June 18
Everything is in good shape. I usually give this place three stars based on greens and pace. Currently the greens are very nice and the pace was good for a Saturday.
Winter update 2018
Everything dormant
Greens in relatively good shape for winter
Pace was horrendous as they had a special and the first group off was a fivesome that took 5 hours. No marshal to be found.
Spring 2017
Greens have recent aeration conditions and are week(s) away from being normal.
Fairways are in good shape and mostly green coming out of dormancy.
Rough was short and consistent at 2' or less. (nice change from the overgrown conditions from all the rain at many other local tracks)
Tees are lush and mostly level.
Sand was fluffy and consistent.
Pace of play was slow (like always) at just over 5 hours.
They still have the sign on 17 that has yardages that do not match the laser or the gps, why? IDK
Good course can get packed
This course stays very well maintained. It can get very busy which can really slow your round down.
Old school course
This course is dated with trees everywhere. The greens were in bad shape from being errated weeks ago from what I hear. The best holes are 17 and 18. The rest are pretty straight forward. The bar and snack bar smell like an ash tray, the 60's called! They want their building back! We paid $30.00 for an online special and this was probably double what this course is worth. Since there are not a lot of course options here in Fresburg, we are a captive audience! One positive was the carts scooted along! I would have rated better if the price was in line with the course conditions.
Nice Course
It is a nice course. The greens have been plugged and not fully recovered, that is why I rated the course conditions as average. I know they have to maintain the greens, but it is hard to give an above average rating when you don't get a true roll with the ball. In a few weeks I think it will be a great course to play.
Conditions are turning green for spring
Spring is getting course back into shape
Pace was poor please please please stop booking every tee time right behind charity tournaments. Everyone knows that they take longer than expected and the result is gridlock.
Greens are very firm!
The greens are very firm right now.
Good course, rude members
The course was excellent, the hole placement was challenging. The pace was a little slow but not horrible for a Friday late morning tee time. However, behind us were a foursome of clear members. They had a radio in their cart that was blaring while the parked right next to the greens. They had very little golf ediqite, not using cart paths, blaring music while we were teeing off, and parking right behind tee boxes. I thought members would have more respect for their club.
Very nice course!!!
Was a great round. Was supposed to rain so we didn't have any play in front or behind us. And only got a sprinkle a couple of times. This is a very nice course with friendly staff and great food. I would recommend this course to anyone. It is by far one of the nicest public courses in fresno
Great location, easy walk
This course can sometimes be crowded because of the convenient location. Depends on what day you're playing. Tree lined course makes driving it straight a premium.
challenging hole locations
Course is challenging. Hole locations are par breakers. But rude players behind us, hitting up on us on par 4s before we were on green several times. Disappointing.
Front nine was closed for repairs
Considering the front nine was closed...pace of play wasn't horrible! Greens on back looked as if they were gonna need remidied soon!
Always crowded, yet always fun
Good variety of holes. Great location at the top of Van Ness down in the river basin. The combination makes it an enjoyable round.
This course receives a lot of play and the pace often suffers due to the volume of rounds and from overmatched golfers attempting the blue tees. The back tees have a handful of holes where the distances are greatly exaggerated.
The day we played the greens were a bit beat up due to what appeared to be tournament play. The course was also brown in areas from the drought, as most Cal curses are this year. Typically the conditions are above average.
There are changes happening on 17 and 18. The finished product should result in a more beautiful and challenging course. Currently there are issues.
-17- There is a new bunker that by my eye is 1/3+ of an acre (guesstimate, but it's huge). Aesthetically it is awesome. The bunker starts from the fence well left of the green then continues up to the left edge of the green and up on the hill behind the green and finally wraps around the right side. The problems are: 1) two, yes two, rakes for the entire gigantic beach worth of sand, really? 2) access to the next tee is obstructed and apparently walking back to the front of the green to go around is too difficult for people as I counted seven paths in the bunker that had been used to exit the green and were left un-raked. 3) currently the sand is powdery soft and having a plugged or fried egg shot from a downhill lie to a green sloping even more downhill is what faces those flying the ball to the back portion of the bunker.
-18- This once easy par five has been changed on the scorecard to a long par four. There is clearing of brush on the hill adjacent to the tee and possibly one or more tee boxes being built/finished. The problem is that the scorecard changed but the distances appeared to be the same. This may make the hole a challenging par four from the blues at 485, but impossible from the whites for most players at 470 with an over water approach.
Both 17 and 18 also had some sort of serious distance confusion occurring. The scorecard did not match the tee signs which did not match the laser/GPS. We went with the laser/GPS. This needs to be fixed.
This course is a few tweaks/upgrades/changes from getting four stars from me. There are two big things holding it back. The range is substandard with old mats, bad turf where there is turf and awkward/short setup and it really stands out as being out of place with how good the course is in comparison. The other thing is that for the price there needs to be a step up in conditioning of the course and the facilities in order to get the four stars the place so deserves.
everything about this course and the people is great, the only issue is it's a little pricey
good course, friendly staff, fun to play, but pricey.
