Last time I play a hot time in the afternoon
I'm a local, I've played this course many times over the last several years. Used a hot time instead of booking through the course. The course gets nothing from a hot time so they kind of treat you accordingly. After 2.5 hours on the front nine and people stacked on the 10th tee with no ranger encouraging people to speed up, I left. I've played a lot of golf and this is one of the first times I've quit mid-round due to slow, impossibly slow play. If I could give a negative star rating for pace of play, it'd be a negative 10. Since changing ownership, the staff is not what it used to be.
For any players looking to play Floodmoor---err Broadmoor---it's best to avoid Tuesday and Thursday rounds. They have a large group that plays each of these days and they affect the entire day.
Now, the course was in good condition. Fairways were a little wet prompting cart path only golf. Greens rolled true. Sand traps were wet and unplayable. All of this is based on the front 9 only.
Again, I'd play here again, but I would not play in the afternoon. Only early morning to avoid such a log jam. Course should control their tee times better as this would help curtail such a log jam on multiple tees.
Great course. Very disappointed that courses don't give discounts when it's cart path only. Otherwise, it plays great. I recommend this course to everyone. #12 is TOUGH.
Nice Layout
Good layout, due to rains the course was set, but not a great deal of standing water. Greens putted well. Staff was very friendly.
Not bad if you're in the area looking for a quick spot. The hitting area on the grass was pretty shaggy. Large planes fly pretty low to the ground (near Asheville airport). The greens rolled pretty well. Quirky hole layouts, but if you play the right angle you can score on the par 5s. The bunkers lacked sand and were unkept.
The thing that will not have me returning was simply the Cart Management system that would shut the cart down if you veered 20 feet off the cart path to retrieve a stray drive. We continued to get messages about the pace of play even though we were often waiting on the group ahead. These things are automated but should undergo some fine tuning. We didn't see a ranger/marshal the entire time we were on the course...
Bad attitude
Let me qualify this by saying I have probably played and practiced at Broadmoor more in the last 25 years than any golf course I have been around. I love the layout and the improvements they have made to the condition of the course have been great! I think they have over priced themselves a little but that may just be me. They have started not letting you go to the parking lot with a cart. To make sure they have blocked off the the parking lot and made a bag drop. I’m guessing this is because of some liability to there insurance which I understand. They don’t have a guy loading bags or assisting getting your bag in or out of your car which can be a problem for some folks. I brought this up to the starter and his comment was that he told people that the complainant department was inside the pro shop. I get he probably hears that a lot but that’s part of dealing with the public we aren’t always fun. The guy inside that day was just there. My feelings are that if your going to charge like a first class place you should act like it. A shame but there’s always another place to play.
Good course good condition
I was pleasantly surprised by the conditions of the course. The layout is interesting and challenging. Totally recommend this course.
Staff was not helpful
Dropped our bags at bag drop then parked car. Walked up and bags were still sitting there. Go inside hands me the keys that’s all. Go outside and have to sign and date cart check out. Then carts won’t pull down to golf drop rack because of there program won’t let them go anywhere near the parking lot. Cart guy laughs as my cart shut down as I tried to go get my bag Myself. That was just the start. Tee boxes haven’t been mowed in a month slow play added by the end where they want us to drop the carts of for easier cleaning for cart boys on the opposite side of the club house from where you exit with your bag. Hope they do better or this coarse will go under
Course and practice ranges were great
I enjoyed the driving and chipping ranges prior to starting my round. The course was busy so my group had to wait at most holes. I really liked the fact that the course had a cart girl to provide refreshments.
Great course for the money.
Course was in good shape and pace of play was under 4 hours. More water and trees than I was expecting.
The starter was correct
The starter explained that the course was fairly flat by Asheville standards- correct. He told me there was lots of water and that I would spend a lot of money on balls- both correct. Nice challenging layout. Nice carts with gps. Restaurant/bar was good.
Good value, unique venue, but not exactly what I expected
Broadmoor is a nice facility in a challenging location alongside a freeway and across the street from the Asheville regional airport, so the jets are landing right overhead which is either cool or annoying. Although they describe themselves as a "links course" it really isn't. The layout is quite flat with very few fairway undulations and bunkers, and with far more trees and water than what I would associate with a links style course. That said, the clubhouse is nice and they do a good job maintaining the course all things considered. It was a little wet when I visited and things were a bit mushy. With 5 sets of tees there are 600 yards difference from the tips (6900) to the next (blue) set of tees (6300) so it's either quite long or not long enough in my opinion. They allowed an unskilled 5-some two groups in front of us that slowed the pace considerably, but I was able to play through them on the back 9. I would characterize Broadmoor as a better-than-average muni facility with a nice clubhouse and practice area that's very busy, and expect to encounter players of all skill ranges on the course itself. Overall I found the course layout to be different than advertised, but a fairly pleasant experience and a good value for the price.
