Getting Too Old
Played here at the end of last year and had a cart. Didn't remember how hilly this course is. No carts this time and it's too much of a walk for older people. I made it just fine, but I would never do it again. Fine old Donald Ross course in the heart of Newton. The property value must be nine figures !!! Great, old style, throwback course that's fun to play. Not overly long with plenty of interesting holes and elevation changes. The clubhouse was closed so it's unfair to judge the amenities. 18th hole is a great finishing hole over the long water hazard.
Hilly Muni
Bring your hard hat. The holes are on top of one another (a few tee boxes have netting surrounding them). It's a very hilly course and not always in a fair or interesting way. There are a couple of interesting holes (more-so on the back) and it is typically a good deal. Pace of play was good, but if it wasn't ten minutes from my house, there is no way I'd make a return trip here.
Built on a hill and short
This course is very frustrating due to the fact it is built on a hill but overall is is a pretty good municipal course. Many slanted fairways on the back half of the front 9. The back 9 is much flatter and more enjoyable. The course is also very short, less than 5400 yards. There are a good amount of drivable greens and there are 5 par 3s. Conditions are pretty good for a municipal course. I typically walk this course because it is short but it may be a difficult walk for older people due to the hill it is built on. I would say the price is pretty fair for what you get.
A very short typical Donald Ross course.
First I’d like to say that even with all of the covid restrictions the staff here was extremely accommodating and friendly. The course itself is very short with most of the par 4’s being under 300 yards. The elevation changes make for some great views and scenic course shots. They do have the typical Donald Ross elevated greens with hard cuts that will make a shot missing the green by five feet leave you with a 20-25 foot next shot. Condition was good though a couple of the tee boxes were chewed up. If you want to play a Ross course at a great price this is the place.
It's in Pretty Good Shape!
Just as the title indicates...Boston's closest public course is in fine shape for the amount of play it receives. The layout is modified from original but there remains some decent holes to make it interesting. Lot's of elevation and hilly terrain will make it not quite a walk in the park...Thanks for the effort to make this place a fun experience...they also are doing a great job compared to other courses protecting staff and players from Covid-19.
Great price, value and for all skill levels
Staff was super friendly, Suitable for all skill sets, great price for a full, maintained 18 hole course just outside of Boston! Short course and walkable but a cart always helps! No real prep area - putting green or even open space to get some swings in. Well maintained given the brutal heat and drought conditions of the area.
Great City Course
My girlfriend and I played for the first time and had a great experience. Pro shop employees were super nice. Pace of play was great. There were some challenging holes and some easier ones. The layout is a little confusing so make sure you grab a scorecard with the map.
Poor layout
The course is poorly laid out and stacked so tightly they need to post restrictions like "Iron's only" from tee, or "warnings you are not allowed to go for the green" because if you miss you'd hit the club house and people down below. The course is in good condition but also attracts a lot of hackers. I had hackers hitting balls at me while I was on the next tee box because they couldn't hit the right fairway on the par 3 in the back nine. I have many friends that are decent intermediate golfers that love this course probably because it's price. To be fair, I would play this course again just to see if I could lower my handicap-index.
cool place. odd layout
great course, kind of short with lots of reachable greens in 2. narrow fairways and lots of elevation. the front nine is much more difficult. don’t get lost the signage in places is odd. use the map and ask. nice people working there.
