Rude regulars
Everything excellent even the 2 gentleman that we got paired with...but 4 hole some of the regulars decided to drive up to us and yell at us for hitting a ball that was a foot out of bounds and told us to read the sign very rudely and so I read the sign and it said NO CARTS not no hitting balls that are out of bounds...so she stuck her foot in her mouth and drove away other than that it was a fun day
Fun course, great value with Golfnow
Lake Carroll is part of the Lake Carroll home owner's association. Most of the holes have doglegs and many have elevated greens. There are 4 tee boxes, nicely spaced for different ability levels. The greens are mostly large and well kept. There are plenty of bunkers, grass and sand around greens and fairways.
The fairways were a little thin, but lack of rain is probably the reason. My only suggestion would be to edge the traps. They've gotten rather flat. A sharp tool and a couple of days could fix that.
Though it's an hour away, I look for great Golfnow deals and feel lucky to play this fun course at such a low rate.
Hot n muggy but fun
1st timer at Lake Carrol. It was a very warm day so pace was good (not real busy). There are quite a few blind shots but it is a beautiful course. Could use a little wider fairway on the longer holes. If your a straight and accurate golfer this is the place for you. And if your more into sunny beaches do worry they have plenty of sand there for you.
Excellent atmosphere
Greeted by staff as we arrived. They were extremely appreciative of our group driving in from quite a distance away. Gave us an early start of 20 minutes. The course is in outstanding condition with numerous challenging par 5’s. Anxious to repeat play at this course! Again…..well worth the long drive to play here
A Wonderful Fun Interesting Golf Course
$25 green including cart....a steal and amazing. Lake Carroll is definitely worth seeking out and traveling to play. It's pretty much in the middle of no where - NW Illinois. Heck just skip the incredibly overpriced overpriced Galena resort tracks and play this and other courses in NW general area....PrairieView, Park Hills 36, Freeport Club, Woodbine Bend, Wolf Hollow, etc, etc. Lake Carroll isn't very walkable...some rather long drives between a few of the holes as it winds through a housing development with only about 1/2 the houses built. Housing isn't overly intrusive except on the front nine. Wonderfully maintained with the exception of some of the green side surrounds.....surprising was the amount of pine trees and pine needles which makes growing grass on that kind of soil a tad more difficult. Some very well designed holes....and a fine assortment of doglegs in both directions. They have repaved several cart paths - were in process of doing one while I was there.....and it's very obvious that grounds crew/superintendent are on top of every aspect....just admire the stripes in the two pictures I've attached. Solid course that really keeps your interest. 4.5 stars......easily a $40 to even $50 value in my book and could easily charge at least $60-$70 course near Chicago. Highly recommended.
Lake Carroll
Very nice Venue. All facilities are very well maintained including: The course , the driving range , and a unique practice area in addition to the range which allow for a little on course type warm up.Excellent Club House which offers a bar and very good lunch and dinner menu’s to go with daily specials. Was really impressed with the condition of greens and fairways given an extended dry period in the area. There is a lot to like about Lake Carroll. Highly recommend it.
Okay
Our experience was average. Probably wouldn't drive the distance we did to play again.
Two negatives were,
1. we only saw a cart person one time, on hole 2, and never saw her again. We were extremely dehydrated by 14.
2. The greens were really rough on the back 9.
Two positives,
1. The staff was very kind and professional.
2. The price.
