Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Minnesota (2015 #5)
Reviews
The course is in excellent shape!
First time I've encountered a frost delay this year, but the starter/superintendent handled it great and were very organized. They even flipped us a couple range tokens for having to wait.
This course has great layout
Nice course. No GPS although they have the screen on every cart. Apparently they didn't pay their bill according to a maintenance guy. Lot of blind shots. You need to use their yardage book and tips in order to know where to hit.
Great layout
The only thing I was not happy with was the grass clippings everywhere. Very messy, seems like the course just got cut and hadnt been cut for a week prior.
Don't Play Early Morning
We had the first tee time at 7am and the pro shop worker, who seemed to be high school age, was late and showed up right at 7am. There was a chance of rain and asked him about the radar, which he responded, "I have no idea, I literally just got here." The carts weren't out and ready and they were wet from the night before and not wiped down. Their website boasts about having great carts with GPS and digital score keeping, etc. We got to the first hole and the GPS didn't turn on so we called the club house. The worker told us that the GPS contract was just canceled last week so they don't work anymore. I just looked at their website and the cart features are clearly listed under a tab called "Amazing Golf Carts." We did not receive any reduction in greens fees even though we were expecting GPS carts. The course itself was beautiful but I'm afraid it's being run into the ground.
Challenging
I like the course because it's tough. The course was in great shape, even after a lot of rain. A great variety of holes. Lots of blind shots though, so be careful. It's more fun if you've played it before so you know what to expect.
Excellent first time
I went with a friend and were the first ones there for the day. We were greeted by the club employee who asked if we wanted to get on early. Very fun, I've never played such a green challenged course. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys the time and effort put into a course..
Challenging Course
Challenging course that forces you to make decisions (go for it or play it safe). Hardest part was finding the next tee box. Beautiful location on the river.
Beautiful course
I thought the course was absolutely beautiful, but there could be some improvements on the following: Had a 7:27am tee time, but the starter should be there, giving directions to all players before the start of round. This was our first time there and we could have used some rules on the cart path and perhaps some information on hole 9, as some rearranging was done, and was little confusing. Carts are equipped with GPS, awesome. Utilize that starter, as it really adds to a persons round that day and (Mississippi Dunes), have it all at your finger tips. Need a few more signs perhaps to get to next hole. Hole 15, in particular. Other than than, the course is beautiful and challenging too. I will come back as now I will know the layout better! I only rated Staff Friendliness poor as I thought there needs to be more engagement starting players on their round and someone around to guide those that haven't been there before. Staff was very friendly at end of round inside clubhouse.
Mississippi Dunes
Course has always been a challenging course due to it's crowned greens. A lot of break in the most of the greens which normally roll fast as well. Short game is a must. Fairways can also prove to be challenging with lay ups etc. Course is being changed a lot this year with. Hole 1 is now hole 10 with a few other switches. Playable area of the course was in great condition with some construction going in between holes. It appears they are trying to open it up a bit by removing trees and expanding landing areas from the tee box. Still one of my favorite courses and reccomend checking it out. Bring your short game!
Funky change of hole order
Course was in nice shape. Grain makes a huge difference in putting. Some of the greens are a bit small for the undulation they have. Most greens are elevated and with domed edges can cause a bit of back and forth for a less experienced player. On the day we played the back tee markers were mostly up with the white tees. I have rarely seen this course set up to play 6600 yards as advertised. I believe it was playing between 6200-6300. Still very challenging tee shots and a couple new tee boxes made it a fun outing. I was a bit annoyed by the new hole order. My garmin still had the old order of the holes so I would have to search for them or rely on the carts gps, Which I often found myself unable to use it because the cart would shut down if we were in the rough on the opposite side of the fairway as the cart path. Still had a fun time and will go back. I hope they can fix the gps problem and widen the driveable zones on the course. I think $50/cart is the absolute most I would pay to play here. I would play more often at $35.
Very difficult course, unusual layout
This course is seemingly designed to mimic the difficulty of a PGA tournament course. It has several crested greens with shaved grass on the slopes coming off the greens. On several chips onto the greens, the ball rolled back off and down the hill to where the chip was made. Very frustrating for someone playing it the first time! Also, the course layout of 6 par 3's, 6 par 4's and 6 par 5's is unusual. The scorecards only list the yardages from the championship tees, and don't have diagrams to show the layout of the holes. The carts have GPS, so that helps, but it is hard to know where to hit drives without some indication on the scorecard of where the hole is. I'm guessing that the course has recently been remodeled, as my personal GPS (one year old Garmin) showed different pars and distances for some holes than what they actually are. The course should coordinate with the GPS providers to update the current course configurations. I don't think I would be interested in playing there again.
Better than last time
I hadn't played Mississippi Dunes in a long time. The last time I played there the course was just in decent shape and the staff wasn't exactly friendly. This time out the course was in great shape, the staff was very nice (especially Bruce the starter) and I will be back. The only problem I had with the course was the lay out. Watch the markers for the next hole, otherwise you'll find yourself at the wrong tee box and setting everybody back a bit. One other thing, the par 3's play longer than they're listed at.
MS Dunes
Interesting track. Greens were very difficult. There is room to drive the ball. Golf Digest had it 4.5 stars, I would mark it down to 4 stars just because of some work that was going on and some clean up that needed to be done.
Better signage would have been helpful as the course has an unusual layout, Got totally confused at a couple places where the cart paths criss crossed.
Tough course
Frequent blind shots made this course difficult for the first time player. Fairways were like carpet, bunkers and other areas could use some work. The greens were in great shape but difficult.
Want a 5+ hour round? Play here!
MS Dunes is a known wedding venue. Therefore, you're going to find yourself playing behind a group of wedding attendees swinging grand dad's persimmon clubs from time to time. We had the privilege of doing just that. Now don't get me wrong, I am ok with that if the pace is fine. When it's not, then I have a problem. Our day started by seeing the entire wedding party heckling each other on the first tee. Again, I like it if they play at pace. During our check-in discussion with the pro shop we were informed that the group had spent "a lot of money" at the venue for the day. Did they rent the whole golf course? Cause if not, the amount of money to me was irrelevant. Front nine in about 2 1/2 hours. We weren't directly behind the group, so we weren't able to see what was holding up the course until the back nine. At the turn, we got two dogs and two sports drinks -$18. Really? These better be phenomenal - they were not good. At the 10th tee, the group ahead of us played through the last wedding group. Here's where we saw what was going on - they are playing a scramble! Back nine took 2:45. MS Dunes by the numbers: round length - 5:15. Number of rangers we saw - 0. Number of beverage carts we saw - 0. I will say that the course was in good condition, and it is challenging. But the lack of making sure all guests have a great experience (and not just those who spend "a lot of money") ultimately puts this course in the been there won't do that again category. Skip this place and play one of the many other fantastic courses in the Twin Cities area.
Outstanding Course and Value
I thoroughly enjoyed Mississippi Dunes and would recommend it without hesitation for any skill level level.golfer. I found the course challenging, fair and maintained at the level of a private club. The staff was courteous and the pace of play excellent.
Fathers Day Outing
Was a great day for an outing. Course was excellent. Challenging especially given none of us have played in years. Would have been nice to seen a cart person driving around offering cold refreshments. Overall, we will be back again and making this an annual tradition.
Impressive all around
Hospitality, course quality and well kept facilities, a plus beautiful view of the river. Had a fantastic time, thanks.
Fun course
You'll have a fun time playing this track. I thought it was a pretty scenic course and well maintained. Grounds crews were working pretty hard out there.
Fun course
Nice course only 16 miles south of St. Paul. The staff is very respectful and considerate. I went on a Wednesday afternoon with practically no one on the course. Greens were a bit quick and putted very true. Fairways were in good shape as well. You get a workout just walking to the greens as most are elevated. Sort of like an upside down bowl. Will be back.
