A Thinker’s Course

First time playing Atlanta National. I’m not sure what the previous reviews were looking for but this course was worth the drive.

ClubCorp had a “200 yards from the clubhouse” rule when I worked there and it looks like it was still in effect. The area surrounding the clubhouse was in great shape! The practice area was a very good size with multiple putting and chipping greens and the range tees were in good shape considering the rain.

The golf course itself is like any other “management” course with some small spots with thinning turf. The tee boxes were in great shape, the fairways, for the most part, were in very good shape, and the greens were nice with minimal ball marks and very little dead spots from old ball marks. Putts rolled smooth and held their lines very well.

There are several blind tee shots but nothing a peek at your GPS won’t fix, (I highly recommend The Grint app!!). There weren’t a lot of driver holes for me, (16 handicap), and a decent 3/5 wood will leave you inside 150 yards on most par 4s.

All in all worth the drive and the money, in my opinion! I would recommend this course.

Course with great layout and in excellent condition

This is an extremely well designed course that is pretty challenging. I can't see ever getting bored playing here.

Dogtrack

Don't waste your time or money; back in the day this was supposed to be an awesome track; now it's just a dog track. Greens aerated/bumpy; a lot of places around the greens dug up and just left open; no sod replaced. Fairways have numerous complete dead spots; uneven; sinkholes; etc.

DO NOT waste your time or money; spent $120 as a guest and was upset the super unfriendly person in the golf shop didn't volunteer any information about course conditions; just took the money and had a sour face the whole time.

Cart kid was super nice..

They have way too high opinion of themselves; I wouldn't play here again if they offered it for free.

Poor private course

I played this course as part of the Clubcorp network. The description indicated a well kept challenging course. Instead I found very mediocre conditions on a course that was extremely difficult to play.

The rough was not overseeded. In addition to the brown turf (which in of itself would be OK),, had numerous bald spots and many areas of muddy conditions. The layout had seven holes with water hazards across the entire fairway, 5 of which were blind to approach shots. Many other shots were over raised fairways so that landing areas were blind. Often the fairways were banked so that even if tee shots were hit in the fairway, they would kick into the rough and be unseen from the tee box. We spent a very long time trying to find balls the were hit relatively straight.

Quite disappointing

I was very excited to get a Monday tee time when so many private clubs are closed mondays. Ultimately, it was a disappointment though. There were some nice views, but the conditions are not good. The bunkers are hard pan, the fairways aren’t in great shape and I wasn’t a fan of the layout. A couple 90 degree doglegs, some quirky holes, etc. Most holes you could stand on the tee and take a picture with your phone and it would look very pretty. Then when you go and play it, you see it is pretty from far, but far from pretty.

Great layout with conditions left to be desired

Atlanta National is a fantastic golf course layout and has some incredible amenities. It boasts quite an expansive practice facility with multiple putting greens. However, the course conditions weren’t exactly what I would consider lined up with the quality of course that this course is. It hosts a Symmetra Tour event each year around the time I played here yet these greens looked like they were still recovering from the most recent aeration. Overall, I enjoyed my round here and I’m hoping to play it again in the future but I know the conditions can be improved in a lot of areas before that next visit.

But with all of that said, the course can be tricky with a handful of blind tee shots. Course knowledge is critical on those holes. Pete Dye really loves his railroad ties and island/peninsula greens. Those were the prettiest holes of the course but can be intimidating nonetheless. If you get a chance to play this private course, don’t pass it up. It’s a fun test!

shocking conditions

played this place as a guest a few weeks ago and the conditions were terrible. considering this is a private club you would expect much better. When I mentioned the conditions to other members they say "it's been terrible for some time", "it's not because of the weather". went into grill after play and there was no food available. what type of private course has no food for their members at 400 pm on a weekend?
This place is owned by one of the large consolidators and it clearly looks that way. only got thing about this place is you can walk and no tee times needed.

Cold Day of golf but fantastic course!

Atlanta National is one of many great golf courses in Milton, Georgia. I’d argue that Milton is one of the best cities to be a golfer in Georgia. That being said, Atlanta National might be the best all around course. The clubhouse is massive and absolutely beautiful. It has everything you want in a clubhouse; large locker room, bar and restaurant, and wel stocked pro shop with friendly staff. The practice facilities are second to none. A double sided driving range with multiple putting greens and chipping areas to really hone your game makes you appreciate the club before you even begin your round.

The course itself is in above average condition for January. You know this course will look beautiful come spring. Pete dye designed the course but I didn’t realize it until we came to the par-4 14th and saw his signature angled railroad ties running down the entire right side of the fairway. Despite the typical Pete dye design difficulty, the layout is very manageable and a lot of fun. If you don’t think so, just ask the ladies on the Symmetra Tour who play an event here every year!

Pete Dye strikes again!

Full disclosure up front - I am not a fan of course designer Pete Dye. I've played four of his courses now and he just isn't for me. This course is much like the others of his I've played i.e. tricked out with all sorts of looming disasters even on what would under normal circumstances be good shots. I can certainly understand why some might revel in Pete's vision of what a golf course should look and play like and I'm sure if I played this course enough times I would eventually figure out where best to hit the ball and where you certainly can't hit it.

I played the course as a guest of Amy, the wonderful Membership Director, obviously with a view to possibly joining the club. Although the course was not to my particular liking, the experience as a whole at Atlanta National was first class. This is a great facility with a high end and comfortable clubhouse and a very welcoming and professional staff. For those who enjoy the sort of challenges a course like this one presents, I think you could do a lot worse than joining Atlanta National. The membership deals on offer at the moment are very compelling and had I been more enamored with the actual course, I would not have hesitated to join.

Atlanta national is top notch

I was privileged to play Atlanta National with a member and really enjoyed the course a lot. The day I played it rained about 2 inches and we all had on rain gear however the course was in great shape. The greens were fast and many water hazards. The first hole is tough because you have in a 100 yard wedge shot over a creek. Personally my favorite hole is 16 a drivable par 4 with water in the back. 17 is nice too with a green that reminds me of TPC sawgrass. With this being a private facility the practice area was great. The clubhouse was designed well and the food here is amazing. If your ever invited to play Atlanta National please say yes
