Crying Shame what Great Life has done to this once prestigious Course
As a member, I have to say it's shameful the level of neglect that's been given to this course. 4 to 5 yrs ago they underwent a re sodding of many of the front 9 holes. To this day, there a still visible stripes in the fairways where new Zoysia was laid but apparently scarcely watered. You are almost better off in the rough. Shouldn't have to hit off dirt when you stripe one down the middle. My advice, do it right. Close the front 9 for a whole season. Spend some $ and get the sod professionally done. And for Pete's sake, give it a drink of water everyday.
Goat Ranch
It's a terrible shame that a Donald Ross designed course can be neglected to the point that this course has arrived to .Fairways , tee boxes ,and greens are in terrible condition . There was no drinking water available on the course on a 90* day . Staff in the clubhouse and on the course were rude and non obligatory .
Nice course layout but terrible pace of play
The course was in good shape and the weather was perfect a 70 degrees in February in Kansas. The only problem was the pace of play and behavior of other players. With no marshals on the course the first tee box was a mess, we actually had a group play through while we were waiting on the group in front of to play their shots, we were hit into no less than 6 times throughout the round that lasted over 5 hours. For being advertised as a country club you expect a certain level of etiquette and knowledge from the others golfers that just wasn't there. I really enjoy the layout of the course and think it is fun to play but I will never go back there on a weekend.
Good layout, poor condition
Greens were smooth but slow. Lots of slope to some greens. Very good layout, some very challenging par threes and fours but the fairways were in very bad condition and shaggy!
Donald Ross wouldn't be happy
It's a shame that this venerable old course designed by arguably the game's greatest architect has fallen into such disrepair. A great course design that requires precise shotmaking to unbelievably small greens is wasted due to the very poor condition of the course. Surprisingly, though, the greens were in pretty decent shape.
Decent 18
Overall it was fun. The course was extremely dry but cannot expect anything less this time of year.. I must say there were a lot of walkers so the pace at times was slow and would not allow us to play through. I'm sure it was a one time thing. Overal a decent 18 holes for Topeka.
