Shockingly bad greens
Well they have really let this course go since I played it this time last year. The greens at Scalm Park are way better. Honestly really disappointing and definitely not worth the money. I understand the course is going to be under new management shortly as they have leased it to Go Golfing for the next 25years. Greens really poor for the time of year with large bare and brown patches on most of them. Very slow as well. Fairways too long and just general signs of lack of car throughout. Avoid for now
Fantastic Condition & Friendly!
The course was absolutely stunning. I played 2 weeks prior to this visit and found the greens were a bit slow, sluggish and bobbly. Not to the fault of the staff however, as we were informed it was due to be top seeded the day we played after a lot of rain. This has made the course so much better, and at £15? One of the best value courses I’ve ever played. Cannot recommend enough!
Beaten by my Nephew and Uncle Kn..head
An excellent Sunday golf in Yorkshire with my nephew and brother-in-law. Very friendly reception and really helpful directions . Good challenging course with some clever dog legs. Whole course well maintained and bunkers a little challenging and well placed.
I had a stinker of around and lost the stableford to my nephew who had 39 pts and even uncle kn..head beat me, but still enjoyed the course.
Had a very enjoyable cider on the sun drench patio area overlooking the 18th green.
I would play the course again and recommend that you have around 👍🏌🏼♂️⛳️
The course I couldn't play
Only two out the three could play as I had pulled my back but I was unable to get a refund for round .
Golf now won't refund you if less than 24 hours and the course said they don't deal with the money.
So a round that cost me £90 that I couldn't play
Hidden Gem
Love this course, nice and mature course with plenty of challenging holes. Friendly club vibe and the staff are lovely.
Only watch out for golf now bookings is that they seem unable to manage it so when offering 4 ball and someone books a two ball the remaining spaces stay open, so either you end up with a 4 ball (which happened to us and was a laugh to be fair) or you have two groups with the same tee time. Just a watch out
Course was in excellent condition considering the rain of late. Told we could get out earlier than our pre booked time which was a bonus considering the weather forecast for later in the day. Very enjoyable round. Easy going as course is very flat but quite challenging. Clubhouse staff very friendly and helpful. Got caught in the rain on the last hole but it's only a par 3 so not in it long. Enjoyed a nice beer in the bar afterwards. All.in all a very enjoyable round. Will keep going back as it never disappoints.
Water logged and very, very slow play
After experiencing some rain over the past few days/weeks, parts of the course didn’t hold up well at all. Particularly the rough areas where the ball would plug and become lost. The walkways between holes were very unkept, muddy and not great to walk on. The tee boxes, even on par 4 and 5 holes, were covered in divots and very uneven. The pace of play of the 3 4-balls infront of us meant that two of us took over 4hours 30minutes to complete all 18 holes - even despite the scorecard stating that a 4ball should take no longer than 4 hours. Unfortunately a very poor course and a very poor round of golf has resulted in me not willing to return.
Excellent day out for early Spring conditions
The course has matured tremendously since the last time I played it 25 years ago. The Spring conditions made the course play longer, eg: slightly soft fairways, so not so much bounce or roll. The greens were good for the time of year, with no temporary greens in play. I would have no doubts about playing Scarthingwell again and not leave it so long, before returning. Definitely recommend.
Great course
This is the 2nd time I’ve played at Scarthingwell and it’s a great course in fantastic condition especially for the time of year. The clubhouse/bar is super welcoming too.
The only thing I’ve marked it down on is pace of play, although that being said I was playing alone and only caught up with the group in front on the 16th and by the 18th I joined their group of 3 to play the last hole. The group I joined I believe were members and even though I played that last hole awfully (let’s put it down to the pressure!) were lovely.
I’ll definitely be back.
Winter Golf (January)
The course was frozen. me and my group believe it should have been closed.
It was extremely difficult to put tees in the ground, divots couldn't be taken, also playing on temporary greens. If I was playing by myself or with one other person, we would have left the course, however as there were a few of us, we ploughed on.
The gentleman working in the clubhouse was great, really friendly and helpful. I have no doubt this course would be amazing in Summer and pretty challenging. However, playing temporary greens from front tee boxes, made some holes around 150-200 yards shorter, which made it pretty easy.
This is only a reflection of Winter Golf at Scarthingwell and not of Golf overall here.
Good course but strange attitude
Making each player come in to prove they are dress coded then giving them an up and down, whilst I understand the need to maintain rules, it’s off putting. And friends have told me about this rude approach before.
Get someone out on the first tee if you are so concerned!
Otherwise course is in great condition, good layout and overall well maintained.
Good course
Great course good lay out ! Hard holes , good greens , good pint afterwards
