Dogwood/Oak Tree at Middle Island Country Club
About
Middle Island Country Club sits almost at the center of Long Island and has been one of the area's most popular public golf courses since first opening in 1965. The 27-hole course is divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The entire layout was carefully carved from 225 acres of the Lustengarten Nursery. Middle Island's Dogwood/Oak combination features narrow fairways lined with trees. The greens on the front nine are the most challenging of any of the three nines. They have subtle breaks that leave many golfers wondering how they "just missed" it. The Oak nine is almost as tough, but you will get a slight break. It requires careful course management since there are many doglegs that can make it play longer than what's indicated on the scorecard.

A nice day
MICC is one of my favorite layouts that has experienced some rough times in the past. Currently the courses in OK condition. The fairways are good. The tee boxes are showing some ware but it is late July. So that can be forgiven. Since the last time I played there, there was a significant amount of sand added to the bunkers, making them very fluffy and full. There is crabgrass intruding into those bunkers, and there is crabgrass in a lot of the rough areas that should to be dealt with in order to raise this up to a truly top shelf experience also the greens need some attention as they were extraordinarily slow when greens get as slow as these were the normal breaks that you would see on them just aren’t there, all in all I would recommend playing here knowing that you’re going to have slow greens, but the pace of play was so good that I wouldn’t hesitate to go there early on a weekday that and the actual course layout is one of the best on LI. IMO.
Too Bad It's So Far
If I lived 15 minutes from this course, I would play here every day. I feel like I am playing on a private course when I tee off in the mid-afternoon. No one bothers me from behind or slows me down from ahead. The course is kept in great shape. I love the experience and the diversity between the upper courses (Oak and Dogwood)and the lower course (Spruce).
Slow and not in great shape
Greens are littered with ball marks, bunkers are poor and starter is miserable. For 93 a round the clientele does not show. Range is a mess. How do clubs get muddy off of mats. Constant slow play.
Great condition
The new owners and management have significantly improved the condition of this course.
Middle Island
Great spot place has improved. Need to improve communication from app when there is an outing.
Overall review
Greens were very sketchy, looks like the cups were never cut for a few days. Holes were overgrown with grass. Pace of play was good. Staff friendly, not much going on at the club
Too much wrong
I wanted to like this course. Liked the layout. Some good looking holes but just too much to not like. Rocks in bunkers . No sand , just dirt. Fairways are nice , but don’t miss them or you’ll be dealing with dirt, rocks, weeds etc… Greens looked good from a distance, till you got on them. Does anybody know how to repair a divot? Pockmarked doesn’t even begin to describe them. Slow as well. For $85 in the afternoon I would’ve done better playing a muni….UGH!!
Well Worth the Ride
I drive an hour to play here and it is worth every minute for a mid-afternoon tee-time. I feel like I have the course to myself and I finished in under three hours.
450 par four?
450 par four on the 10th hole - white tees- gold tees at about 440 - 95% of your golfers are not reaching in 2
Starter
The starter is absolutely the worst. Just a really unpleasant guy. Makes me not want to play at this course just because of him.
This course used to be absolutely amazing I don’t know what happened to it.
Definitely not where near how it used to be. To make things worse they definitely book 3 Tee times at the same time. Since it’s 27 holes. However you will be doing fine till you get to the next 9 with a different group in front of you just starting off.
This course should really switch off there 18 each day not offer 27 and have the courses replenish itself.
If anything maybe offer a 9.
