Looking down the 18th Fairway Photo submitted by u314159793424 on 02/12/2020
Well thought out and hard course
The fairways and greens were good condition and decent speed. The course layout is well thought out but I think they overdone with bunkers though. Just played the course in June and the course looking great. Plenty of work being done on the greens and around the fairways and tee off areas. Some long par 4s and risk and reward par 5s. Scored 83 only on my second return with an eagle on the 5th par 5. Just became member so let's see what holds for the rest of the year.
Disappointing Day
Only played this course a couple if times before under Society conditions. Played today in very hot weather and I admit, was not hitting the ball at all well. However, the two things that will put me off playing Woolston Manor again was the poor conditions on most of the bridges over streams, of which there are a fair number. On a far number, the timbers were rotten to the extent that turned ankles are a distinct possibilities. The other gripe is the fact, according to the guy in the pro shop, that there are no reduced prices for Senior Citizens, of which I am one. This is the first time I have visited a club in the last 12 years where a concession for Seniors was not available......In short, for me, £25 was extremely poor value and, in future, will not be visiting again and am not able to recommend Woolston to anyone.
Nice To See The Improvements Continuing!
Last time we came we saw some improvements, we decided to play again this week and glad to see the same work has continued.
With all the rain some mud was to be expected, the 8th was still quite wet so hard to walk up but still playable. The 18th was fun chipping over the lake, with the lake one side and bunkers the other it's like coming up on an island green. The 3rd hole coming down between the lakes and the river was a little wet but still tidy.
Last time we came the bunkers were much better than they were in the past and its nice to see they've kept it up, although might need a bit more sand in some of them and some were holding water, but nothing too bad.
This is a tough course, but the mixture of holes and all the hazards make it a good test of your game!
Great To See Some Serious Improvements!
Been playing here maybe 1 or 2 times a year for a few years, and let's be honest it was really run down over the last few years. Messy and hard to play.
But a really pleasant surprise this time, considering the bad weather we've been having down here it was lovely to go out and see they've made some big course improvements! Yes there was some mud on the way round, and it looks like they've laid new paths to help get round the course. The 18th playing into the club house was really well presented, looked very pretty playing in towards the building and chipping over the lake.
Biggest improvement is the bunkers! a few still had some standing water in them, but we had a lot of rain the last few (months lol) but seeing that they've tidied them all up and really improved the sand and presentation for play was a big surprise.
This is a tough course, its long and there's basically water and sand everywhere, but in decent condition its a really good course to play!
Turned away no refund!
Very poor service
Booked online and when I got to the course they wouldn’t let me use my own electric trolley!
Offered a push trolley or carry the bag!
At 65 and a weakened back I don’t think so
No response to complaints
The course is rubbish anyway so don’t go there
Challenging course
Course in great condition, overly enjoyable round.
Nice tricky course - needs a shape up on the fairway and greens
Loved the set up with tricky holes.
But the fairways and putting greens are below par
Putting greens have scattered holes which makes a shot bump all over the place instead of being smooth.
Good value for money but was expecting better
Awfully maintained
Impossible to recommend as the course is in such poorly maintained condition - tee boxes are as bad as I’ve experienced, greens a small step up from fairways. A shame as the layout has potential.
Great course but unkept
Such a shame this great course is not being looked after. Grass in in every bunker & hardly any sand, tee boxes just bare.
The holes themselves are amazing & well laid out, just looks like the course needs some money spent on it & some TLC to get it back to amazing.
Food was tasty, staff friendly
Avoid
Course is unloved and neglected. Bunkers and greens were in appalling condition. Pro shop was locked. Hardly anyone on the course and I’m not surprised. It seems everyone was at the driving range next door. Sooner the course is sold to developers and put out of its misery the better!
Gone down hill
Used to love this course. Testing, lots of green side bunkers and lovely 18th back to the clubhouse.
However the course has fallen in to disrepair. The final straw were the greens which were like fairways. Totally unputtable.
Won’t be playing there again until they have got the course up to scratch
Jungle Golf
Organised a mid to low hcp 4 ball at WM last Sunday. Scene was set, sunshine was plentiful, spirits were high, water at the ready… and for £18 , we thought we had grabbed a bargain
First tee box looked a little tired and off the fairways were deep rough to the right.. little did we know this was only just the beginning.
We persevered for a few holes but you can see maintenance around the course was non-existent.
A few drives that were straight were actually lost as the fairways had old cut grass that hadn’t been collected, as a result a few balls were lost to the undergrowth.
We continued but spirits had started to dampen like a dull December morning, everywhere had thick uncut grass that wouldn’t look out of place in the amazon.. I should have left my 60degree wedge had home and packed a machete instead.
The greens were so think they resembled a thick woven carpet that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a residential retirement home such was the depth of the shag pile grass.
To top it all, we found ourselves on the back end of a high hcp club competition on the 13th (we had already been out for nearly 4 hours already) so decided to walk off. Never have I walked off a course before.
I would’ve asked for a refund but the pro shop was shut, however I would suggest they keep the money and invest in a lawnmower and more staff.
Such a shame as this has the potential to be a lovely course, but seems its being run into disrepair.
I definitely wont be going back and feel there are better courses within a 5 mile radius.
Standard has dropped
Last two times I've been the course has been in a poor condition. First time nothing was cut, staff tried lying and said that we went out too early which us hardly an excuse as you shouldn't provide early tee times If that's the case but it was actually due to thier machines being broke. Second time again early, they left the sprinklers on, alot of the greens were saturated and I had to turn some of the sprinklers off myself, they shouldn't provide early tee times if the staff are too lazy to get up on time.
The only way is up
The course layout has always been great, Having played the course when it first opened with superb greens and bunkers it needs work. It was sad to see rubble dumped and rubbish bins overflowing with empty beer bottles .This could be one of the best courses in Essex
Booked via tee times so got a reduced rate which worked out around £15. Can’t complain about anything at that price.
Staff were very helpful and friendly. Made to feel very welcome. Clubhouse was very modern with a terrace and swimming pool outside.
The course wasn’t in good condition in my opinion. Greens very bumpy, tee boxes a mess, quite a few stones in the bunkers.
This was my first time playing this course. i can imagine that this was a brilliant course to play a few years ago but it needs a lot of TLC.
