Vernon Hills Golf Course - 9 Holes
The Good: This northern suburban 9-hole muny has no thrills or frills, but is a decent option if you need a quick 2-hour round. Par 34 layout is a hacker's paradise, except there are no Par 5's to go for broke. Instead there are several demanding, long Par 4's (especially the closing holes). The two Par 3's are the best holes on the course. Fairway conditions are pretty good and greens hold well. Clubhouse is nice for a 9-hole facility with good pro shop. Make sure to stop at the "10th Hole" for some drinks or a burger after the round.
The Bad: Rough and tee-box conditions are to be desired. Amenities are sorely lacking: no driving range (but there a few individual hitting net stations) and a pathetic putting green with two holes. Limited on-course amenities and service. There are several holes that have a crossing creek that either forces the average golfer to try to carry 250 yards or you're forced to hit long iron off almost every tee. A little overpriced for the area at around $30 with cart for 9 holes during off-season.
The Verdict: Vernon Hills is for you if you don't worry about any amenities or experience. It's all about getting a few fun holes in and avoiding the "riff-raff" of an upscale club.
Best Hole: The downhill, short Par 3 #7 is fun. Can range from 3 different clubs with the largest green on the course.
plays great during weekdays
Good course to walk, freindly staff, good hamburgers
nice cold beers.
Great Place to Play Nine
I highly recommend stopping by VHGC (aka The Muni) if you are looking to get a quick nine holes in after work or on a busy weekend. The course is in solid condition and with water on 6 or 7 of the nine holes and narrow/mature fairways, it offers a good challenge for experienced golfers and experience for those still picking up the game. Very good pace of play and the GM and staff are friendly and happy to have you out at the course. The pro shop offers the basics but the food and drink deals are best in the area. Even could be a good go to spot just for a burger and beer in the clubhouse without playing.
Clubhouse Staff is HORRENDOUS
Lord help you if you ever run into the lady who runs the pro shop- The most rude, mean and intimidating, unkind person I've ever met at any course. If you have some sort of deal time, she will make you feel as if you did something wrong. In any event this needs to change. She managed to ruin our whole round by making us wait till the EXACT minute of our tee time even though there wasn't a soul on the course. We ended up rushing the whole round just so we could get out of that place. The course itself is decent, greens are nice, but a few holes that should play as Par 5s, are par 4s, and unnecessarily challenging. Par 3 on the hill is nice. Other than that, I won't be returning to this course, only because I do not want to be face to face with the same lady who seems to be the one running the show. And note to her if she ever reads this: Quit yelling at the poor course dog because of its barking, and excitement to greet the players, he is not doing any harm whatsoever.
Greens kept in great shape
Very surprised how challenging this course played. Narrow, a lot of water hazards and excellent greens. Pace of play was also very good. I would Definitely come back
Nice 9 hole course
Course was in good shape. Played in just over 2 hours with a foursome.
Average course/below average manager
Vernon Hills Golf Course is a bit pricey for what it offers. It offers a standard lay out with a few decisions to make off the tee with water in play on at least 5 drives. I played with a friend before heading over to Conway Farms for the BMW. It was a convenient location in relation to Conway Farms. (Just 4-5 miles west)
The course was in good shape. Perhaps the thing that has me not to crazy about returning would be the guy in the pro-shop when we arrived. First off, he was extremely rude and he didn't inform us about the girls high school competition teeing off 2-hours after our tee time until we were on the 5th green with about 50-minutes to spare. We weren't too concerned about getting the round in but the way he presented himself was very rude and not inviting. That being said, maybe he was having a bad day, but I won't be returning there to play golf anytime soon.
Looks inviting--from a distance. Up close, this place is better suited for cattle
This could really be an interesting and challenging 9 holer. Traditional muni nature of the layout with tight tree-lined fairways, creeks, ponds, bridges, and fairway bunkers lend a quality of character to this venue. But there are weeds everywhere! They're green, but they're ugly and the fairway landing areas should all be labeled "ground under repair". Only saving feature--the greens, which, though small, are fast, undulating, and tricky, but fair.
GOOD BEGINEER FOR THE KIDS
NICE COURSE ACTUALLY TOOK SOME PICTURES OF A HAWK THAT WAS SITTING NEXT TO THE FIRST HOLE; IT WAS CHALLENGING ENOUGH FOR AN INTERMEDIATE PLAYER
Easy course; good confidence booster!
If you are lucky enough you can get through the 9 in less than two hours. The course is kept somewhat well, but its far from a pretty sight (you are not one with nature here). It's also really loud, its right next to a train station that is frequent from 3-7pm. Weigh your options wisely before playing here... but if you want a easy and potentially quick, casual, cheap nine; look no further.
Best 9 hole course I ever played
Course has a creek that runs through several holes which always seems to be exactly where your going to hit. Fairways are somewhat narrow which makes it challenging. Great par 3 hole you walk up stairs to the top of a hill to tee off with water between tee and green. Can't wait to play it again! Also club house has great food.
Decent course
Good 9 hole course, not too crowded, staff is friendly.
Great Course Good Price
Easy 9 hole course, great price well maintained. Love this course.
Great for a quick 9!
This 9 hole muni course seems innocuous enough. It's simple, tucked away in a corner of Vernon Hills, inexpensive fees, etc. But then you stand on the first tee and get a taste of what is to come...little streams that force you to manage your distance off the tee, trees and fence lines along the fairways, and relatively challenging uphill approach shots.
The course itself is in decent shape, and best of all, if you are a single and can get up early on a weekday, you can play 9 by yourself in less than 2 hours. Once the kids and old folks get out there, all bets are off. It's an inexpensive muni course though, so deal with it.
The postage stamp par 3 is a nice hole. A few cool little holes makes for a nice, quick little 9.
the course is good for all levels of players
I went on Thanksgiving with my79 year old dad, brother and two nephews. We had a great afternoon. The pro on duty is super friendly and I love the course mascot. She is one of the nicest golf dogs I've ever met!
Great 9 hole course, good conditions, water creates challenges
This course is a nice 9 hole course. I play it often and it is always in great shape. Tony (I think that's the owner's name), is always there and is always friendly and helpful. The greens are in great shape and fairways are pretty neat. There is water on 7 of the 9 holes, which creates a challenging round. It is somewhat of a hidden gem and a great value for the price. I reccomend this course for beginners to skilled golfers. Enjoy!
Short course
This course has no idea how to treat their customers. They act as if they are doing "us" a favor by letting us play there. Course and greens were in good shape. Unfortunately after being treated so poorly by staff there the very few times that I have played there, I do not recommend this place to anyone. If you work in a place that deals with customers, please have some good customer service. There are plenty of courses, and I believe that you can stand out with good service.
