the price was right
this was the 2nd 18 of the day, the price was right and the pace of play was perfect. Didn't see anyone until the last two holes
The Legend and. River are a Great Combo
Perfect companion to Cedar River at Shanty. Conditions were excellent and we found everything about the course to be a great experience.
Highly recommend playing this as a match with Cedar River at Shanty.
One of the best
The Legend at Shanty Creek Resorts is always a fun and challenging course to play. The beautiful vistas of Lake Bellaire on the third and fourth holes never fail to impress. Though we had a bargain rate this time, it is worth the usual cost of $45 to $60. While you are there, also get a round at Cedar River, Hawk's Eye, and if you are up for a real challenge, the Chief.
Outstanding Value
The course was in GREAT shape for May, which made it an outstanding value for the price! The fairways were lush and the greens receiptive and rolled true. The staff was friendly as always and helpful when one of our players lost a wallet.
Top notch course
This course is in outstanding condition from tee to green. The fairways and greens are pristine. The course offers a wide variety of holes, with elevation changes, water, and spectacular views, including several views of Lake Bellaire. While challenging, it is very fair to even the average golfer. The greens are fast with plenty of break, but the ball rolls true. Overall, the course is a real pleasure to play, especially as the Fall colors come out.
The staff was not participate friendly or welcoming, however; especially the young cart attendant at the start of the round. They could use a little customer service training in my opinion.
The Legend lives up to its name
Golfed The Legend at Shanty Creek for the first time October 7, 2015.
Course is absolutely beautiful and very fun to play.
We had the course to ourselves with a tee time @ 12:30pm on a Wednesday afternoon.
Each hole brought a new challenge for an average golfer like me.
Through Golfnow.com we got a really reasonable rate. Fall is the perfect time to play a course of this stature.
Great Course Up North
Very good condition. True Greens. Real nice course to play - can be a little tough if you don't use the fairways!
Outstanding Conditions
Other than the pace of play (which stunk.....slow playing 1st timer/resort guests) the Legend was in great shape. Tees, fairways, traps well maintained and the greens were smooth and quick. High handicappers will shoot 20 shots higher easily.....very challenging scenic track routed like a figure eight that's held up well over time....with impeccable conditions!
nice, but staff sucks
The course is well maintained. It is challenging. However, we were behind a foursome that had 3 vacant holes in front of them and the rangers would do nothing about it. We played as a threesome, so I realize we were quicker, but really..... it was ridiculous. Over 5 hours for a threesome is a bit much. Would not recommend unless you have a foursome, unfortunately . The ranger made every excuse in the book but failed to do his job.
Course condition was great
One of the nicest courses I've played in northern Michigan, I was pretty wet but it has rained a day before. Tough course for 1st play
Great value on Golfnow. com
We played on a Friday afternoon and the course was in great shape considering all the play for the summer. Greens rolled true, but some seemed slower than others. Only saw the bevcart 2 times for 18 holes - both times on the back side.
Great deal!
Nice conditions. Greens roll true and balls stick.
Bunkers are the worst I've seen
Greens were slow and the bunkers are filled with rocks/gravel, not sand. Our foursome waited on every single shot. No ranger on the course. Schuss Mountain and Cedar River are a WAY better value. I will not be returning to the Legend.
great track
I have played the legend many times and it is always in great condition. Not long but a good test of golf. Views are amazing, especially during the fall colors. Unfortunately this round took 5 hours and 10 minutes to complete. Saw a ranger on hole 6 and then not again the rest of the day. This was disappointing because he talked to us on 6 about the backup ahead and was going to get the course moving.
Amazing
Greens kicked my butt but the course was awesome. Beautiful vistas on every hole. Great elevation changes. A true joy and challenge to play. Must play before you die
My favorite at Shanty Creek
I'm probably among the minority that considers The Legend my favorite course at Shanty Creek. I love its 1980s architecture. Some of its narrow fairways will make the grip-it-and-rip-it crowd used to modern designs a bit squeamish. The endless parade of elevated tees and greens makes scoring tough. Many holes bend or dogleg through the deep woods, forcing players to choose their angle of attack. The only knock on the Legend would be the tricky par-4 second hole. It's just an awkward tee shot uphill over wetland that comes too early in the round. I'd like to see the tees built up or the hole transformed into a par 3. But all is forgiven on the fourth and fifth tees, where the commanding views of Lake Bellaire help everybody forget their score.
Best golf in northern MI
Blown away by how gorgeous this course is. Elevated greens and tees throughout. Awesome view. Great playability. Difficult greens. Breathtaking views of torch lake and bellies. Truly a pleasure to play.
only one complaint
Loved this course. Great layout, wide fairways and you can score well if playing good. My only complaint (at least for the times we played it) was the pin locations. Most cups were cut in ridiculous spots. Tops of knobs in the green, bottom of slopes. It was almost impossible to get the ball close even when you hit a good shot. Other wise, the course was great. We all loved the layout.
Consistent quality
Played the Legend after playing Cedar River a few years ago. This course was consistent with the quality of the Shanty Creek courses and was consistent with other Palmer designed courses in difficulty and challenge.
While the course is aesthetically very pleasing it is also made more difficult by the frequent elevation changes, rolling fairways and uneven lies. Ultimately, when you reach the greens they are fast with many undulations. The course is quite difficult but worth a round - just be sure to bring your A game.
A great golf experience
We recommend this course highly for all golfers visiting this part of our country. Very good conditions, interesting layout, alar a fair price!
