Everyday links experience awaits

Your experience at Crail (Balcomie Links) largely will depend on your expectation.

You will get the same stunning coastal views that you get just down the coastline at Kingsbarns, but not the conditioning. You will get the centuries-old history like you do a couple of miles back in town at the Old Course at St. Andrews, but not the experience.

If you want an everyday, meat-and-potatoes, townie links experience, Crail will be to order. I believe that courses like Crail, Brora and Western Gailes are the glue that holds Scottish links itineraries together. This is the essence of golf in Scotland. We decided to forego caddies, carried our own bags and were invited to play with a member and his son while on the putting green, which moved our tee time up half an hour.

This was the round - one of 13 total - that we experienced all four seasons over the course of a round. Started pleasant and warm. Rained four holes in causing a brief delay. Sun came out. Sweater came off. Turned cool again. Sweater back on. Little more rain. Hot again. Sweater off. Wind picked up and turned cool again. Sweater back on!

The course is quirky. Plays to a par of 69 and measures only 5,800 yards. There are three par 5s and six par 3s. The ever-present wind, however, renders the yardage on the scorecard meaningless. The theme of the course is simplicity and true minimalism. There isn’t much rough to speak of. Bunkers are low-slung in the flattish ground and
greens largely follow the cant of the surrounding slopes. Remember, this course was created in the days when course design was governed by the natural lie of the land and not mechanical earth movers.

There are Viking fortifications that run throughout the course. These stone walls provide a nice border to many holes.

Notably, the greens are a little slower than most courses we
played, due to the high winds and exposed sites found here.

Access can be had if you are want it bad enough

I cannot imagine anyone coming to GolfAdvisor and clicking on this page wondering if they should play the Old Course.

So I will not rehash the course. Instead, I will tell you about my experience and some things not to miss if you are lucky enough to play.

First of all, if you want to play this course badly enough, you most certainly can, with a bit of effort. I began planning our Scottish golf trip more than a year in advance. Our 2-ball struck out on the advance ballot. And we struck out twice in the 48-hour daily ballot. So we decided to line up at the pavilion the night before. We rented a flat a block and a half from the course and all of my research said that if you got in line by 3 or 3:30 am, you would likely get out. My son walked down at 11pm and there were two people in line. When we arrived at 3am, we were Nos. 22 and 23! I must say I was discouraged and considered leaving, since we had counted only 12 blanks on the ballot for the following day.

Still, we stuck it out. We had a great time talking with others in line. Everyone in that line is brimming with optimism and it is fun learning their stories. When the staff arrived at 6 am, a starter gathered us and said he had some good news: they had several four-balls cancel and he had 24 spots to offer. We were elated! We were even able to be paired together, making it that much more special. So if all other avenues fail, get in line the night before... early!

I recommend sitting on the bench just behind the first tee and putting green before you tee off. Soak all of it in.

Be prepared to feel every eye in a one-mile radius on you as you put your tee in the ground on the first tee. Just borrow plenty of fairway left and get it airborne.

Left, and I mean even way left, is fine on the Old Course. You can recover from even the next fairway over. But all of the trouble lies to the right.

Practice 50-yard putts. This will be the most useful tool in your arsenal.

Post-round watering holes are hotly debated. My thought is it is best immediately post-round to go to the patio of the Jigger Inn so you can watch other players do what you just did. Afterward move to the Dunvegan, which is unequivocally the best pub in town... and perhaps the world!

Walk the first and 18th holes, as well as over to the 17th green at twilight. It is a surreal experience. Especially before you play.

Links or no links?

While some may not claim Kingsbarns as a true links, it’s a weak argument. It is one of the finest additions to Scottish links in recent years.

Kingsbarns is home to dramatic sea views on every hole. Wide open fairways roll over undulating ridges and hollows into expansive greens. The seamless melding of flat farmland and Old World links contours hit the mark. The generous fairways and greens are further complicated by less areas of serious trouble compared to other links courses in the area. This creates ample opportunity to play with the same ball for the duration of the round, especially if you hire a caddie, or in our case, a forecaddie.

Kyle Phillips did an excellent job of taking advantage of the scenic property by designing holes along the cliff edges with expansive vistas across the sea, as well as interior holes with plenty of intrigue. I was told that he wanted this track to be playable no matter the conditions, which is why he designed the course to not be too penal with wayward shots.

There simply isn’t a bad hole on the property. Plenty of creativity and variety is incorporated into the design from the first hole to the last. Of particular note is the collection of par 3s. They are all great standalone holes, but I feel like they built in intensity to culminate at the 15th.

Along with Castle Stuart, Kingsbarns was the best conditioned course I played on my trip.

North Berwick is the perfect hybrid between big name Scottish “give you a complimentary bag tag on the first tee” course and everyday townie course.

Such an important round for the architectural value of this track. From hole 14 on it is one history lesson after the next.

I would strongly suggest hiring a caddie.

The staff does a great job the moment you park your car (at your own risk along the 18th fairway!). Lunch in the clubhouse overlooking the 18th green should not be missed. The pro shop is well-stocked with great merchandise.

Play a living museum

Musselburgh won’t make many Scottish itineraries. Yet, I wouldn’t have missed it, particularly since we flew into Edinburgh at 8 am and didn’t have anything to do or anywhere to be until North Berwick at 3:15pm.

Sure it is only nine holes, and the holes are fairly straightforward, but the wind was howling and it’s located mostly within a working horse racing track! I thought it was a fantastic introduction to the quirks of links golf - clubbing for wind, using the run ups to greens, bump-and-run chipping and putting in the wind - without paying this price on a more reputable and pricier track. One loop is 15 pounds!

Don’t get me wrong, the course is no joke. The first hole, a par 3 played 240 yards dead into a 25 mph wind. Had 3W into another par 3, the eighth. The green on hole 7 is really fun.

Pro shop attendant was more than happy to tell us about the history and show us old aerial photos of the course.

Roller-coaster ride in the desert

It doesn’t take long for one to figure out why this course is included in popular video games. The trek to the top of the second tee box spells it out for you.

Lush green fairways are laced between craggy rock formations. Greens are perched atop buttes and crammed into hollows. Tee boxes resemble crow’s nests in spots.

Wolf Creek is not for the faint of heart. Hit your marks or pay a heavy price. Driver is not necessary for better players on the majority of the holes. Playing to the 150-yard marker stones is a good way to mine pars.

The greens were quick, but not penal.

The bunkers were crusty and very thin. That is not due to poor maintenance - that is the way they are designed to play, so it was tough to save par from them.

I would highly encourage first-timers to plunk down $7 for a course yardage guide in the pro shop. It will save you a handful of strokes at a minimum.

The pro shop has a great selection of merchandise. The only negative I can find with the course was the limited driving range, which is irons only.

Back nine views

It is not necessarily a fair statement, but nonetheless it is true: players navigate Sand Hollow’s Championship course’s front nine as a means to merely get to the star of the show - the inward half.

The par-3 11th hole and the par-3 15th hole bookend a breathtaking stretch that can only be fully appreciated after playing it in the last light of the afternoon. A setting sun reflecting pink light off the canyon rock is something to behold. Nos. 11, 12 and 13 are as fine a three-hole stretch as I can recall. They are especially memorable because the are not next to a body of water.

The front nine holes aren’t bad, they just pale in comparison to the grandeur of the back nine. The par 5s are short and it is possible to stockpile a few birdies on the front in preparation for hanging on later in the round.

There is GPS on the cart to assist, but beware the ball flies a little further in this dry desert air.

The bunkers are deep and are designed to play as true hazards. Loose impediments abound.

The clubhouse is a modest, yet beautiful structure that is in the style of this region. Full range.

Watch out for the rabbits! They are everywhere.

Eagle Trace is good, dealing with escaping the TPC shadow

This is a course that I have longed to play for personal reasons. I attended my first PGA Tournament here in 1987, at the Honda Classic.

Eagle Trace has seen a lot of changes since then. The PGA Tour obviously moved on, as did the TPC branding, as the course left that stable last year when confronted with a costly irrigation mandate.

Still, this is a solid South Florida course. You are eased in with some fairly easy holes. Come the par-4 fourth hole, however, the intensity is turned up. This was my second favorite hole on the course because of the design. It is a cape hole that requires a roughly 200-yard carry from the tee to clear the large waste bunker that borders the canal. The landing area appears small, though, thanks to two bunkers that frame the fairway on the far side. Provided you find the fairway, the remaining shot requires no more than a wedge, but an extremely small green awaits. The club has filled in a bunker short and right and made it a grass bunker, but the target zone is claustrophobic.

The par-5 fifth is memorable for the risk/reward second shot to a green that is shallow, but nearly 50 yards wide.

The par 3s all require carries. The par 5s are gettable. But when the wind rears it’s head, this is a tough golf course to score on.

My favorite hole was the short par-4 16th hole, which looks benign from the tee, with a split level fairway that narrows the farther you choose to take it up. The second shot is to a peninsula green, with water long and right. Two pot bunkers guard the bailout left.

The par-4 18th plays longer than the yardage to a most unique ampitheater. The stadium seating mounding behind and to the left create a postcard approach to a green with the colonial-style clubhouse looming behind.

There is a lot of wildlife on the course. I encountered an owl in the bunker fronting the 18th green that had burrowed into the trap.

I didn’t find the conditioning to be that lacking. I think if you played the course under the TPC banner and play it now, it is not going to measure up for obvious reasons. The bunkers were a little tough around the edges and there was some creeping grass into the Bermuda greens that really affected putts, but overall the conditioning was fine.

My only complaint echoes what I had read on previous reviews: slow play is a REAL issue here. My tee time was 2:05 pm and they were running nearly 20 minutes behind. The round took nearly five hours. To the club’s credit, the scorecard prominently addresses slow play, and the cart’s GPS sent numerous reminders about avoiding slow play. Yet, the course could really benefit from an on-course marshal.

Practice area were great. Starter was great. Twilight rate is well-worth it.

Tip: Ask the pro shop attendant for a course guide/yardage book. They have some of these behind the counter with the old TPC branding. Also, if you have a range finder, shoot the pins and don’t rely solely on the cart GPS. I remember four holes where the GPS said the hole was cut one place, when it was actually on the opposite end of a green.

Azalea City playing firm and fast

Azalea City is a hardscrabble muni that is currently playing like a West Texas track, thanks to a drought.

This parkland course is somewhat narrow thanks to tree-lined fairways. However, the dry conditions that make 100-yard rollouts with driver off the tee, make the fairways seem narrower. Drives that seem perfectly placed can roll through the fairway.

Fairways are extremely thin.

The greens are small and many are pitched severely from back to front, making remaining below the hole on approach shots an absolute must. Greens rolling good.

Be aware if you are playing from or near the tree line... there are a lot of exposed tree roots and some just below the surface so be cognizant of playing from these areas to avoid injury.

Bunkers were pretty solid and consistent.

Yardage guide for sale in the clubhouse ($7) is worth it, especially for first-timers. You cannot see small ponds that come into play on both par 5s on the back on approach.

The driving range here is top notch with a flat tee and a wide berth. Good short game areas as well.

Extreme playability on the menu at BB

Course is in really good shape given how much rain we’ve had this winter.

With even more tree removal since I was here last, this track is nearly completely WIDE open. You can spray it left and right off the tee and still manage to score.

The greens were surprisingly firm, but they roll very true. Excellent greens. Traps had appropriate amount of sand and were very consistent.

The Windmill nine is undergoing some maintenence and they are also massaging a couple of holes, so I’m not sure when it will re-open.

If I had one constructive criticism, a $55 weekday rate is a bit on the high end for Birmingham public golf.

Worth a round just for the tee shot on No. 15

Had time for one round in the DFW area while in town for a meeting. Glad I settled on this place.

Stevens Park sits within the confines of a charming neighborhood in the suburbs of Dallas. The surrounding homes are really interesting. This is a municipal course that doesn’t act like one, all the way down to the signature Rolex starter’s clock near the putting green.

The architectural quality also belies its municipal moniker. The redesign is brilliant. The variety of holes is noteworthy: a tough opening hole is followed by a gem of a short par four. That is followed by a 90-degree dogleg with a severe uphill approach. There is a good mix of short par 3s and medium length ones as well.

Though Stevens Park measures merely just over 6,200 from the tips, the yardage is deceiving. There are six par 3s, which makes the total look shortish on the card. Never have I played a 6,200-yard course that is landlocked with such a strong collection of par 5s. The first one - No. 6 - plays shorter than 500 yards and provides plenty of width off the tee. It’s the second shot, however, that makes it such an interesting hole. You will likely have 200+ into the green for your approach. There is a small stand of trees that divides the fairway near the green. You can either play right of them, but have to carry the ball far enough past them to receive the reward of an open approach into the green. The natural route is to the left of the stand, but there one will find a valley and a large bunker that demands a deft touch to get near a front pin placement. Number 10 is a fantastic hole that offers options off the tee. Bunkers dominate the landing area and a creek fronts the green, making going for the green in two risky and layups demanding in search of the two-tiered green. Number 16 is seemingly reachable if your drive avoids the fairway bunker down the left. Second shots will need to carry an 80-100-yard chasm that sets up an uphill wedge approach to a bunker again fronted by a large, deep bunker. Players will be tempted to go for for the green in two, but holding this green with that much club seems to me to be nearly impossible.

I really liked the square greens on a majority of the holes. They were grainy and quick. Fairways were a little thin due to all the recent rain the area has experienced, as well as it’s just the transition from winter into spring.

Putting and chipping greens available, as are two warm-up nets to hit into, as there is no driving range. Check your yardages with a rangefinder if you have one, as several of the yardages the on-cart GPS provided were grossly inaccurate.

The staff was very accommodating. I came straight from the airport and the pro shop attendant gladly stored my bags and travel case for me while I played.

Precision is a premium at Mystic Creek

This is ranked #2 in Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play in Arkansas and it lived up to the billing.

Despite eight inches of rain the night before, the course was very playable. I moved up a tee box since drives were getting no roll out in fairways so I could get a good sense of where the approach shots were designed to be played from. Nevertheless, the course still played extremely long. There are six sets of tees: Black, blue, white, green, red and yellow. The black tees tip out at a daunting 7,529 yards. The blues are 7,147 yards. The whites are 6,723 and the greens measure 6,246 yards. So it’s a brawny golf course. After playing it though, I would suggest that in dry conditions the course plays shorter than the yardage because most holes play downhill. There is only one hole (17) that plays truly uphill. Picking the correct tees, however, will be integral to success here.

The greens are large, fast and contain many plateaus, and swales, which provide a lot of movement. Three-putts are in play for anything outside of 20 feet. The bunkering is very dramatic and can deceive your depth perception. Lots of sand in these fluffy bunkers. In fact, the greens and surroundings, particularly in the closing stretch, would make Ross and MacKenzie giggle with devilish delight. Take #17 for example. I have been fortunate to play all over the country and I cannot recall a more difficult green complex and surrounding area. Much like Pinehurst #2, the 17th, and many other greens are domed and push balls off into deep, closely-mown collection areas that are daunting to get up-and-down from. With today’s pin-placement front right on 17, anything left is repelled to an aforementioned collection area. Anything three yards right of flag is rejected to another collection area that is some eight feet below the green. A shot just short will spin back off the front some 40-50 yards down the hill. The prudent play is to the middle of the green beyond the pin. Still, you are left facing a slick downhill putt that could easily roll off the green. Stressful! This makes it a tough course for mid-to-high handicappers simply because there is little to no room for marginal shots.

You must drive it well off the tee to be in the correct position to play approach shots. If you are on the wrong side of some fairways, you will be blocked out by overhanging trees that pinch landing areas. Small creeks border many fairways, as well, making errant tee shots susceptible to red stakes.

There were several memorable holes that were notable. First, the second hole is a brilliant short par 4 that is home to a beautiful green fronted by a pond and surrounded on the other side by bunkers. The par-5 fifth is an excellent risk-reward hole, where even laying up makes short approaches no bargain with all the trouble lurking around the green. The par-3 12th looks almost exactly like another 12th hole in Augusta. The only downside is it plays from a different angle than its famous brethren.

My constructive criticism lies in the fact that there is no yardage guide available or GPS on the carts to help you navigate the course, particularly for first-timers. Troon is now managing the course, so this could perhaps change. I would advise you to print out course notes that can be found on the course’s website. It breaks down each hole and will help on a few holes with lines off the tee and preferred landing areas on greens.

Also, there is no clubhouse. In Sweetens Cove fashion, there is simply a portable trailer that serves as a pro shop, rest room, and office. There are light snacks available but I would plan on fueling up before you get there.

Have played several Hurdzan & Fry courses of late, so was curious to see this effort, having wanted to play here for years.

I found the two nines to be aesthetically very different. The front played through hardwoods with moderate elevation change. There is plenty of width off the tee, though it is evident that the now-dormant Bermuda rough can be quite hazardous to approach shots in spring and summer conditions.

The back nine plays out to a peninsula on Lake Martin, setting up panoramic views on many holes, particularly the par 3s. The water level was down, typical for this time of year, but it was easy to get a sense of how spectacular some of the shot values can be when the water level creeps ever closer to the green bulkheads.

One thing that Hurdzan & Fry did that I liked was the use of split fairways on holes 10 and 18. A deep pot bunker lies in the center of the approach to the green at 10, meaning the ideal route off the tee should be dictated by which half the pin is on. Visually, this hole seduces you from the tee box to take it down the left-side, to get a shorter club in your hand for the approach, but the water comes into play, making it a riskier proposition. There is no hazard to contend with on the par-5 18th, but likewise, p,aging the hole backward depending on where the pin is cut on the green should dictate which fairway to play to.

One thing I didn’t like about the design was the bunkering. The traps were very deep and I quibble with making the entry to fairway bunkers shallow and exit extremely deep. The works on links courses, but not here. I’m fine with deep bunkering around the greens.

Speaking of greens, they were exquisite. Rolled really fast and could be grainy at times. Putts rolled out and left a lot of four-and-five-footers for par.

The course plays longer than the advertised yardage. This could be a product of the damp conditions from recent rains, but at 6,500 yards and playing better than normal from the tee with driver, I consistently found myself with 170-75 yard approach yardages throughout the day. Would’ve like to have had a bit more variety club-wise for those shots, but that is being nit-picky.

Ridge being renovated

The Ridge course is undergoing a minor facelift, resulting in a few cosmetic upgrades.

There is a ton of sod being layed throughout the course, mostly around greens and bunkers.

As for the bunkers, many are being overhauled through the course, rendering many GUR.

There are some cart path repairs as well, which were due.

The greens were still recovering from recent aeration, but weren’t bad - just slower than you would expect for these fall temps and bentgrass this time of year.

There is also some extensive tree removal being undertaken.

I would give this course a month and it should be back to somewhat normal playing conditions. Valley course may be a better option in the short term.

Worth the drive from Pittsburgh

I am quickly becoming a big fan of Hurdzan and Fry’s work because of layouts like Olde Stonewall, roughly 30 minutes northwest of Pittsburgh.

They made great use of the land they were given. The front nine rises from the banks of the Connoquenessing Creek and is relatively flat, compared to the inward half, which rises up over wooded hills to a breathtaking ridge.

Autumn golf in this part of the country was better than expected. Though there was a brief frost delay before temps crept into the lower 40s, it never felt that cold. Course conditions were also exceptional, allowing for carts off path on most of the holes.

After easing in with an opening par 5, the course really takes shape. The holes around the small lake, hard against the creek, are very memorable. Thousands of huge grey stones shape the course, giving it a unique feel.

Holes 11-18 are a roller coaster ride. Nos. 12-16 are as visually stimulating as they are challenging, and provide a stellar finish to the round.

The back-to-back par 3s at 14 and 15 are unique and play quite differently, though both require longer shots than it appears. Has anyone else seen the fake rhino in the reeds in front of the 14th green? Stumbled upon it searching for my ball and startled me before I realized what it was!

The maintenance crew does an outstanding job not only with keeping the general aesthetics of the course in great condition, but also do a notable job of clearing the falling leaves. Never once lost a ball in the fallen leaves. I could not say the same about the course I played the day before. Great job!

Though I may be in the minority, I wasn’t crazy about the clubhouse. It is in the style of a medieval castle, and I’m sure it was in keeping with the club’s name, but I felt it a bit out of place. I don’t think a course of this caliber needs a hokey clubhouse. Pro shop was tremendous though, with much more to offer than standard ones.

The staff was very attentive and helpful at every turn. GPS on the carts were accurate.

Lofty ranking falls a little short

Good layout with a handful of really memorable holes, but I was a little underwhelmed by The Virtues, considering its ranking in both of the top two golf magazine’s Top 100 public courses list.

To be fair, this is the end of the golf season in eastern Ohio, so conditions weren’t going to be top notch. Additionally, the course took on considerable rain the day before. The fairways, despite being damp, were just fine. The greens, however, were very slow for Bentgrass. The biggest detriment was the dire condition of many greens due to unrepaired and poorly repaired pitch marks. Perhaps this isn’t paid as much attention to by the maintenance staff since it is the end of the season. I would be curious if this is a problem in peak season.

As I stated, there were some really memorable holes. The opening par four is unusual. The 90-degree dogleg tempts cutting the corner. But playing at the large tree in the center of the fairway with less than driver leaves 125 yards.

The short par-4 sixth was another standout for me with an excellent risk/reward proposition.

The eighth would appear to me to be the course’s signature hole, though I can’t say that with certainty. Arthur Hills did a great job designing it, providing three options off the tee: one can play out to the right side and take advantage of the Redan-like fairway to feed the ball down the slope. Or one can challenge the corner of the dogleg and set up a wedge approach. Failure to clear it will leave the player in a large grass swale and perhaps dealing with tree trouble to pin placements on the left side of the green. Thirdly, one can play to the small landing area left of the cluster of trees and set up a short second shot. This route requires an approach completely over water though. This hole was well thought out and extremely fun to play.

The back nine played into the valley, so it was flatter than the undulating front half. The eleventh is a good hole that can offer a semi-blind approach if your tee shot is to the left half of the fairway. There is more room left of the green than appears though if you need to bail out.

Course played long in 10-15 mph wind and low 50s temps. Might want to move up a tee box.

I would like to see the staff keep the leaves picked up. Lost several balls in the leaves that should have been found.

The shoulder season rate is a good value and I definitely think it is worth a spin.

Still the best

OOC is still my hands-down favorite course in Birmingham. Course conditions are immaculate this time of year and it is an absolute pleasure to be able to get a round here at this private track.

The collection of par 3s stand out, and the back nine, particularly the final four holes are as good as it gets.

Twilight rate at Ballantrae provides awesome value

Ballantrae’s greens are the best I’ve ever seen them. They are firm and roll beautifully (pay attention to grain) yet hold well-struck approaches.

Course drained well despite a good bit of rain the night before and off and on rain during the round. Never encountered standing water.

Liked the pink flags in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. Nice touch.

$40 afternoon rate w/ cart is one of the best values in Birmingham right now. Brilliant move by management in a highly-crowded and competitive public golf market.

Excellent option to build around Trail trip

Timberline is in excellent shape and is a solid option to fill in any gaps on an RTJ Trail pilgrimage, especially when moving south from Birmingham to Prattville or Opelika.

Timberline is still one of the higher end public options in metro Birmingham, but the layout and conditioning warrants it.

Greens were quick and grain heavily influenced putts. Sand in the bunkers were good.

Excellent practice areas, with plenty of room.

Course was not crowded early on a Monday morning.
