Another apology
We have been long-term members 10+ years. Today again, someone interrupted our play. This has happened every single time we have played this year. Because there is league every night and the course is packed full on weekends there is not many available times slots for play. Nasty players that get in cheap ruin the game, there is absolutely NO benefit to being a member. I have been EXTREMELY disappointed these last couple of years. We continually get apologies from the staff (they are great) but it just can not make up for what we have experienced. We had such a bad experience in June, we did not play for a month and it just continues.
Wide Open Spaces, Fast Greens
Southern Hills Golf Course features wide open fairways that challenge you to pull out the driver and let her rip. This is fine if you hit the fairways, which are generally smooth, gently undulating, and fast rolling. Miss a fairway and you run the risk of losing your ball in the rough, which is just high enough to swallow the ball, or in the “natural” grass areas which will make your ball disappear. At least twice when a member of our group hit a ball in the rough we were able to find three or four other balls, but not the right one. The greens are fast (when we played, a course employee told us that they were stimping at about 11½), most of them are slightly elevated above the fairway level, and most of them slope from back to front. The course employee warned us to leave our approach shots below the hole, and he was right. Downhill putts that missed the hole were almost impossible to stop until several feet past the hole. The course was designed by Joel Goldstrand, so there were blind tee shots, blind approach shots, and forced carries on several of the holes. The stage is set by the first hole, a 504 yard (from the back tees) par 5 that requires an approach shot to carry over a creek separating the green from the fairway. Complicating the shot is a bunker guarding the front of the green that must also be carried if the pin is anywhere near the center of the green. The second hole is a par 3, 194 yards from the back tees, that also requires you to carry the same creek you saw on the first hole as it meanders through the course. You'll see the creek for the last time on hole eighteen, a 514 yard par 5 that will require you to carry the creek on the second shot, leaving a mid to short iron to the green. Leave the approach below the hole and you might finish your round with a par. If you like a links-style course with little tree coverage and a wide open feel to it, you will want to give this course a try.
Nice Course
This course, although somewhat in the middle of no where farmington, is always busy because of all the special's this course runs which is nice. However if you are unlucky and have to pay full price I think you may find more value elsewhere. The course is always in pretty nice shape with the greens also in good shape. Pace of play is pretty good here for how busy the course gets some times, which brings me to one of my only other complaints in that the course is tightly packed together. often times greens back right up to a tee box so you have to watch out sometimes for people with a lack of distance control or wild shots. Overall 4 out of 5 stars because it is a fun, straight forward, fairly open course.
ok
greens were punched and not sanded. pace of play was great, we got around in 2:45!!
Your dollar goes a long way
Southern Hills is one of the best courses I've played in its price range. Fairways are generally in great shape (except 16), and greens are about as true as you'll find in a public course. Course can challenge players of all skill levels; my only issue is that at only 6300 yards from the tips it's a bit too short for players who hit 250+ yards.
YUCK
Best feature of Southern Hills was EASY ACCESS to highway 3 to get me out of there!!
You should go back and play this course. They’ve made so many great improvements!
Decent Course
This course is just ok, holes are too tight. Some holes you basically share tee boxes and almost every hole is side by side with another hole. Course was in good condition and staff was friendly, but the way that the course is laid out, it's just not that great. I think it's a little over priced as well because you can go somewhere else a little better for the same price or maybe even a little cheaper than here. Plus don't bring a Discover Card, as they only accept Visa and Mastercard, which is a little ridiculous in this day in age.
Over priced and overrated
Slow greens. burn out rough. BUNKERS WERE NOT RAKED
You should go back and play this course. They’ve made some great improvements!
Fun layout. Tough front, easier back nine.
Hilly, fun layout with moderate difficulty unless your not hitting it straight that day then your in for a very tough day. The greens were the fastest I have played this year, which was suprising for late September. Overall, just a beautiful, fun course to play.
Close to Twin Cities & Good Course Layout
I hadn't played this course before last week, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed the course layout, and variations between holes. I would note that their fairways were a little longer than I prefer, but the greens rolled true and would suggest anyone get out here at least once, as its for sure worth it.
Good value
I played here years ago, and finally came back. course was in great shape. Got a really good rate, and it was worth it!
Love some of the views.
The course was in good late summer shape. All the greens rolled true with exception of #2. It was a little bumpy. I love the view to the west when on #12 (I think it''s 12). It over looks the entire golf course. The only thing I don't like about this course is that it's a Joel Goldstrand design. He loves the blind shot. All blind shots do is slow down play and create dangerous shots into the group in front of you.
Fun hole layouts
Course structure makes playing the fairway easy and fun
very nice
Everything about my experience here was great except for the grounds maintenance vehicles. I'm not sure if it was time of day/year or what, but it felt like the mower and and groomer were following me through the whole course. The operaters themselves were courteous. So I guess it was just a little distracting. Overall good experience though.
Great greens
One of my best online buys. Very cordial staff and super greens. I'll be back soon.
in good shape all in all greens need a little more work Pace of play not good they need a ranger on tne course

Great condition...fast greens
recommend, fast but true greens, fairways in great shape
Progress Is Slow
I've golfed here many times mainly because I live close by, and was actually a member for two years, (the third year they more than doubled the membership fee so I went elsewhere). There has been some improvements over the years but the sand traps are still pretty rough and seldom get any love. Last week one trap had water 3 feet deep, and this week it was 2 feet deep. There's ongoing drainage issues they haven't quite figured out and because of the wet weather this spring many of the greens are in the worst condition I've seen.
It's a shorter course (par 70), but still an interesting layout with elevation changes and can get really challenging when the wind blows. When conditions are good I am pretty fond of this track, but right now it barely rates a 3
They’ve remodeled the clubhouse and made some great improvements!
