy your round.
Impressive greens
Really enjoyed my round. Friendly welcome in the Pro Club Shop. Notably well kept greens, which were fun to play - especially for the time of year. Fairways also very good, compared to some other local courses. I liked the names of the holes on the card. The layout isn't completely intuitive, but overall this is well worth a visit
very pleasant but bobbly greens
A wonderful course, well laid out and challenging. It was our first time there and so it was great to venture into the unknown. We were given a course map and directed o where we needed to go which was nice and friendly. We spoke to a few while we were there and everyone was cheerful and warm. Course was laid out well with a couple of holes which needed a little strategy and discussion. There are a couple of long par 3's which were very tough and one short par 3 that lines a row of gardens into which one shot may have ventured and luckily there was no yell or greenhouse destruction. The greens had recently been sanded and spiked so we suffered with bobbles and weaves and the odd quirky roll that niggled us. Hitting them was interesting as the sand seemed to make them pop and roll a bit further than expected but when putting it was very hard to read and the lack of turning surprised us. factoring the weather and conditions, recently, the course is in great shape. It was surprisingly quiet in the afternoon and that really helped us enjoy the course and would go back for sure.
Fairways in very poor condition
I play here a few times every year and the fact that I return regularly shows I usually enjoy my round. Earlier this year I thought the course was recovering well from last summer's drought but now I am not so sure. At present the fairways are pock marked with bare patches and my ball rested in an impossible dry-mud lie on at least 10 occasions. I realise the ground staff are trying to address the problem but proper measures will not be possible until the autumn rains arrive. I will return next spring to see how things are going but not before.
Don’t Play Here
This is a terrible golf course. The green are bad and the fairways are atrocious. Give this a very wide berth, even for £21
Lovely Day
Always enjoy playing at Coombe Wood. Challenging course and friendly staff. A winning combination.
Great Value - Challenging Course
A tight challenging course where every tee shot needs careful thought. Unpredictable and interesting layout (plenty of holes overlap each other but cleverly designed) which is complimented with superbly maintained greens and bunkers.
Perfect course for iron play practice with true putting surface throughout the 18 holes.
Great value for money
Coombe Wood. Excellent little course.
Excellent little course. Real value for money. Warm and welcoming.
Superb service
Despite torrential rain through the night the course was still open. I received a call from the friendly pro shop who couldn't be more accommodating updating us on the course. We even had a buggy booked and were able to take it out with some conditions on where to go. Course played fair, weather shocking but still thoroughly enjoyable. Only disappointment was that we were too late back in the bar to get something to eat 7:30pm.
Course is well maintained and the head groundsmans move to club manager seems to have worked well in a club which has improved significantly over the last few years.
Fairways have deteriorated
It's the first time we've played the course this year. There seems to have been some improvements to the bunkers, front 9 layout and greens; and changes to the tee boxes, but the fairways have lost the quality. The back 9 used to be immaculate, but the grass seems to have died and it is inconsistent. You can hit down the fairway and still land on a patch of hard sand (front & back 9). Disappointing in comparison to some of the other local courses and in comparison to last years condition.
A Gem
First nine top of hill, good air, second nine in the valley. Opportunities to try out that new driver (for which you remortgaged your house). Also some over trees challenges, distance queries, like short the club or go for it. Occasional dry turf patches but ground base is sand with lots of mature trees, roots taking moisture in places. Some of the best green tees I've driven off and greens were not a pushover. Nice character to the place and friendly likeable pro.
Good value for money
The staff were welcoming and offered all the advice I needed. The course is well fitted to the area available. The tee boxes need a bit of attention to level them out. The fairways were a little worn in places, which may have been due to the changeable weather conditions recently. The bunkers, as with most courses need to have a consistent amount of sand. Some were good and some were bare. The greens were the best part of the course and we're in a very good condition.
The changing room was fine but the wash facilities could be modernised a bit. However, it is a frieny little course that I would recommend to anyone.
A hidden gem of a course
Hidden in a private estate in kingston this is a fantastic little course.
